Neoprene is a synthetic rubber with many common uses, including use in shoe insoles and adhesives, orthopedic braces, and gloves. Many cases of type IV hypersensitivity from neoprene contact have been reported. Thioureas, the most commonly used vulcanization accelerators in the manufacture of neoprene, are responsible for the majority of these cases. However, thioureas are not included in the TRUE Test whereas the North American Contact Dermatitis Group standard tray contains only mixed dialkyl thioureas. Since most data indicate that many cases will be missed when only mixed dialkyl thioureas

Occupational therapists are expanding their use of custom and commercial soft splints fabricated from neoprene (polychloroprene), but little has been written regarding dermatological issues associated with this material. Skin contact with neoprene poses two dermatological risks: allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and miliaria rubra (i.e., prickly heat). Allergic reaction to neoprene is generally ascribed to the accelerants used to manufacture the man-made rubber, specifically thiourea compounds and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Symptoms of neoprene-related ACD include itching, skin eruptions, sw

PURPOSE: Scar formation is one of the most functionally and cosmetically debilitating results of thermal injuries. Burn team members continuously search for new, cost effective, ways to prevent and treat hypertrophic scar formation. This study is a retrospective review of one facility's use of neoprene based products as an adjunct to, or in place of, traditional scar management techniques.
METHODS: Records of all patients treated with neoprene patches or neoprene splints from March 2008 through April 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Vancouver Scar Scores (VSS) were collected, photographs w

Four neoprene compositions--uncured gum, known cured rubber, cable insulation, and hose conduit, the latter two used in underground mining--were subjected to thermal oxidative degradation under static and dynamic environments, and the volatile products were quantitated on a milligrams-per-gram basis. In a quiescent system at 370 degrees C, no glow was observed, the extent of oxidation was low, up to 84% of the chlorine content was evolved as hydrogen chloride, and the sulfur present was released largely in the form of carbon disulfide. Under more drastic conditions (higher temperatures and flo

Diethylthiourea, like other thioureas, is often used by the rubber industry and in the manufacture of neoprene. We present a patient who suffered allergic contact dermatitis to diethylthiourea in a neoprene wader and who required admission to hospital and systemic treatment. We review the literature on allergy to diethylthiourea. Thioureas are not included in the standard GEIDAC (Spanish Contact Dermatitis Research Group) battery of patch tests. In these cases, it is necessary to use a special battery of rubber allergens, which includes thiourea compounds, for diagnosis of the disease and to e

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a well-recognized immune-mediated disease often associated with the use of vulcanization accelerator-containing latex and nitrile gloves. Potential contact allergens in neoprene (polychloroisoprene, polychloroprene) gloves have not been reported.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to analyze extracts of neoprene surgical and examination gloves for potential contact allergens.
METHODS: Four different brands of neoprene-type gloves were purchased, and dichloromethane extracts were derivatized and assayed by gas chromatographic mass spectrometry. A lat

Thioureas, often contained within neoprene to provide water resistance, are an important cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in those who use neoprene products. We wish to present three cases of thiourea-induced ACD from three different orthopaedic supports containing neoprene. The first case was a 67-year-old woman who developed an itchy rash on her heel three weeks after using a neoprene insole for plantar fasciitis. The second case was a 47-year-old man who developed an itchy rash on his wrist after wearing neoprene wrist splints for psoriatic arthropathy. The third case was a 77-yea

Compression stockings are used for patients under general anesthesia to prevent occurrence of deep venous thrombosis. We report a case of allergic contact dermatitis to synthetic rubber, neoprene in compression stockings. A 53-year-old house wife had a history of sensitivity like skin eruption and disstasis to rubber products such as rubber band. Left nephrectomy for rupture of renal angiomyolipoma was scheduled under general and epidural anesthesia. Further examination for gum allergy was not performed before the operation, although latex allergy was suspected. The operation was performed une

Thermoplastic wrist orthoses have been used for some time for serial correction before surgery for radial dysplasia to realign the hand on the forearm bone. However, problems have been experienced with pressure areas, especially at the distal and proximal radial edges. Inserting padding with such a small orthosis (if made for a baby) distorts the fit. A neoprene brace has been developed that can be applied to an infant as young as 3 weeks old. Thermoplastic ulnar and radial reinforcers are used to maintain the correction. The method of construction and positioning are described. The reinforcer

Neoprene wetsuits experience significant thermal resistance degradation under hydro-static pressure, compromising diver safety and thermal comfort. Despite this known limitation, quantitative predictive models correlating material properties with thermal performance under diving conditions remain underdeveloped. This study quantified thermal resistance changes in commercial neoprene under simulated diving pressure (50, 100, 150, and 200 kPa, equivalent up to a 20 m depth) and developed predictive models for thermal performance degradation. A total of 33 commercially available neoprene sheets r

We describe 22 clinical cases of segmental pancreatic grafts that were prepared with neoprene injection in the pancreatic duct. Complete correction of the diabetes is obtained during the period of function of the graft. The surgical procedure is a safe one and does not lead to a higher surgical risk than the usual kidney transplantation. Progress should be made by early detection and effective treatment of the pancreatic graft rejection. Corticoids should be avoided to suppress the diabetogenic effect. Cyclosporine A will probably be the immunosuppressive of choice.

We performed 39 neoprene-injected pancreatic transplants (38 segmental and 1 total) in 37 insulin-dependent diabetic recipients from October 1976 to May 1983. The best results were obtained when the pancreas was transplanted simultaneously with the kidney (25 cases). The use of Cyclosporin A (CyA) for immunosuppression did not reduce the early pancreatic failures, but it seems to have slightly improved the long-term survival. The glycaemic control was better in patients treated by CyA alone than in those receiving steroids. The main side effects of CyA were nephrotoxicity and some immunoglobul

Flexion contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) is one of the most frequent complications in finger trauma. Orthoses are the most widely used method to optimize total end-range time (TERT). No previous studies showed that an elastic tension orthosis could be applied for longer than 12 h. We aimed to demonstrate that the elastic-tension digital neoprene orthosis (ETDNO) can achieve higher TERT and therefore better range of motion than other elastic-tension orthoses (ETO) described in the literature. A prospective study of treatment of PIPJ flexion contracture included 10 PIP jo

Specimens of similar nominal thickness from commercially available nitrile and neoprene gloves were each tested for breakthrough time against three chemicals. The null hypothesis was that the breakthrough times for the glove specimens of the same generic type but produced by different manufacturers would be the same. Breakthrough time data for each material/chemical combination were analyzed using an analysis of covariance to adjust for differences in the measured specimen thickness while testing for product differences. A significant difference in chemical breakthrough times was found among g

BACKGROUND: Diethylthiourea is widely used in the rubber industry, particularly in neoprene rubber, and may cause allergic contact dermatitis. However, as thiourea allergens are not part of the European baseline series, the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis caused by thiourea compounds depends on clinical suspicion and aimed testing.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to evaluate the occurrence of sensitization to diethylthiourea during a 19-year period by using data from the Allergen Bank database at the Department of Dermatology and Allergy Centre, Odense University Hospital, an

INTRODUCTION: Neoprene wetsuits may impose mechanical constraints on the chest wall, potentially altering respiratory function. This study investigated the impact of neoprene wetsuits on lung volumes, airway mechanics, and work of breathing (WOB) in healthy male divers.
METHODS: A randomised crossover trial was conducted with 31 male divers at the Royal Netherlands Navy Diving Medical Centre. Participants underwent pulmonary function testing, including spirometry, body plethysmography, the forced oscillation technique (FOT), and diffusion capacity measurements, both with and without a hoodles
