Altered neural conduction with epidural bupivacaine.

The sites and magnitude of evoked potential response alterations induced by varying masses and concentrations of epidurally administered bupivacaine were assessed from electrodes positioned along the conducting pathways of the monkey. The mass of bupivacaine was the major factor in determining the level and degree of response alterations. At the lower levels of total drug mass, effects were limited to the dorsal root entry zone, whereas higher levels of mass not only increased the response attenuation at the gray matter level but resulted in additional changes in those responses recorded from

[Neural conduction velocity in patients on hemodialysis].

Fourteen patients with chronic glomerulonephritis and with Alport's syndrome were treated. Haemodialysis was performed 2--3 times weekly. The duration of treatment was from 10 months to 9 years. Serum levels of electrolytes, urea and creatinine were determined, the neurological condition was examined and nerve conduction velocity was measured in the lower and upper extremities. The determinations were done before and after haemodialysis. Subclinical manifestations of polyneuropathy were demonstrated with reduced motor-nerve conduction velocity in the lower extremities. A direct effect of singl

Advances in conductive hydrogels for neural recording and stimulation.

The brain-computer interface (BCI) allows the human or animal brain to directly interact with the external environment through the neural interfaces, thus playing the role of monitoring, protecting, improving/restoring, enhancing, and replacing. Recording electrophysiological information such as brain neural signals is of great importance in health monitoring and disease diagnosis. According to the electrode position, it can be divided into non-implantable, semi-implantable, and implantable. Among them, implantable neural electrodes can obtain the highest-quality electrophysiological informati

Neural cell adhesion molecule is required for ventricular conduction system development.

The most distal portion of the ventricular conduction system (VCS) contains cardiac Purkinje cells (PCs), which are essential for synchronous activation of the ventricular myocardium. Contactin-2 (CNTN2), a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules (IgSF-CAMs), was previously identified as a marker of the VCS. Through differential transcriptional profiling, we discovered two additional highly enriched IgSF-CAMs in the VCS: NCAM-1 and ALCAM. Immunofluorescence staining showed dynamic expression patterns for each IgSF-CAM during embryonic and early postnatal stages, but

Conductive polymers to modulate the post-stroke neural environment.

Despite the prevalence of stroke, therapies to augment recovery remain limited. Here we focus on the use of conductive polymers for cell delivery, drug release, and electrical stimulation to optimize the post-stroke environment for neural recovery. Conductive polymers and their interactions with in vitro and in vivo neural systems are explored. The ability to continuously modify the neural environment utilizing conductive polymers provides applications in directing stem cell differentiation and increasing neural repair. This exciting class of polymers offers new approaches to optimizing the po

Immuno-engineered conductive hydrogels: Bridging neural signaling and microenvironmental remodeling for neural repair.

Nervous system injuries and diseases present formidable regenerative challenges, largely due to hostile inflammatory microenvironments that impede endogenous repair mechanisms. Conductive nanocomposite hydrogels have emerged as a transformative class of immuno-engineered biomaterials designed to actively overcome these barriers. Beyond providing electroactive scaffolds to restore neural signaling, these advanced platforms integrate functional nanomaterials (e.g., carbon-based, MXene, and conductive polymers) within biocompatible polymer networks to facilitate targeted immunomodulation. Their c

Altered Neural Responses to Punishment Learning in Conduct Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) is associated with deficits in the use of punishment for reinforcement learning (RL) and subsequent decision making, contributing to reckless, antisocial, and aggressive behaviors. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether differences in behavioral learning rates derived from computational modeling, particularly for punishment, are reflected in aberrant neural responses in youths with CD compared with typically developing control participants (TDCs). METHODS: A total of 75 youths with CD and 99 TDCs (9-18 years, 47% girls)

Ion conducting polymer microelectrodes for interfacing with neural networks.

We have examined the stimulation and recording properties of conjugated polymer microelectrode arrays as interfaces with neural networks of dissociated cortical cells. In particular the stimulation properties were investigated as a means of supplying a neural network with information. The stimulation efficiency at low stimulation voltages was evaluated and referenced to bare indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. The polymer electrodes were electrochemically polymerized from a blend of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) and ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) onto ITO mi

Neural Correlates of Empathy in Boys With Early Onset Conduct Disorder.

Background: A deficit in empathy has repeatedly been described in individuals with conduct disorder (CD), and in particular in those with callous unemotional traits. Until now, little is known about the neural basis of empathy in children and adolescents with early onset conduct disorder. The aim of this study was to examine neural responses during empathizing in children and adolescents with CD with a task that allowed to differentiate between the judgment of the emotional states of other people and the own emotional response to other people's emotional state. Moreover, we investigated associ

Neural abnormalities in early-onset and adolescence-onset conduct disorder.

CONTEXT: Conduct disorder (CD) is characterized by severe antisocial behavior that emerges in childhood (early-onset CD [EO-CD]) or adolescence (adolescence-onset CD [AO-CD]). Early-onset CD is proposed to have a neurodevelopmental basis, whereas AO-CD is thought to emerge owing to social mimicry of deviant peers. However, this developmental taxonomic theory is debated after reports of neuropsychological impairments in both CD subtypes. A critical, although unaddressed, issue is whether these subtypes present similar or distinct neurophysiological profiles. Hence, we investigated neurophysiolo

Simulating the Effects of Partial Neural Conduction Delays in the Visual Evoked Potential.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the double peaks or broadening of P100 observed in some cases of optic neuritis by inducing conduction delays in healthy eyes through stimulus luminance manipulation in analogy to the perceptual Pulfrich effect. METHODS: Checkerboard pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) with check sizes of 0.8 degrees, 0.4 degrees, and 0.2 degrees were recorded in healthy participants using two experiment variants. Variant (1) involved binocular stimulation with inter-ocular luminance difference achieved by a 1.8 neutral density (ND) filter, alo

Rapid exhaustion of auditory neural conduction in a prototypical mitochondrial disease, Friedreich ataxia.

OBJECTIVES: In patients with Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), mitochondrial failure leads to impaired cellular energetics. Since many FRDA patients have impaired hearing in noise, we investigated the objective consequences on standard auditory brainstem-evoked responses (ABRs). METHODS: In 37 FRDA patients, among whom 34 with abnormal standard ABRs, hearing sensitivity, speech-in-noise intelligibility and otoacoustic emissions were controlled. ABR recordings were split into four consecutive segments of the total time frame used for data collection, thus allowing the dynamics of ABR averaging to be o

[Sensory polyneuropathy and neural conduction block as an initial manifestation of polyarteritis nodosa].

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic necrotising vasculitis which affects middle calibre arteries and which has a tendency to form aneurysms. It may appear as one of a great variety of clinical forms depending on the vascular territory afflicted. Almost any organ may be involved although the lung is usually unaffected. Neurological manifestations are very frequent in this disease (global incidence being around 80%), especially at the peripheral nervous system level. Multiple mononeuritis is the most usual manifestation classically associated with this type of vasculitis, but it may also ap

Brainstem neural conduction biomarkers in lead-exposed children of Andean lead-glaze workers.

Pediatric lead (Pb) intoxication remains a major medical challenge in some developing countries where Pb is used in glazing industries. Pb exposure is reported to induce neurophysiological and neurocognitive impairment in children. However, the threshold and level of Pb intoxication necessary to induce neuropathology have not been established. Brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) have been used widely as a sensitive biomarker for Pb-induced neurotoxicity. In this field study, BAER neural conduction time was used as a biomarker for central nervous system impairment in Andean children liv

An exceptionally conductive hydrogel for all-organic, ultraflexible, and chronic neural interfaces.

Chronic neural interfaces are essential for advancing brain-computer interfaces, neuroprosthetics, and neuromodulation technologies. However, a long-standing trade-off between performance and longevity persists due to the scarcity of materials that simultaneously achieve superior electrical performance, mechanical compliance, and biocompatibility. Here, we overcome this limitation with an all-organic, ultraflexible electrocorticography (ECoG) design that features a thickness of only 9 µm, achieving low electrode-tissue impedance and durability in vivo. Central to this design is a conductive hy

Abnormal neural responses to emotional visual stimuli in adolescents with conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is widely held that aggression and antisocial behavior arise as a consequence of a deficiency in responding to emotional cues in the social environment. We asked whether neural responses evoked by affect-laden pictures would be abnormal in adolescents with conduct disorder (CD). METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging during passive viewing of pictures with neutral or strong negative affective valence was performed in 13 male adolescents with severe CD aged 9 to 15 years and in 14 healthy age-matched control subjects. RESULTS: Main effects for negative-neutral affective
