Benign cutaneous vascular and cutaneous neoplasms arising from muscle or adipose tissue are rare. Their definition and classification are still controversially discussed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, together with the new genetic tests, contribute significantly to the correct description of the various benign neoplasms of cutaneous origin. Clarifying whether a lesion is benign is fundamental for prognosis and therapeutic management. In most cases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Dermatologists should be familiar with the classifications of the most common be

Background Soft tissue neoplasm is a broad term referring to tumors that can arise from various tissues, including muscle, tendons, fat, nerves, and lymphatic and blood vessels. These neoplasms may be either benign or malignant, with classification based on the tissue of origin and tumor behavior. The aim of this study was to assess the relative frequency of soft tissue neoplasms among all neoplasms, determine the incidence of benign and malignant soft tissue tumors (STTs), and examine variations in age, sex, anatomical location, and histological subtypes. Methods This descriptive study was co

Schwannomas are common peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Cavernous hemangiomas are vascular tumors that can affect any organ system. The coexistence of cavernous hemangioma with peripheral nervous system neoplasms is a rare occurrence. So far, 37 cases have been documented, and they have been divided into two categories: conjoined association (neoplasms discovered within the tumor tissue) and discrete association (neoplasms discovered outside the tumor tissue, thus placing neoplasms and tumors in close proximity but in different locations). Schwannomas and neurofibromas are the most prevalent tu

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) represent an uncommon benign fibrohistiocytic vascular lesion that sometimes may go undiagnosed because of its clinical and histopathological similarities with benign fibrous histiocytoma and other soft-tissue neoplasms especially when localized on oral cavity or semi mucosa. We report the case of a solitary multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma on the lower lip of a 46-year-old woman suggesting that this rare lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the oral soft-tissue neoplasms.

Vascular leiomyomas are infrequent benign soft tissue neoplasms arising from vascular wall. These lesions are more frequent in females, predominantly seen in lower extremities presenting as slowly enlarging freely mobile palpable soft tissue lesions, often painful. The role of imaging in small peripheral soft tissue masses is often limited to preoperative mapping with a long list of potential differentials. We are presenting 2 case studies of palpable masses with similar pathology, soft tissue vascular leiomyomas where its MR features can be helpful in inclusion of this entity not only in diff

The transcription factor LMO2 is involved in vascular and hematopoietic development and hematolymphoid neoplasia. We have demonstrated that LMO2 is expressed nearly ubiquitously in native and neoplastic vasculature, including lymphatics. LMO2 reactivity is otherwise virtually absent in nonhematolymphoid tissues except in breast myoepithelium, prostatic basal cells, and secretory phase endometrial glands. Vasculature is LMO2- in adult and fetal heart, brain of older adults, hepatic sinusoids, and hepatocellular carcinoma. LMO2 is uniformly expressed in benign vascular and lymphatic neoplasms an

Recently, a distinct subgroup of vascular neoplasms has been identified, characterized by NFATC-related fusions. Although existing literature is limited, these lesions histologically show a variable appearance with a tendency for local recurrence but not distant spread. Therefore, they likely fall within the "benign" or at most in the "local aggressive"/"borderline" tumor category according to the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) classification scheme. Up to now, vascular tumors with NFATC-related fusions have only been documented in bone and occasionally soft

Despite increased use of and reliance on cross-sectional imaging techniques in the thorax, conventional chest radiography remains the most commonly performed imaging examination. However, conventional radiographic appearances of normal and abnormal vascular structures can be misinterpreted as representing neoplasms or soft-tissue masses and lead to inappropriate diagnostic procedures. Vascular structures that can simulate neoplasms include normal structures such as the subclavian artery and left brachiocephalic, azygos, and pulmonary veins and abnormal structures such as congenital and acquire

We report a case of polymorphous hemangioendothelioma, a rare vascular neoplasm, arising in the liver of a 51-year-old woman. Microscopically, this neoplasm is characterized by a polymorphous blend of solid, primitive vascular and angiomatous areas in variable proportions. Polymorphous hemangioendothelioma is considered to be an intermediate-grade vascular neoplasm. In most of the reported cases, its occurrence has been in lymph nodes, but a few cases have been found in extranodal sites such as the mediastinum, spinal cord, and liver. Its classification among other soft tissue neoplasms is sti

Vascular tumors are benign neoplasms, which result from proliferating endothelial cells. These lesions present during infancy or childhood, may affect any location, and exhibit postnatal growth. Local complications include bleeding, tissue destruction, and pain whereas systemic sequelae include thrombocytopenia, congestive heart failure, and death. Vascular tumors should be differentiated from vascular malformations, which present at birth, have a quiescent endothelium, and grow in proportion to the child. Together, vascular tumors and malformations comprise the field of vascular anomalies.

Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (MEH), also known as high-risk epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, is a low- to intermediate-grade vascular malignancy originally described as a vascular neoplasm of endothelial origin. This very rare vascular neoplasm has been described mainly in soft tissue, but also in various organs and locations, including the liver, lung, brain, colon, lymph nodes, peritoneum, spleen, bone, skin, heart, soft tissues, and vascular system. Several cases have been described in the head and neck, including the submandibular gland, parotid gland, nasal cavity, paraphar

A case of simultaneous development of multiple vascular neoplasms in a patient with a previous history of burns and lymphoblastic lymphoma is reported. Microscopic examination revealed angiomatosis made up of diffuse capillary proliferation. We speculate that endogenous factors could have played an important role in the development of these neoplasms. We discuss the clinical and histological differential diagnosis of the case presented: a disseminated variant of lobular capillary haemangioma, Kaposi's sarcoma, bacillary angiomatosis and hyperplastic granulation tissue.

The microvasculature of normal acoustic nerve tissue and small intracanalicular and large extracanalicular neurilemmomas was analyzed by electron microscopy. The capillaries of normal acoustic nerve were nonfenestrated, but the microvasculature in nerve-sheath neoplasms was fenestrated. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia of endothelial cells were observed only in the small lesions. The proliferated and enlarge endothelial cells often partially occluded the vascular lumen and formed multichannel vascular lumina. Many fenestrae of capillaries were found in small neoplasms, but these were rarely identif

Ten spindle cell thymomas with prominent angiomatoid features are presented. The patients, consisting of 8 men and 2 women, are between the ages of 47 and 62, with an average age of 54.5. Clinically, 8 patients experienced chest pain, cough, and dyspnea, while 2 patients were asymptomatic. Diagnostic imaging revealed an anterior mediastinal mass in all patients, leading to surgical resection. The resected neoplasms varied in size from 3 to 5 cm in diameter and were described as well-circumscribed, hemorrhagic, with solid areas. Histologically, they exhibited extensive areas of hemorrhage with

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a benign mesenchymal tumor of young children. It has a broad clinical differential diagnosis and is often clinically confused for vascular and malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Recognition of the unique histologic features of FHI, a triphasic population of mature adipose tissue, mature fibrous tissue, and immature mesenchymal tissue, will ensure the correct diagnosis. In this report we present a case of this rare entity, including the associated clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings.

A total of 2530 consecutive bone scans were examined to evaluate the number and the type of soft tissue neoplasms detected with bone-seeking phosphonates. Sixty-eight primary or secondary soft tissue neoplasms of 63 patients accumulated 99mTc -methylene diphosphonate and 2 accumulated 99mTc -diphosphonate, and one metastasis was seen as a nonactive 'cold' focus in the urinary bladder. The localization of tumors was: 19 in the lung, 15 in the liver, 11 in the kidney, 10 in the peritoneal cavity or ascites, 5 in the large bowel, 4 in the vascular or lymphatic system, 3 in the connective tissue o

Knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the retroperitoneum is crucial for surgery of the retroperitoneal organs. Surgery is essential for treatment of retroperitoneal pathologies. The list of these diseases is extensive and comprises acute and chronic inflammatory processes (abscess, injury, hematoma, idiopathic fibrosis), metastatic neoplasms, and primary neoplasms from fibroadipose tissue, connective tissue, smooth and striated muscle, vascular tissue, somatic and sympathetic nervous tissue, extraadrenal chromaffin tissue, and lymphatic tissue. The retroperitoneum can be approached and explore

Vascular hamartoma is an abnormal development of endothelial tissue that rarely affects horses. Histopathological examination remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis, yet the presence of abnormal vascular structures must be carefully differentiated from other vascular anomalies and neoplasms. This report describes two cases of vascular proliferation affecting the skin on the lateral side over the left tarsus and the dorsolateral region over the fetlock joint of two fillies. The clinical history, presentation, and radiographic and sonographic findings in both patients suggested a neo

Molecular diagnostics, with the subsequent development of novel immunohistochemical markers, continues to advance and expand the field of soft tissue pathology. As such, the ever-evolving molecular diagnostic landscape will continue to shape and refine our understanding and classification of neoplasms. This article reviews the current literature on various tumors of mesenchymal origin, including fibroblastic/fibrohistiocytic, adipocytic, vascular, and tumors of uncertain origin. We aim to give the reader a detailed understanding and pragmatic approach to various new and established immunohisto

Following a case report in which acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) presenting as a soft tissue mass was misdiagnosed as composite hemangioendothelioma due to ERG and CD31 co-expression, we investigated whether this vascular marker co-expression is an isolated phenomenon or a reproducible feature of AMKL and other myeloid neoplasms, with particular relevance to distinguishing extramedullary myeloid neoplasms from vascular tumors. We studied 11 AMKL, 17 myeloid sarcoma (MS), 10 acute myeloid leukemia (AML), 40 chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (10 each of essential thrombocythemia, chron
