Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the uterine corpus presenting as a huge abdominal neoplasm.

A 45-year-old P3L3, referred to us with abdominopelvic mass for further management. Vaginal examination was suggestive of uterine mass. Magnetic resonance imaging. (MRI) of abdomen.pelvis disclosed a uterine mass with equivocal invasion of the fat plane with the sigmoid colon. Coelomic antigen. (CA) 125 was 120.2 U/ml. (normal range, 0-35 U/ml). On exploratory laparotomy entire pelvic cavity was filled with a mass that was seen arising from the uterus and involving the sigmoid colon. Hence, a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopphorectomy. (TAH BSO) was performed, along wit

Lipoblastic nerve sheath tumors: report of a distinctive variant of neural soft tissue neoplasm with adipocytic differentiation.

Benign nerve sheath tumors of soft tissue can occasionally adopt unusual or unfamiliar morphologic appearances that may introduce difficulties for diagnosis, such as multinucleation, bizarre nuclei, intranuclear vacuoles, and other degenerative changes. Tumor cells adopting a signet-ring or lipoblast-like configuration, however, are mostly associated with epithelial malignancies, liposarcoma and melanoma, and have been only rarely observed in spindle cell tumors of soft tissue. We report 5 cases of benign nerve sheath neoplasms that displayed prominent signet-ring cells with lipoblast-like fea

PRAME expression in spindle cell melanoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour, and other cutaneous sarcomatoid neoplasms: a comparative analysis.

Diagnosis of spindle cell/sarcomatoid melanoma may be challenging due to frequent loss of expression of melanocytic marker(s) and histomorphologic resemblance to various mesenchymal tumours, particularly malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST). Overexpression of PReferentially expressed Antigen in MElanoma (PRAME) supports a diagnosis of melanoma when evaluating challenging melanocytic tumours. PRAME expression in MPNST and other cutaneous sarcomatoid neoplasms, however, has not been well characterised. We aimed to determine the utility of PRAME immunostain in distinguishing spindle c

Pilomatrixoma of the Neck/Shoulder Region Mimicking a Rapidly Growing Neoplasm of Peripheral Nerve Sheath Origin in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Neurofibroma is the most common neoplasm of this disease. This lesion is characterized by circumscribed soft or knotty skin tumors derived from peripheral nerve sheath cells. Numerous other neoplasms have been described for this tumor predisposition syndrome. This case report adds the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the case of an NF1 patient in whom the rapidly growing, nodular, subcutaneous tumor initially led to the suspicion of a malignant neoplasm. The tumor proved to be pilomatrixoma, which closely adhe

Four Cases of the Melanotic Variant of Malignant Nerve Sheath Tumour: a Rare, Aggressive Neoplasm in Young Dogs with a Predilection for the Spinal Cord.

Four cases of a rare melanotic variant of malignant nerve sheath tumour (MNST) in dogs are described. All four cases presented with neurological clinical signs due to multicentric, intradural, intra- and extraparenchymal neoplasms that surrounded the spinal and cranial nerves and infiltrated the adjacent spinal cord and brain. The dogs were young (3 months to 3 years of age), all were female and four different breeds were represented. Characteristic histological features were interweaving fascicles of spindle-shaped cells, sometimes with an architecture reminiscent of Antoni A and B patterns.

The Challenge of Cancer Genomics in Rare Nervous System Neoplasms: Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors as a Paradigm for Cross-Species Comparative Oncogenomics.

Comprehensive genomic analyses of common nervous system cancers provide new insights into their pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Although analogous studies of rare nervous system tumors are needed, there are major barriers to performing such studies. Cross-species comparative oncogenomics, identifying driver mutations in mouse cancer models and validating them in human tumors, is a promising alternative. Although still in its infancy, this approach is being applied to malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs), rare Schwann cell-derived malignancies that occur sporadically, after

Multiple Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors, Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor and Atypical Neurofibromatous Neoplasm With Uncertain Biologic Potential Developing in A Single Patient With Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Syndrome.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common human genetic disease. In these patients, the incidence of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) is increased. A male patient in his forties with neurofibromatosis 1, presented with the coexistence of multiple GISTs located at intestinal and colonic mesentery, MPNST located at his leg and atypical neurofibromatous neoplasm with uncertain biologic potential located at colonic mesentery. By FISH, the MPNST harbored CDKN2A loss and recurred 1 year later. After reresection and radiotherapy, the

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor: pathology and genetics.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are soft tissue neoplasms that show differentiation toward cells of the nerve sheath. They often arise from peripheral nerves or preexisting benign nerve sheath tumors and are generally high-grade neoplasms, which behave aggressively with high incidence of distant metastases. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor can be histologically diverse and is difficult to diagnose because of its morphological overlap with a variety of other sarcomas and its lack of specific immunohistochemical markers or genetic profile. We review the pathology of malignant per

Review and update in the diagnosis of peripheral nerve sheath tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although tumors with nerve sheath differentiation are vast, the main clinically significant problems faced by the pathologist are the separation of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) from histologic mimics, the diagnosis of neurofibromatous neoplasms with atypical features, and the separation of cutaneous neurofibromatous neoplasms from melanoma. This review briefly discusses a variety of common nerve sheath tumors and summarizes recent advances on these diagnostic fronts. RECENT FINDINGS: Much of recent work has focused on abnormalities in polycomb repressiv

Immunohistochemical recognition of human nerve sheath tumors by anti-Leu 7 (HNK-1) monoclonal antibody.

Using relatively high dilutions of anti-Leu 7 monoclonal antibody and a four-step peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) reaction in paraffin-embedded tissues, we tested the affinity of this antibody to the cells of 47 human nerve sheath tumors and 22 other tumors in which the differential diagnosis with nerve sheath neoplasms is known to arise. Of all the nerve sheath tumors studied 68%, including 80% of the schwannomas, contained anti-Leu 7-positive cells. All 22 non-schwannian neoplasms were entirely negative. Specimens of eight experimental malignant rat schwannomas were also negative for anti-Le

Diagnostic Pathology of Tumors of Peripheral Nerve.

Neoplasms of the peripheral nervous system represent a heterogenous group with a wide spectrum of morphological features and biological potential. They range from benign and curable by complete excision (schwannoma and soft tissue perineurioma) to benign but potentially aggressive at the local level (plexiform neurofibroma) to the highly malignant (malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors [MPNST]). In this review, we discuss the diagnostic and pathologic features of common peripheral nerve sheath tumors, particularly those that may be encountered in the intracranial compartment or in the spine

Nerve Sheath Tumor in a Cynomolgus Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) and Diagnostic Differentiation from Amelanotic Melanoma.

There are few reports describing spontaneous neoplasms in cynomolgus macaques, despite the frequent use of this species in laboratory research. This report describes cytologic, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings of a cutaneous to subcutaneous nerve sheath tumor located within the haired skin of the abdomen of a 2.5-y-old, intact, female, captive Mauritius cynomolgus macaque. The nerve sheath tumor was well demarcated, partially encapsulated, densely cellular, and extended from the subcutis to the most superficial dermis, abutting the epidermis. Neoplastic cells formed intersecting st

Tumors and tumor-like lesions of peripheral nerves.

The diagnosis of a peripheral nerve tumor can often be suggested on imaging. Direct continuity with a neural structure or location along a typical nerve distribution, shape, and intrinsic magnetic resonance (MR) signal characteristics represent the most important signs in this regard. Although several nonneoplastic nerve lesions can be specifically diagnosed by MR imaging, benign and malignant neoplasms of peripheral nerves can usually not be distinguished with confidence. This article reviews the MR imaging appearance, clinical and pathological features of schwannoma, localized neurofibroma,

Ultrastructure of capillaries in acoustic neurilemmoma.

The microvasculature of normal acoustic nerve tissue and small intracanalicular and large extracanalicular neurilemmomas was analyzed by electron microscopy. The capillaries of normal acoustic nerve were nonfenestrated, but the microvasculature in nerve-sheath neoplasms was fenestrated. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia of endothelial cells were observed only in the small lesions. The proliferated and enlarge endothelial cells often partially occluded the vascular lumen and formed multichannel vascular lumina. Many fenestrae of capillaries were found in small neoplasms, but these were rarely identif

Peripheral tumor and tumor-like neurogenic lesions.

Neoplasms of neurogenic origin account for about 12% of all benign and 8% of all malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Traumatic neuroma, Morton neuroma, lipomatosis of a nerve, nerve sheath ganglion, perineurioma, benign and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) are included in this group of pathologies. Clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients with neurogenic tumors and pseudotumors often reveals distinctive features. In this context, advanced imaging techniques, especially ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) play an important role in the characterization of these lesions.

Rare Occurrence of a Pancreatic Schwannoma With Melanocytic Differentiation.

A melanocytic schwannoma is a rare nerve sheath tumor characterized by Schwann cells producing melanin pigment, comprising less than 1% of nerve sheath tumors. Pancreatic schwannomas are very uncommon, with fewer than 100 reported in the literature. This case reports an 82-year-old woman who presented with abdominal and back pain and was found to have a mass in the pancreatic uncinate process. Biopsy confirmed a nerve sheath tumor with melanocytic differentiation. This case shows the rarity and diagnostic and management challenges of pancreatic melanocytic schwannomas. In addition, this case h

Second primary malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the paranasal sinuses after nasopharynx carcinoma.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are uncommon neoplasms that arise out of Schwann cells from the peripheral nerves, which rarely occur in the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Especially with the increasing long-term survival of patients with nasopharynx carcinoma, second primary cancers can be diagnosed. Second primary cancers are not uncommon in patients with the prior radiation therapy. However, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the head and neck region after radiation is an exceedingly rare condition. We report the first case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of

Practical Approach to Histological Diagnosis of Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors: An Update.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors encompass a wide spectrum of lesions with different biological behavior, including both benign and malignant neoplasms as well as the recent diagnostic category, i.e., "atypical neurofibromatous neoplasm with uncertain biologic potential" to be used only for NF1 patients. Neurofibromas and schwannomas are benign Schwann-cell-derived peripheral nerve sheath tumors arising as isolated lesions or within the context of classical neurofibromatosis or schwannomatoses. Multiple tumors are a hallmark of neurofibromatosis type 1(NF1) and related forms, NF2-related-schwann

Optic nerve sheath meningiomas: prevalence, impact, and management strategies.

Optic nerve sheath meningiomas are rare benign neoplasms of the meninges surrounding the optic nerve. They are a significant cause of morbidity. While the mortality rate is practically zero, these tumors can blind or disfigure patients. Given that the clinical course can be variable, and treatment has the capacity to cause morbidity itself, the management of these patients can be difficult. We review the literature to discuss the prevalence of optic nerve sheath meningiomas, the association with neurofibromatosis type 2, natural history, and management options and strategies.

The Coexistence of Olfactory Groove with Optic Nerve Sheath Meningioma Presenting with Anosmia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Meningiomas are the third most common intracranial tumors in adults after glial tumors and metastases. Olfactory groove meningiomas often grow without symptoms due to their slow growth rates and location in the frontal lobe. Optic nerve sheath meningiomas are benign neoplasms of the meninges surrounding the optic nerve. The coexistence of olfactory groove and optic nerve sheath meningiomas without any history of neurofibromatosis or radiotherapy has never been reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old female patient was reported with anosmia, headache, memory distur
