Morphology of the pterothoracic musculature in Paraneoptera and its phylogenetic implication (Insecta: Neoptera).

Although the monophyly of Paraneoptera (=hemipteroid orders or Acercaria, composed of Psocodea, Thysanoptera and Hemiptera) has been widely accepted morphologically, the results from molecular phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses contradict this hypothesis. In particular, phylogenomic analyses provide strong bootstrap support for the sister group relationship between Psocodea and Holometabola, that is, paraphyly of Paraneoptera. Here, we examined the pterothoracic musculature of Paraneoptera, as well as a wide range of other neopterous insect orders, and analysed its phylogenetic implication

Phylogenomics confirms Palaeoptera monophyly and illuminates the origin of winged insects.

The origin and early radiation of winged insects (Pterygota) represent one of the most transformative events in terrestrial evolution, yet phylogenetic relationships among their basalmost lineages (Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Neoptera) continue to be a central debate within insect systematics. Here, we present the most taxonomically comprehensive phylogenomic analysis to date, leveraging genomic and transcriptomic data from 101 species, including 16 sequenced ephemeropteran genomes. Employing 1,367 universal single-copy orthologs across two supermatrices, we used concatenation- and coalescent-b

A Standardized Protocol for Rearing Carausius morosus (Phasmatodea, Insecta) in Laboratory Settings.

Carausius morosus, the Indian stick insect, is a slender twig-like insect endemic to India. Though widely introduced through captivity around the world and commonly used in laboratories or kept as a household pet, standardized animal husbandry laboratory protocols are lacking. Here we report detailed laboratory culture conditions for C. morosus. We maintain stocks at 23 °C, 70% relative humidity, and a 12:12 h light-dark photoperiod. This culture has been successfully sustained under these conditions for over two years, with standardized protocols in place for dietary and cage setup conditions

The thorax of E ubleptus illuminates evolutionary history of winged insects.

The hexapod thorax represents a specialized tagma for body locomotion, and its formation was one of the crucial steps in arthropod evolutionary history. In insects, the thoracic morphology was crucial for the acquisition of wings, which was closely connected with the reinforcement of the lateral thoracic wall (pleuron). Here, we uncover the structure of the pleuron for the first time in a Carboniferous palaeodictyopteran, Eubleptus danielsi from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte (Illinois, USA). We reconstructed a 3D model of E. danielsi and compared flight-related traits with a broad range of extan

A gynandromorph of the stonefly Amphinemura zonata (Okamoto, 1922) (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) from Japan.

A gynandromorph of Amphinemura zonata (Okamoto, 1922) collected from Matsubara-izumi Pond in Japan is described and illustrated as the first report in the genus. The specimen exhibits bilateral gynandromorphism on abdominal sterna 79 and the paraprocts. Male features occur on the right half and female features on the left half. In addition, the gynandromorph is predominantly female as it retains female features on the dorsal male half of the abdomen, has eggs in the abdomen, has female-length fore wings, and lacks main male features such as an epiproct and a hypoproct on sternum 9.

The tracheal system in the stick insect prothorax and prothoracic legs: Homologies to Orthoptera and relations to mechanosensory functions.

Arthropod respiration depends on the tracheal system running from spiracles at the body surface through the body and appendages. Here, three species of stick insects (Carausius morosus, Ramulus artemis, Sipyloidea sipylus) are investigated for the tracheae in the prothorax and foreleg. The origin of the tracheae from the mesothoracic spiracle that enter the foreleg is identified: five tracheae originate from the mesothoracic spiracle, of which two enter the foreleg (supraventral trachea, trachea pedalis anterior). These two tracheae run separately through the leg to the femur-tibia joint where

Loss of a larval generic character: an interesting and new description for Isoperla vevcianensis Ikonomov, 1980 (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) with updated adult characters.

The larva of the Balkan microendemic Isoperla vevcianensis Ikonomov, 1980 (Plecoptera: Perlodidae: Isoperlinae) is described on the basis of larvae associated with adults by means of cox1 sequences similarities. Eggs and everted penis of the male are described for the first time. The larva possessed blunt paraprocts which were previously sharp among Palaearctic larvae of this huge Holarctic and Oriental genus. The commonly pointed paraproct remains as the only distinguishing generic character for the morphologically diverse larvae of Palaearctic Isoperla, but should not be considered as an exc

The biomechanical dilemma of phasmid eggs - how do stick insects hatch?

During their development, phasmid eggs with their long developmental periods face numerous biotic and abiotic challenges. These insect eggs are unique for their thick egg capsule and a specialised escape structure called the operculum/lid. This operculum needs to be easy to open from the inside, yet must not be a 'weak spot' for potential predators. One possible solution to this biomechanical dilemma could be a change in the operculum's mechanical properties over time. To investigate this hypothesis, we analysed the effect of age and storage conditions on the biomechanical properties of the eg

Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae): Life History, Predatory Potential, and Rearing Method of Earwigs.

The earwig Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) is recognized as the most frequently encountered predatory insect species in maize agroecosystems across maize-producing regions of Brazil and other South American countries. For over three decades, the earwig has been extensively investigated through both field surveys and controlled laboratory studies aiming at biological control of insect pests. Although augmentative biological control strategies involving the release of D. luteipes have been proposed, the currently available data on its predatory behavior and efficiency remain s

Phylogenomics and host-switching patterns of Philopteridae (Psocodea: Phthiraptera) feather lice.

Philopteridae feather lice are a group of ectoparasitic insects which have intimate relationships with their avian hosts. Feather lice include an enormous number of described species; however, the relationships of major lineages have been clouded by homoplasious characters due to convergent evolution. In this study, a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of the group is performed which includes 137 feather louse species. Several other analyses are also completed including dating analysis, cophylogenetic reconstructions, and ancestral character estimation to understand the evolution of complex m

Foccα6, a truncated nAChR subunit, positively correlates with spinosad resistance in the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande).

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), a molecular target for spinosyns and neonicotinoids, mediate rapid cholinergic transmission in insect central nervous system by binding acetylcholine. Previous studies have shown that mutations in nAChRs contribute to the high level of resistance to these two classes of insecticides. In this study, we identified nine nAChR subunits from a transcriptome of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, including α1-7, β1, and β2. Exon 4 of α4 and exons 3 and 8 of α6 each have two splicing variants, respectively. In addition, altered or incorre

Anatolia's Hidden Orthopteran Lineage: Discovery of Salmanihippus gen. nov. via Integrative Taxonomy.

Three populations of a new genus and populations of five Anatolian species of Gomphocerus are examined morphologically using morphometric analysis (Canonical Discriminant Function Analysis, CDF). The phylogenetic relationship between the new genus and the morphologically similar genera of Gomphocerus, Gomphocerippus, and Aeropedellus are assessed using the mitochondrial COI and Cyt-b gene sequences. Additionally, the bioacoustics of the three populations of the new genus are compared with previous bioacoustic descriptions of the related Gomphocerinae genera. The morphometric data based on the

Are males just passive? Coupling mechanism of the Brazilian cave insects with inverted genitalia.

Species of the Brazilian cave barklouse genus Neotrogla (Psocodea: "Psocoptera": Trogiomorpha: Prionoglarididae: Sensitibillini) are known to have a "female penis (gynosome)" that functions as an intromittent organ inserted into the membranous pouches in the simple male genital chamber during copulation to receive semen. However, the functions of other male and female genital structures and the copulatory processes of Neotrogla were completely unknown to date. Based on µCT observation of the male and female postabdomen and connected muscles both before and in copula, we clarified the functions

Subcortical life, evolution of flattened body, and constrained mating posture in the earwig Platylabia major (Insecta: Dermaptera: "Anisolabididae").

Many animals take advantage of the shaded, humid, and protected environments in subcortical spaces, i.e., thin spaces under the loosened bark of dead trees. Permanent inhabitants of subcortical spaces often show specialized morphologies, such as a miniaturized or dorsoventrally flattened body. However, the evolutionary consequences of these specialized morphologies on behavioral, ecological, and life-history traits have been little studied. We studied the mating biology and anatomy of Platylabia major (usually placed in the family Anisolabididae), which is an obligate inhabitant of subcortical

Integrating phylogenomic and population genomic patterns in avian lice provides a more complete picture of parasite evolution.

Parasite diversity accounts for most of the biodiversity on earth, and is shaped by many processes (e.g., cospeciation, host switching). To identify the effects of the processes that shape parasite diversity, it is ideal to incorporate both deep (phylogenetic) and shallow (population) perspectives. To this end, we developed a novel workflow to obtain phylogenetic and population genetic data from whole genome sequences of body lice parasitizing New World ground-doves. Phylogenies from these data showed consistent, highly resolved species-level relationships for the lice. By comparing the louse

Cymothales manselli sp. nov.: an unexpected new antlion species widely distributed in the Afrotropics (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae: Dendroleontinae).

The identity of the widely distributed Afrotropical antlion species Cymothales bouvieri van der Weele, 1907 was herein revised. Based on detailed morphological comparisons, only the populations distributed in Madagascar and the Comoros are confirmed to be the true C. bouvieri. However, the so-called C. bouvieri from the African continent is a new species, i.e., C. manselli sp. nov. Additionally, the occurrence of some myrmeleontid species in both Madagascar and the African continent is discussed, and the accuracy of these distribution patterns requires further clarification in the future.

The dark side of organic farming: Copper sulphate compromises the life history and behaviour of the walking stick insect, Bacillus rossius.

Organic farming is considered the most sustainable form of modern soil cultivation. Yet it often relies on the use of chemical compounds that are not necessarily harmless for the surrounding wildlife. In this study, we tested the effects of realistic concentrations of copper sulphate-largely used in organic farming as a fungicide-on ecologically-relevant traits of the walking stick insect Bacillus rossius, a species commonly found in the proximity of cultivated fields across Europe. By using second-generation progeny of wild-caught parthenogenetic females bred in common gardens, we measured th

Why Did a Female Penis Evolve in a Small Group of Cave Insects?

The evolution of a female penis is an extremely rare event and is only known to have occurred in a tribe of small cave insects, Sensitibillini (Psocodea: Trogiomorpha: Prionoglarididae). The female penis, which is protrudable and inserted into the male vagina-like cavity during copulation to receive semen, is thought to have evolved independently twice in this tribe, in the Brazilian Neotrogla and the African Afrotrogla. These findings strongly suggest that there are some factors unique to Sensitibillini that have facilitated female penis evolution. Here, several hypothetical factors are prese

The Immuno-Enhancement Effects of Tubiechong (Eupolyphaga sinensis) Lyophilized Powder in Cyclophosphamide-Induced Immunosuppressed Mice.

Tubiechong (Eupolyphaga sinensis) is an important material used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, the immunoregulation effects of E. sinensis Lyophilized Powder (ESL) are unclear. The in vivo study thus designed to elucidate the immuno-enhancement effects of ESL in immunosuppressed mice induced by cyclophosphamide (CTX). Mice were treated with three doses of ESL (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg). Compared with model group, ESL notably increased the immune organ index, mononuclear macrophages function and the level of nature killer cell (NK) (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01), delayed type hypersensiti

An Alternative Treatment Against Acanthocephala ( Prosthenorchis elegans) in Captive Squirrel Monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus) in Mexico.

We provide the first report of Acanthocephala ( Prosthenorchis elegans) in Mexican non-human primates. There has been no known treatment against this parasite except for surgical removal, and this has been relatively ineffective because of the small juveniles. We report the presence of P. elegans in a captive breeding colony of squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus) in Mexico, and we describe a successful treatment protocol. Treatment involved 2 steps: oral administration of the drugs loperamide chlorhydrate (0.5 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) and niclosamide (0.2 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) followed by surgical remov
