In a series of 3,968 consecutive autopsies, myelinated nerve fibers of the retina were presented in 39 (0.98%) cases and bilateral in three (7.7%) affected cases; thus, 42 (0.54%) of the 7,936 eyes examined were affected. Myelinated nerve fiber lesions appeared as white or gray-white striated patches corresponding in shape to the distribution of retinal nerve fibers and demonstrated frayed borders. Myelinated retinal nerve fibers were continuous with the optic nerve head in 14 (33%) and discontinuous with the optic nerve head in 28 (66%) affected eyes. By light microscopy and electron microsco

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Abnormal retinal vessels may develop in a region of myelinated nerve fibers, and these vessels may cause vitreous hemorrhages.
METHODS: The clinical histories of seven patients with retinovascular abnormalities in a patch of myelinated nerve fibers are presented. None of the reported patients had other evidence of systemic disease. The cases were traced by a multicentric retrospective study.
RESULTS: Retinal vascular abnormalities ranged from mild telangiectasis to frank neovascularization, with or without obstruction of the capillary network and signs of branch artery an

The myelinated nerve fibers (MNF) are o congenital anomaly characterized by the extension of the myelinisation process anterior from the lamina cribosa. The incidence of myelinated nerve fibers is 0.3-0.6% in patients and 0.54% in eyes from autopsies. Although these represent benign lesion, rarely are associated with retinal abnormalities: vascular abnormality (retinal telangiectasis, cranial-facial lesions, coloboma of the iris, keratoconus, myopia/strabismus, amblyopia). Myelinated nerve fibers asSociated with juxtapapillary haemorrhages was not reported in the available literature. We descr

A 14-year-old hyperopic female with poor vision in both eyes was evaluated for ophthalmic and systemic diseases. The patient had bilateral retinal fiber myelination and greater vision loss in the more hyperopic eye. This was a rare case of reverse Straatsma syndrome, the clinical presentation which may be accompanied with significant vision loss.

Although the myelinated nerve fibers are considered as benign, cases associated with retinal vascular abnormalities (telangiectasis, neovascularization, vascular occlusions) have recently been reported, suggesting a possible pathogenic correlation between these elements. Our observation presents a 44-year-old patient, with a sudden decrease of visual acuity in the right eye, discal and peridiscal myelinated nerve fibers, associated with cilioretinal artery occlusion. The general clinical and laboratory examination, except for a drug stabilized arterial hypertension, did not reveal other local

We aim to report an unusual case of myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNFs) at fovea. A 39-year-old woman presented with visual impairment and her visual acuity was 20/80 in the right eye. Ophthalmologic examination revealed MRNF lesions at inferior and superior poles of optic disc in the right eye. Furthermore, a ring-shaped MRNF lesion with feathery edges was observed at fovea. MRNF lesions are rarely seen at macula, and to our knowledge, this is the first report of an MRNF lesion at fovea.

The authors found the changes of myelinated retinal nerve fibers in one pair of identical twins with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis and two patients with Crouzon syndrome, who were at risk for impaired lamina cribrosa barrier function. This is the first report of progressive and presumed acquired myelinated retinal nerve fibers in craniosynostosis. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2021;58(6):e40-e43.].

An intracranial pilocytic astrocytoma was diagnosed in a 13-year-old boy after he presented with headaches and visual disturbances. The initial ophthalmoscopic examination revealed papilledema bilaterally and myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNFs) in the left eye. Serial ophthalmoscopic examinations demonstrated gradual fading of the MRNFs beginning 2 months after tumor resection and their complete disappearance by 2 years after surgery. The disappearance of MRNFs has been described in the presence of ischemia, compression, glaucoma, and demyelinating disease of the optic nerve. This patient

A 39 year-old Behcet's patient had demyelination of retinal myelinated nerve fibers after recurrent papillitis and vitritis. Oral Prednisolone, cyclosporine, and later periocular corticosteroids and oral colchicine were used but demyelination continued over a 5 year-period. A pseudobulbar palsy with urinary incontinence and pyramidal tract signs developed and azathioprine and corticosteroids were used. Demyelination of retinal nerve fibers stopped and while treatment was underway, the central nervous system (CNS) signs were stable. While the ocular pathology of Behcet's can mirror the CNS sign

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present a case of a patient with primary open angle glaucoma and poorly controlled intraocular pressure, who underwent photodocumented atrophy of myelinated retinal nerve fibers.
CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman with high myopia, refractive amblyopia, and extensive myelination of retinal nerve fibers underwent profound atrophy and regression of the myelination during an 8-year period.
CONCLUSIONS: Myelinated retinal nerve fibers can atrophy and regress because of neurodegenerative conditions such as glaucoma.

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are a well-recognized anomaly of the ocular fundus associated with many ocular and systemic conditions. Myelination is almost always congenital and stable, but progression has been documented in rare cases. Optic disk drusen are the result of a degenerative process at the optic nerve head and are often found incidentally on ophthalmologic examination. To our knowledge, optic disk drusen have only been reported once in association with acquired and progressive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. We present 2 such cases and consider the implications for the pathogene

The trigeminal ganglion, roots and the initial portion of the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular nerves were dissected in 3 cadavers, to study the number, area and composition of the fascicles, and the density and diameter spectra of myelinated fibers. The total number of fibers (x 1000) was 26 in the ophthalmic, 50 in the maxillary, and 78 in the mandibular division, 7.7 in the motor root and 170 in the sensory root. In all nerves, the histograms of fiber diameter had a bimodal distribution. Cutaneous and muscle nerve fascicles clearly differed in the fiber density and diameter. The ophthal

A 45-year-old man with extensive myelinated retinal nerve fibers had an attack of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Serial fundus photographs documented the loss of myelin. Visual acuity in the affected eye decreased to 6/90 (20/300) and color perception was markedly reduced. The visual fields in the affected eye showed dense superior and inferior arcuate scotomas and central depression. These findings were unchanged nine months later, but the areas of myelinated nerve fibers had become smaller.

We report extensive myelinated retinal nerve fibers in a 42-year-old patient with retinal detachment. Fundus examination revealed a horseshoe-shaped tear near the temporal edge. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed and firm vitreo-retinal adhesion was noticed in the area of extensive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. Following vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade, the retina was reattached successfully. In conclusion, retinal detachment may develop in patients with extensive myelinated retinal nerve fibers. Vitrectomy may be performed to treat this condition.

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers are developmental anomalies that are present in approximately 1% of all eyes. They may be associated with ipsilateral high myopia and amblyopia, and also may occur in association with various ocular and systemic abnormalities. Lesions may be congenital or acquired, static or dynamic, and can regress in the setting of several described conditions. The pathogenesis is thought to be due to the presence of ectopic oligodendrocyte-like cells in the retina as a result of a development or acquired insult. Visual acuity is typically poor to begin with, and the improveme

Traumatic degeneration of myelinated fibers was studied by electron microscopy over 5 days following transection of mouse sciatic nerve. Special attention was paid to the mechanism which separates the degenerating part, while preserving the viable part of the axon. Immediately after transection, the opened end of the proximal stump revealed extensive subcellular changes including the disorganization of neurofilaments, and disruption of mitochondria and axonal endoplasmic reticulum (SER). Subsequently, vesicles of round and tubular profiles filled up the whole area of the stump end, and proxima
