BACKGROUND: Although American crows are a key indicator species for West Nile virus (WNV) and mount among the highest viremias reported for any host, the importance of crows in the WNV transmission cycle has been called into question because of their consistent underrepresentation in studies of Culex blood meal sources. Here, we test the hypothesis that this apparent underrepresentation could be due, in part, to underrepresentation of crow nesting habitat from mosquito sampling designs. Specifically, we examine how the likelihood of a crow blood meal changes with distance to and timing of acti

Sea turtles are large reptiles that inhabit the world's oceans and include seven extant species within two families: Cheloniidae and Dermochelyidae. These species are threatened globally, with several subpopulations listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Thailand hosts five sea turtle species, including leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea ), which are significant for their nesting sites along the Andaman Sea coast. Conservation efforts in Thailand include beach patrols, hatcheries, and community education to mitigate threats such as poaching and habitat destruction. L

Visual stimuli and limbic activation varyingly influence obsessive-compulsive symptom expression and so impact treatment outcomes. Some symptom phenotypes, for example, covert repugnant thoughts, are likely less sensitive to sensory stimuli compared to symptoms with an extrinsic focus, that is, symptoms related to contamination, safety, and "just-right-perceptions." Toward an improved understanding of the neurocognitive underpinnings of obsessive-compulsive psychobiology, work in naturalistic animal model systems is useful. Here, we explored the impact of visual feedback and limbic processes o

Nest building is a natural behavior that can readily be analyzed in mice in the home cage environment. Nest building is involved in thermoregulation, positive motivational states, and motor function, and has been proposed as an index for ethanol withdrawal severity in mice. However, nest building outcomes after voluntary ethanol consumption have not been examined. Here, we tested male and female C57BL/6J mice on a 4-day drinking in the dark (DID) paradigm of binge-like drinking with either ethanol or a water control and analyzed nest scores at two time points (48 hours and 7 days) after the la

Nest-building is a multifunctional and evolutionarily conserved behavior across vertebrate species, serving critical roles in rest, thermoregulation, and offspring care. In laboratory mice, nest-building occurs spontaneously under standard housing conditions and provides an ethologically relevant window into innate behavior modulated by internal state and environmental context. Although nest-building is regarded as an innate behavior, emerging evidence demonstrates its plasticity: it is shaped by experience, hormonal state, ambient temperature, and sleep pressure. Moreover, nest-building is se

This study evaluated the effects of providing 3-15 kg of a soluble and biodegradable biopolymer-based enrichment material (blend of biodegradable polymers and natural fibers) to prepartum sows housed in farrowing crates. Fifteen sows were blocked by body weight and backfat thickness and assigned to three treatments: no enrichment material (CONT), 3 kg of enrichment material (BN3), or 15 kg of enrichment material with added nutritional value (BN15; 14.50 MJ ME/kg; composition: a blend of biodegradable natural polymers and natural fibers). The material was supplied 24 h before the expected farro

This study was done to elucidate the relationship between the hormones beta-estradiol, progesterone, prolactin and beta-endorphin and nest-building behavior in rabbit does during the periparturient period. Beta-estradiol increased as parturition approached with a significant increase starting 2 days before parturition (day -2). Progesterone decreased with the progress of gestation, but a significant decrease was observed starting on day -2. Prolactin concentration started to increase on day -2 prepartum but a significant increase in prolactin concentration was not noted until the last day of p

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a neuropsychiatric condition with notable genetic involvement. Against this background, laboratory-housed deer mice of both sexes varyingly present with excessive and persistent large nesting behavior (LNB), which has been validated for its resemblance of clinical compulsivity. Although LNB differs from normal nesting behavior (NNB) on both a biological and cognitive level, it is unknown to what extent the expression of LNB and NNB is related to familial background. Here, we randomly selected 14 NNB- and 14 LNB-expressing mice (equally distributed between sexes

We used a modification of the limited bedding and nesting (LBN) model to evaluate the effects of early-life stress (ELS) on female and male reproductive physiology and behavior in Long-Evans rats. On postnatal day (PD) 2, dams and pups were transferred to a cage containing 100 mL of bedding (LBN condition) or to a cage containing 500 mL of bedding (control condition); bedding conditions remained until PD 10. In female rats, we measured vaginal opening, estrous cyclicity, female sexual behavior and motivation, and anxiety-like behavior. In male rats, we measured preputial separation, the develo

Environmental enrichment (EE) affects brain function and behavior in laboratory animals. In this study, we investigated the behavioral and physiological effects of short-term EE exposure on male C57BL/6J mice. Juvenile mice were housed for 2 weeks under either EE or standard environment (SE) conditions, followed by a series of behavioral tests. Compared with SE mice, EE mice displayed greater variability in nest-building behavior, with some individuals exhibiting delayed initiation. In the open field test, EE mice spent significantly more time in the center zone, suggesting reduced anxiety-lik

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a major public health concern. While Rhodnius ecuadoriensis, a key vector, is traditionally sylvatic, environmental disturbances have driven its adaptation to human-influenced habitats. This study explores a novel factor: how anthropogenic waste affects vector ecology by altering nest compositions. Unlike prior research, this study examines whether human-derived materials in nests influence triatomine colonization. Given rising pollution, particularly post-COVID-19, understanding its role in disease transmission is e

Maternal periconceptional diets have known associations with proper offspring neurodevelopment. Mechanisms for such associations include improper energy/nutrient balances between mother and fetus, as well as altered offspring epigenetics during development due to maternal nutrient and inflammatory status. Using a comprehensive food frequency questionnaire and assessing offspring temperament with the Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (n = 325, mean age = 13.9 months), we sought to test whether a maternal periconceptional diet characterized by high glycemic loading (MGL) would affec

Emerging evidence suggests that females are less sensitive than males to the effects of kappa opioid receptor (KOR) ligands across multiple behavioral measures. The effects of the KOR agonist U50,488 and the KOR antagonist aticaprant were assessed on nest building behavior, an ethologically relevant indicator of overall well-being and affect, in adult male and female C57BL/6J mice. Females required a higher dose of U50,488 to suppress nesting, and a higher dose of aticaprant to restore U50,488-induced impairment of nesting. Females also required a higher dose of aticaprant to decrease immobili

Death feigning (DF) is a widespread antipredator strategy among animals, yet its expression in social insects is not well understood. Here, we investigate DF in 10 species of fungus-farming ants (Attini) using standardized mechanical stimuli that mimicked different levels of predation threat. Across 5880 behavioral trials, both the probability and duration of DF varied markedly with stimulus type, with forceps eliciting the strongest responses. Generalized linear mixed models revealed pronounced hierarchical structuring, with species, colony, and individual identities each making a substantial

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating psychiatric disorders as Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk factors have yielded heterogeneous findings. Differences in time windows between the exposure and outcome could be one explanation. We examined whether (1) mental and behavioral disorders in general or (2) specific mental and behavioral disorder categories increase the risk of AD and (3) how the width of the time window between the exposure and outcome affects the results.
METHODS: A nationwide nested case-control study of all Finnish clinically verified AD cases, alive in 2005 and their age, sex and regi

Communal nesting (CN) is a mouse model of early social enrichment during pregnancy and lactation. In this study, a rat model of CN was developed to determine if CN exerts an epigenetic effect in rats selectively bred for an infantile affective trait (high and low rates of ultrasonic distress calls). High and Low offspring from CN groups were compared to standard reared (SN) offspring on five measures of social and affective behavior at three critical ages. A differential effect of the CN paradigm on High and Low lines was seen in measures of anxiety and arousal, but not in measures of depressi

Direct olfactory inputs to any of the known gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) containing neurons have not been demonstrated. Therefore, the rationale of this study was to examine whether olfactory inputs might in some way interact with the GnRH system(s) to synchronize reproductive behaviors. In order to establish this, we used anosmic mature male tilapia to investigate changes in reproductive behaviors, gonadal morphology, and GnRH1, GnRH2, and GnRH3 cellular morphology and change in GnRH mRNA levels by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Bilateral removal of the olfactory rosettes follo

Abdominal obesity affects many aspects of women's health, and recent studies indicate that hyperandrogenicity (HA) may contribute to the excess of body fat in women. As hormone behavior research attributes male-like play patterns in childhood to the effects of androgens, the aim of the present study was to assess the potential association of such behavior with obesity in adult women. In a randomly selected sample of 40-year-old women (n = 1464), 78% volunteered to respond to a questionnaire collecting information on the effect of other variables on childhood behavior. Self-reported body weight

OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with the nested variant of urothelial carcinoma (UC-NV) of the bladder, by characterization of the clinical picture and the prognostic implications of this rare form of bladder neoplasm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases of UC-NV of the bladder treated in our institutions were revised and data compared with previously published case-reports.
RESULTS: Three patients presented with advanced muscle-invasive UC-NV, of which two had lymph node metastasis at cystoprostatectomy. The histopathology in the latter two cases showed the same picture in the lymph no
