[Mesoblastic nephroma in adulthood].

We report a 44-year-old female patient who underwent surgery because of a suspected primary tumor of the renal pelvis in imaging procedures. Histology revealed the diagnosis of mesoblastic nephroma. This tumor represents a special entity of nephroblastoma that rarely occurs in adults. There is no unanimous opinion on the biological behavior of mesoblastic nephroma because the tumor behaves differently. The question of whether nephrectomy is indicated if there are no malignant features is also open. The decision depends on the given case. Nephrectomy can only be avoided if the intraoperative si

Unusual morphology in mesoblastic nephroma.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare paediatric renal neoplasm. It is a diagnostic challenge to the pathologists due to its close differentials having ominous prognosis. We present three cases of CMN with unusual morphology including evidence of renal dysplasia in one of them.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma and polyhydramnios.

Polyhydramnios and premature delivery complicated the pregnancies of three women whose infants were born with renal tumors. In each case the tumor was a mesoblastic nephroma. The liquid of polyhydramnios enhances detection of masses in the fetal abdomen by ultrasound. In the future, mesoblastic nephroma may, therefore, be diagnosed antenatally. Tumors in these infants, which have proved in most cases to be benign, are usually cured by surgical removal. Occasionally, local infiltration and adhesions prevent removal. The fate of the infant with residual tumor is not known.

Atypical mesoblastic nephroma. Pathologic characterization of a potentially aggressive variant of conventional congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

A case of an aggressive variant of conventional congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) occurred in a 10-month-old male infant. The tumor proved to be fatal, with two abdominal recurrences, but no metastases were found. Of the various terms used to designate the tumor, atypical mesoblastic nephroma (AMN) is preferred. We reviewed 17 previously reported cases to attempt pathologic characterization of AMN. The features that distinguish AMN from CMN are as follows: (1) atypical gross features consisting of one or more of the following: fleshy areas, foci of hemorrhage, necrosis, involvement of adja

Prenatal diagnosis of congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is a rare renal tumor that is diagnosed during pregnancy and is associated with polyhydramnios, prematurity, and neonatal hypertension. Differential diagnoses include Wilms tumor, adrenal neuroblastoma, and other abdominal tumors. We report a case of congenital mesoblastic nephroma detected by prenatal ultrasonography as a large fetal renal mass with polyhydramnios at 32 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography showed a 6×6-cm complex, solid, hyperechoic, round mass in the right kidney. At 35 weeks of gestation, the patient was admitted with preterm premature rupture

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma: a case report.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare renal tumor. It can be detected antenatally especially with judicious use of ultrasonography.A premature female neonate 28 weeks' gestation, complicated by polyhydramnios, was born to a 28-year-old woman. An abdominal mass was detected antenatally. At the end of the first week of life, the newborn had hypertension that was controlled by hydralazine. Ultrasonography and CT scan showed a right-sided renal heterogeneous solid mass. Right nephrectomy was performed and the histology showed CMN.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma: report of a case.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare renal tumor with a distinct pathology and a unique clinical, therapeutic, and prognostic pattern. The characteristic pathological feature is uniform mesenchymal spindle-shaped cells arranged in interlacing bundles. The prognosis of typical CMN is believed to be excellent by nephrectomy alone. We report a typical case of congenital mesoblastic nephroma which was prenatally detected, and was associated with maternal polyhydramnios.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma: a single-centre series.

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is a rare disease. Treatment is surgical in the first instance. Chemotherapy has traditionally been thought not to have a role. Recent literature suggests a 50% mortality rate for recurrent/metastatic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a retrospective case review of prospectively collected data. Demographics, histopathology, treatment, outcomes and follow up were reviewed. RESULTS: Nine patients, 6 male and 3 female, were included. The median age at presentation was one month (range 0-7 months); follow-up was for a median of 21.5 months

Mesoblastic nephroma: prenatal ultrasonographic and MRI features.

Antenatal detection of mesoblastic nephroma by US is possible. Reviewing the literature, we found 19 previously reported cases, only 1 of which underwent prenatal MRI. We present a further case diagnosed by US and confirmed with MRI. The imaging findings and differential diagnoses are discussed. Early and correct detection of this rare entity is of great interest, as it may facilitate prevention and management of severe obstetric and neonatal complications such as polyhydramnios and prematurity. MRI can help to evaluate the origin and the morphological features of a fetal abdominal mass.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma metastatic to the brain.

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is generally considered to be a benign neoplasm requiring only total excision. Rare local recurrences have usually been related to incomplete removal, and distant metastases to the lung have been reported three times. METHODS: The authors reported the first case of CMN metastatic to the brain, illustrating a comparison of the histopathology of the primary and secondary lesions. RESULTS: The gross appearance of the renal tumor was that of a benign CMN. On histopathologic examination, there was a single nodule of more cellular tissue with focal

Nucleolar organizer regions in congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

A review of 78 renal tumors in patients under 6 months of age revealed 35 congenital mesoblastic nephromas (CMNs). Based on cellular criteria, 14 were classified as classical, 4 as partly cellular, and 17 as cellular CMN. The mean ages were 24, 11, and 70 days, respectively. There were 13 intrarenal tumors (stage I) but 9 classical, 3 partly cellular, and 5 cellular CMNs extended to the perirenal fat (stage II) and 5 cellular tumors ruptured (stage III). In order to assess cellular proliferative activity, silver staining of nucleolar organizer region (Ag-NOR) proteins was performed on 19 CMNs.

[Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (Bolande's tumor). Prenatal diagnosis].

The authors report a new case of the antenatal ultrasound diagnosis of a congenital mesoblastic nephroma (also called Bolande's tumor) at 33 weeks of amenorrhea. This tumor was found to be associated with acute hydramnios involving premature labor and fetal death by respiratory embarrassment. Congenital mesoblastic nephroma is a very rare entity but is the predominant renal neoplasm in the immediate neonate period. The differential diagnosis between Bolande's tumor and nephroblastoma (Wilm's tumor) is now clear since histopathological features have been precisely described by Bolande. Clinical

A case of fetal congenital mesoblastic nephroma with oligohydramnios.

Although congenital renal tumors are rare, congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is the most common renal tumor in early infancy. It is non-metastatic, well differentiated, amenable to surgical removal, and carries a good prognosis. Polyhydramnios has been detected in most of the published cases of CMN. However, we experienced a rare case of fetal CMN associated with oligohydramnios. A 28-yr old woman at 34 weeks of gestation was referred to our hospital for oligohydramnios and a fetal abdominal mass. An ultrasonography revealed a huge, well-encapsulated mass arising from the right kidney. An

Cytogenetic findings in a case of congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a benign, but locally aggressive, renal tumor of early infancy. Few metastases have been reported, but local recurrence is well documented. CMN is histologically distinct from Wilms' tumor and other childhood renal tumors, and is typically treated by surgical excision without adjuvant therapy. Cytogenetic abnormalities in these tumors have been described and are often compared with abnormalities seen in leiomyomas, fibromatoses, and infantile fibrosarcomas. In particular, trisomy 11 has been suggested as a nonrandom occurrence in CMNs. We describe a cas

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) is a rare renal tumor predominantly occurring in neonates and young infants, and standardized treatment guidelines remain lacking. This study aimed to summarize the clinical features, therapeutic strategies, and outcomes of CMN patients from a single institution to inform clinical practice. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of nine children with pathologically and molecularly confirmed CMN treated at Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between 2015 and 2024. Demographic characteristics, clinical presentatio

Congenital mesoblastic nephroma, nephrocalcinosis, and hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

A cellular variant of congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) occurring in a newborn is presented. Coincidental findings were congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (CHPS) and nephrocalcinotic hypercalcemia that reverted after nephrectomy. As of the day of writing, this multiple association has not been reported. The authors believe that both CMN and CHPS could be interpreted as fibroblastic proliferative-related entities. Transient hypercalcemia seems to be a paraneoplastic phenomenon.
