Computer-assisted image classification: use of neural networks in anatomic pathology.

Artificial neural networks (ANN) implemented on digital computers have received much attention for interpretation of images in pathology and cytology. Most such images are too complex for current ANN to interpret directly; instead, ANN usually classify the images according to numeric features extracted from them. In experiments on three distinct image classification problems, ANN classifiers performed as well or better than multivariate linear discriminant analysis (a traditional parametric statistical classifier). ANN empirically define non-linear multivariate decision boundaries, and can com

Efficient convolutional neural networks for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia prediction in computer vision.

A dangerous hematological malignancy, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has a survival rate that is drastically affected by how long it takes to diagnose the disease. Though convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have improved medical imaging, the clinical dependability of most previous research is limited due to their reliance on single models, imbalance in the datasets, and absence of statistical validation. This study proposes an ensemble framework integrating pre-trained CNNs (DenseNet-121, ResNet-34) for feature extraction with machine learning classifiers-Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-N

Assessment of locomotion in chlorine exposed mice by computer vision and neural networks.

Assessment of locomotion following exposure of animals to noxious or painful stimuli can offer significant insights into underlying mechanisms of injury and the effectiveness of various treatments. We developed a novel method to track the movement of mice in two dimensions using computer vision and neural network algorithms. By using this system we demonstrated that mice exposed to chlorine (Cl(2)) gas developed impaired locomotion and increased immobility for up to 9 h postexposure. Postexposure administration of buprenorphine, a common analgesic agent, increased locomotion and decreased immo

Computer-aided diagnosis of breast ultrasound images using ensemble learning from convolutional neural networks.

Breast ultrasound and computer aided diagnosis (CAD) has been used to classify tumors into benignancy or malignancy. However, conventional CAD software has some problems (such as handcrafted features are hard to design; conventional CAD systems are difficult to confirm overfitting problems, etc.). In our study, we propose a CAD system for tumor diagnosis using an image fusion method combined with different image content representations and ensemble different CNN architectures on US images. The CNN-based method proposed in this study includes VGGNet, ResNet, and DenseNet. In our private dataset

Recurrent neural networks in computer-based clinical decision support for laryngopathies: an experimental study.

The main goal of this paper is to give the basis for creating a computer-based clinical decision support (CDS) system for laryngopathies. One of approaches which can be used in the proposed CDS is based on the speech signal analysis using recurrent neural networks (RNNs). RNNs can be used for pattern recognition in time series data due to their ability of memorizing some information from the past. The Elman networks (ENs) are a classical representative of RNNs. To improve learning ability of ENs, we may modify and combine them with another kind of RNNs, namely, with the Jordan networks. The mo

Optoelectronic Nanofluidic Neural Networks for Ionic Computing.

Emerging neuromorphic computing technologies aim to replicate the brain's cognitive processes and offer promising capabilities for advanced computation and complex tasks. Building artificial neural networks (ANNs) with robust connections and dynamic plasticity is essential for their implementation. Nevertheless, most existing ANNs rely on solid-state semiconductors, where electrons or holes serve as information carriers. Here, we present a novel ion-based nanofluidic memristor operating in aqueous solutions, which can be integrated to create densely connected ionic neural networks (INNs). The

Computer-aided Veress needle guidance using endoscopic optical coherence tomography and convolutional neural networks.

During laparoscopic surgery, the Veress needle is commonly used in pneumoperitoneum establishment. Precise placement of the Veress needle is still a challenge for the surgeon. In this study, a computer-aided endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) system was developed to effectively and safely guide Veress needle insertion. This endoscopic system was tested by imaging subcutaneous fat, muscle, abdominal space, and the small intestine from swine samples to simulate the surgical process, including the situation with small intestine injury. Each tissue layer was visualized in OCT images wit

Bag of Samplings for computer-assisted Parkinson's disease diagnosis based on Recurrent Neural Networks.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a clinical syndrome that affects millions of people worldwide. Although considered as a non-lethal disease, PD shortens the life expectancy of the patients. Many studies have been dedicated to evaluating methods for early-stage PD detection, which includes machine learning techniques that employ, in most cases, motor dysfunctions, such as tremor. This work explores the time dependency in tremor signals collected from handwriting exams. To learn such temporal information, we propose a model based on Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units along with an attention mechanis

Computer-aided diagnosis of urodynamic stress incontinence with vector-based perineal ultrasound using neural networks.

OBJECTIVES: Adequately defining the anatomical and functional defects in women with stress urinary incontinence prior to surgical repair is essential. Differences in dynamic changes of the bladder neck on perineal ultrasound have been shown to be effective in differentiating between women with and those without urodynamic stress incontinence (USI). This study evaluated a system to diagnose USI with computer-aided vector-based perineal ultrasound. METHODS: We evaluated 48 women with lower urinary tract symptoms, of whom 36 were found to have USI, by urodynamic study and computer-aided vector-b

Causal Interpretation of Neural Network Computations with Contribution Decomposition.

Understanding how neural networks transform inputs into outputs is crucial for interpreting and manipulating their behavior. Most existing approaches analyze internal representations by identifying hidden-layer activation patterns correlated with human-interpretable concepts. Here we take a direct approach to examine how hidden neurons act to drive network outputs. We introduce CODEC (Contribution Decomposition), a method that uses sparse autoencoders to decompose network behavior into sparse motifs of hidden-neuron contributions, revealing causal processes that cannot be determined by analyzi

Microwave diffractive neural network chips for sensing and computing.

Electromagnetic diffractive neural networks (DNNs) enable ultra-low-power, low-latency artificial intelligence (AI) inference, yet optical implementations suffer from fabrication and scalability limits, and metasurface microwave systems remain bulky. We present a chip-scale microwave diffractive neural network (MDNN) fabricated in a GaAs semiconductor process, integrating cascaded couplers and phase shifters to implement a diffraction network within a millimeter-scale footprint. The MDNN chip reduces the size of conventional MDNNs by over four orders of magnitude, achieves a computational late

Accurate computation of quantum excited states with neural networks.

We present an algorithm to estimate the excited states of a quantum system by variational Monte Carlo, which has no free parameters and requires no orthogonalization of the states, instead transforming the problem into that of finding the ground state of an expanded system. Arbitrary observables can be calculated, including off-diagonal expectations, such as the transition dipole moment. The method works particularly well with neural network ansätze, and by combining this method with the FermiNet and Psiformer ansätze, we can accurately recover excitation energies and oscillator strengths on a

Computer-aided diagnosis of carotid atherosclerosis based on ultrasound image statistics, laws' texture and neural networks.

Quantitative characterisation of carotid atherosclerosis and classification into symptomatic or asymptomatic is crucial in planning optimal treatment of atheromatous plaque. The computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system described in this paper can analyse ultrasound (US) images of carotid artery and classify them into symptomatic or asymptomatic based on their echogenicity characteristics. The CAD system consists of three modules: a) the feature extraction module, where first-order statistical (FOS) features and Laws' texture energy can be estimated, b) the dimensionality reduction module, where t

Computer aided detection of ureteral stones in thin slice computed tomography volumes using Convolutional Neural Networks.

Computed tomography (CT) is the method of choice for diagnosing ureteral stones - kidney stones that obstruct the ureter. The purpose of this study is to develop a computer aided detection (CAD) algorithm for identifying a ureteral stone in thin slice CT volumes. The challenge in CAD for urinary stones lies in the similarity in shape and intensity of stones with non-stone structures and how to efficiently deal with large high-resolution CT volumes. We address these challenges by using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that works directly on the high resolution CT volumes. The method is eval

Artificial neural networks in computer-assisted classification of heart sounds in patients with porcine bioprosthetic valves.

The paper describes the design, training and testing of a three-layer feed-forward back-propagation neural network for the classification of bioprosthetic valve closure sounds. Forty-seven patients with a porcine bioprosthetic valve inserted in the aortic position were involved in the study. Twenty-four of them had a normal bioprosthetic valve, and the other 23 had a degenerated valve. Five features extracted from the Fourier spectra and 12 linear predictive coding (LPC) coefficients of the sounds were used separately as the input of two neural-network classifiers. The performance of the class

Computer-aided diagnosis of neonatal acute bilirubin encephalopathy with multi-modal MRI images and convolutional neural networks.

Acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) is a serious complication of hyperbilirubinemia (HB). Efficiently detecting ABE in non-ABE neonates with HB by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques remains a great challenge in clinical practice, as both groups may exhibit similar MRI features of T1 hyperintensity in specific brain regions. To this end, a computer-aided (CAD) diagnosis system based on multi-modal MRI images and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) was proposed in this study. A total of 150 patients were included in the study, half of whom were ABE neonates, and the other half were no

Biophysical neural adaptation mechanisms enable artificial neural networks to capture dynamic retinal computation.

Adaptation is a universal aspect of neural systems that changes circuit computations to match prevailing inputs. These changes facilitate efficient encoding of sensory inputs while avoiding saturation. Conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) have limited adaptive capabilities, hindering their ability to reliably predict neural output under dynamic input conditions. Can embedding neural adaptive mechanisms in ANNs improve their performance? To answer this question, we develop a new deep learning model of the retina that incorporates the biophysics of photoreceptor adaptation at the front
