Neural system identification approaches use empirical data to fit the stimulus-response functions of neurons. Augmented by deep neural networks, such models have achieved high predictive performance and allow to perform in silico experiments to test hypotheses. Yet, many of these methods ignore common features in visual systems, such as inhibitory interactions between neurons, which are essential for nonlinear neural computation. Here, we incorporate inhibition as an inductive bias into a deep model for neural prediction and investigate the influence of inhibition on the learned transfer funct

INTRODUCTION: Prevalent models of sexual desire, arousal and orgasm postulate that they result from an excitatory process, whereas disorders of sexual desire, arousal and orgasm result from an inhibitory process based on psychosocial, pharmacological, medical, and other factors. But neuronal excitation and active neuronal inhibition normally interact at variable intensities, concurrently and continuously. We propose herein that in conjunction with neuronal excitation, neuronal inhibition enables the generation of the intense, non-aversive pleasure of orgasm. When this interaction breaks down,

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a chronic spinal cord compression disorder associated with degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Although morphological alterations in brain regions associated with CSM have been reported, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aims to reveal the structural changes among different brain regions in CSM and their complex associations with specific transcriptional expression patterns.
METHODS: The study includes 170 CSM patients and 79 healthy controls(age range: 40-65 years). MRI is use

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence shows that the serotonin 2A receptor (5-hydroxytryptamine2A receptor, 5-HT2AR) is critically involved in the formation of visual hallucinations and cognitive impairments in lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD)-induced states and neuropsychiatric diseases. However, the interaction between 5-HT2AR activation, cognitive impairments and visual hallucinations is still poorly understood. This study explored the effect of 5-HT2AR activation on response inhibition neural networks in healthy subjects by using LSD and further tested whether brain activation during response inhibi

A neural network model of classical conditioning is applied to the description of some aspects of the psychopharmacology of latent inhibition (LI). According to the model, LI is manifested because preexposure of the conditioned stimulus (CS) reduces Novelty, defined as proportional to the sum of the mismatches between predicted and observed events, thereby reducing attention to the CS and retarding conditioning. In the framework of the model, it is assumed that indirect dopaminergic (DA) agonists (e.g. amphetamine and nicotine) increase, and DA receptor antagonists (e.g. haloperidol and alpha-

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric bipolar disorder is characterized by core deficits in mood and executive function and commonly co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We aimed to examine response inhibition in this population, as an element of executive function, which, if aberrant, may interfere with learning and information processing.
METHODS: Children (9-18 years) with bipolar I or II disorder (BD, n = 26) and age, gender, and intelligence quotient (IQ) comparable healthy children (HC, n = 22) without any psychopathology were given a standardized Go/NoGo computerized task me

The replica method has played a key role in analyzing systems with disorder, e.g., the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model, and associative neural networks. Here we study the influence of disorder in the lateral inhibition type interactions on the cooperative and uncooperative behavior of recurrent neural networks by using the replica method. Although the interaction between neurons has a dependency on distance, our model can be solved analytically. Bifurcation analysis identifies the boundaries between paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, spin-glass, and localized phases. In the localized phase, the n

The innate immune system is activated by infection and injury to release pro-inflammatory cytokines, which activate macrophages and neutrophils and modulate specific cellular responses. The magnitude of the cytokine response is critical, because a deficient response may result in secondary infections, while an excessive response may be more injurious than the original insult. We recently described a neural pathway, termed the "cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway", that reflexively monitors and adjusts the inflammatory response by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis. Efferent signa

The present study tested the hypothesis that activation of the parasympathetic nervous system could attenuate sympathetic activation to the pancreas. To test this hypothesis, we measured pancreatic norepinephrine (NE) spillover (PNESO) in anesthetized dogs during bilateral thoracic sympathetic nerve stimulation (SNS; 8 Hz, 1 ms, 10 mA, 10 min) with and without (randomized design) simultaneous bilateral cervical vagal nerve stimulation (VNS; 8 Hz, 1 ms, 10 mA, 10 min). During SNS alone, PNESO increased from the baseline of 431 +/- 88 pg/min to an average of 5,137 +/- 1,075 pg/min (P < 0.05) ove

Gestational exposure to ethanol causes defects in neuronal migration, fasciculation, and synaptogenesis, developmental events that depend on the patterned expression and function of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). Recombinant human osteogenic protein-1 (hOP-1) increases cell-cell adhesion and promotes cell clustering in proliferating neuroblastoma x glioma hybrid NG108-15 cells by strongly inducing N-CAM and L1. Here we show that concentrations of ethanol achieved during social drinking inhibit hOP-1-induced cell clustering without affecting cell proliferation, the induction and cell surface e

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence suggests that adverse experiences have long-term effects on executive functioning and underlying neural circuits. Previous work has identified functional abnormalities during inhibitory control in frontal brain regions in individuals exposed to adversities. However, these findings were mostly limited to specific adversity types such as maltreatment and prenatal substance abuse.
METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal birth cohort study (n = 121, 70 females) to investigate the association between adversities and brain responses during inhibitory control. At the

Task switching is one of the typical paradigms to study cognitive control. When switching back to a recently inhibited task (e.g., "A" in an ABA sequence), the performance is often worse compared to a task without N-2 task repetitions (e.g., CBA). This difference is called the backward inhibitory effect (BI effect), which reflects the process of overcoming residual inhibition from a recently performed task (i.e., deinhibition). The neural mechanism of backward inhibition and deinhibition has received a lot of attention in the past decade. Multiple brain regions, including the frontal lobe, par

Human and non-human primate studies have examined neural responses to action and inhibition of action. However, it remains unclear whether the cerebral processes supporting these two distinct responses are differentially modulated by reward. In a sample of 35 healthy human adults, we examined brain activations to action and inhibition of action in a reward go/no-go task, with approximately ⅔ go and ⅓ no-go trials. Correct go and no-go trials were rewarded with $1 or ¢5 in reward sessions. Behaviorally, reward facilitated go and impeded no-go. A conjunction analysis showed shared activation to

Loss of behavioral control is a hallmark of addiction. Individual differences in basic cognitive processes such as response inhibition may be important for interrupting automatic behaviors associated with smoking and supporting prolonged abstinence. To examine how response inhibition and error monitoring processes differ as a function of smoking status, current smokers, former smokers and never smokers (N=126) completed a simple Go/No-Go task while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. All groups performed similarly on the task and similarly engaged the inferior frontal gyrus and d

Activation of receptors for norepinephrine or serotonin in the central nervous system by i.v. injection of clonidine (10-50 micrograms/kg) or 5-hydroxytryptophan (20-40 mg/kg) inhibits phrenic neural discharges in anesthetized, artificially ventilated cats. Clonidine induces a rapid and complete inhibition of phrenic nerve activity which lasts for 1 to 3.2 hr. The inhibition is prevented by prior administration of phenoxybenzamine (10 mg/kg) or tolazoline (3 mg/kg). 5-Hydroxytryptophan, injected after inhibition of peripheral amino acid decarboxylase (carbidopa, 30-50 mg/kg), elicits a gradual

Lateral inhibition is a central principle in sensory system function. It is thought to operate by the activation of inhibitory neurons that restrict the spatial spread of sensory excitation. However, the neurons, computations and mechanisms underlying cortical lateral inhibition remain debated, and its importance for perception remains unknown. Here we show that lateral inhibition from parvalbumin neurons in mouse primary visual cortex reduced neural and perceptual sensitivity to visual contrast in a uniform subtractive manner, whereas lateral inhibition from somatostatin neurons more effectiv

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune neuropathies can result in long-term disability and incomplete recovery, despite adequate first-line therapy. Kinesin-5 inhibition was shown to accelerate neurite outgrowth in different preclinical studies. Here, we evaluated the potential neuro-regenerative effects of the small molecule kinesin-5 inhibitor monastrol in a rodent model of acute autoimmune neuropathies, experimental autoimmune neuritis.
METHODS: Experimental autoimmune neuritis was induced in Lewis rats with the neurogenic P2-peptide. At the beginning of the recovery phase at day 18, the animals were trea

Although response inhibition is thought to be important in borderline personality disorder (BPD), little is known about its neurophysiological basis. This study aimed to provide insight into this issue by capitalizaing on the high temporal resolution of electroencephalography and information provided by source localization methods. To this end, twenty unmedicated patients with BPD and 20 healthy control subjects performed a modified go/no-go task designed to better isolate the brain activity specifically associated with response inhibition. Event-related potentials (ERP) were measured and furt

The successful inhibition of sexual thoughts, desires, and behaviors represents an essential ability for adequate functioning in our daily life. Evidence derived from lesion studies indicates a link between sexual inhibition and the general ability for behavioral and cognitive control. This is further supported by the high comorbidity of sexual compulsivity with other inhibition-related disorders. Here, we aimed at investigating whether sexual and general inhibition recruit overlapping or distinct neural correlates in the brain. Furthermore, we investigated the specificity of two different kin
