A framework for analyzing global Caenorhabditis elegans neural activity.

Neurons represent changes in external and internal environments by altering their activity patterns. While coherent brain-wide patterns of neural activity have been observed in neuronal populations, very little is known about their dimensionality, geometry, and how they are correlated with sensory inputs. Here, we recorded the activity of most head neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans experiencing changes in bacterial or control buffer stimuli around their nose. We first classified active neurons into six functional clusters: two sensory neuron clusters (ON and OFF responding to addition and remo

Intrinsic dimension for evaluating and analyzing neural networks for medical image segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Evaluating medical image segmentation models typically relies on expert annotations, which are scarce, costly, and time-consuming to obtain. Intrinsic dimension (ID), defined as the minimal number of parameters required to describe high-dimensional data, has been shown to correlate with model generalization in classification tasks, but whether this relationship extends to segmentation remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, we systematically investigate ID as a label-free indicator for evaluating segmentation performance, including the generalization of standard seg

Analyzing neural activity under prolonged mask usage through EEG.

In recent COVID times, mask has been a compulsion at workplaces and institutes as a preventive measure against multiple viral diseases including coronavirus (COVID-19) disease. However, the effects of prolonged mask-wearing on humans' neural activity are not well known. This paper is to investigate the effect of prolonged mask usage on the human brain through electroencephalogram (EEG), which acquires neural activity and translates it into comprehensible electrical signals. The performances of 10 human subjects with and without mask were assessed on a random patterned alphabet game. Besides EE

Analyzing Neural Activity and Connectivity Using Intracranial EEG Data with SPM Software.

Measuring neural activity and connectivity associated with cognitive functions at high spatial and temporal resolutions is an important goal in cognitive neuroscience. Intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) can directly record electrical neural activity and has the unique potential to accomplish this goal. Traditionally, averaging analysis has been applied to analyze intracranial EEG data; however, several new techniques are available for depicting neural activity and intra- and inter-regional connectivity. Here, we introduce two analytical protocols we recently applied to analyze intracran

Topological defect coarsening in quenched smectic-C films analyzed using artificial neural networks.

Mechanically quenching a thin film of smectic-C liquid crystal results in the formation of a dense array of thousands of topological defects in the director field. The subsequent rapid coarsening of the film texture by the mutual annihilation of defects of opposite sign has been captured using high-speed, polarized light video microscopy. The temporal evolution of the texture has been characterized using an object-detection convolutional neural network to determine the defect locations, and a binary classification network customized to evaluate the brush orientation dynamics around the defects

Top-Down Detection of Eating Episodes by Analyzing Large Windows of Wrist Motion Using a Convolutional Neural Network.

In this work, we describe a new method to detect periods of eating by tracking wrist motion during everyday life. Eating uses hand-to-mouth gestures for ingestion, each of which lasts a few seconds. Previous works have detected these gestures individually and then aggregated them to identify meals. The novelty of our approach is that we analyze a much longer window (0.5-15 min) using a convolutional neural network. Longer windows can contain other gestures related to eating, such as cutting or manipulating food, preparing foods for consumption, and resting between ingestion events. The context

Rapid detection of urinary tract infection by analyzing the dried spots of biological fluids using convolutional neural networks.

To find the cause of infectious diseases such as urinary tract infections, a the diagnostic patterning test was used. In this method, the whole blood and serum samples for every person were dried on a glass substrate to create a special pattern due to formation of central and peripheral regions. This process was performed during 1 h at 25 °C which is much shorter than the classical and instrumental methods. The resulting patterns can be observed by an optical microscope. The study aimed to classify the UTI patients and healthy controls (N=600). In addition, the images of dried patterns were ca
