The chemoreceptor projection site encompasses a midline area (0-0.5 mm caudal, 0-0.5 mm lateral and 0.3-0.5 deep with respect to the calamus scriptorius) which includes the commissural subnucleus of NTS. The chemosensitive neurons located in this site fire tonically, without any rhythmic relation to the phrenic nerve bursts, and are not responsive to baroreceptor stimulation. These neurons may serve as a pre-central pattern generator for respiration. The mechanisms which mediate respiratory responses (i.e., PN responses) to carotid chemoreceptor stimulation are as follows. Activation of caroti

Panic disorder is a severe anxiety disorder characterized by susceptibility to induction of panic attacks by subthreshold interoceptive stimuli such as 0.5 M sodium lactate infusions. Although studied for four decades, the mechanism of lactate sensitivity in panic disorder has not been understood. The dorsomedial hypothalamus/perifornical region (DMH/PeF) coordinates rapid mobilization of behavioral, autonomic, respiratory and endocrine responses to stress, and rats with disrupted GABA inhibition in the DMH/PeF exhibit panic-like responses to lactate, similar to panic disorder patients. Following input loss from degeneration, injury, and/or aging, downstream circuits undergo modifications that can impact neural computations. How neural computations across different pathways are affected by common input loss remain understudied. To leverage known cell types, well-defined circuitry, and molecular tools, we use the mouse retina to show how multiple pathways adjust their functional properties differently to common input loss and further locate these changes within each pathway. Specifically, we asked if two OFF ganglion cell types, alpha OFF-sustained (A OFF-S ) and OFF-transient

Many free nerve endings of small-diameter afferents (A-delta or C nerve fibres) respond to craniofacial noxious stimuli and a number of neurochemicals are involved in their activation or sensitization. The small-diameter nociceptive afferents project to the trigeminal (V) brainstem complex where they can excite nociceptive neurones that have been categorized as either nociceptive-specific (NS) or wide dynamic range (WDR). These neurones project to other brainstem regions or to the contralateral thalamus. The lateral and medial thalamus contain NS and WDR neurones which have properties and conn

Objective:To investigate the abnormal functional response of neural pathways of vestibular migraine (VM) patients, located the functional area, and inferred the possible mechanism. Method:Twenty patients of VM, 20 of migraine without aura (MwoA), and 20 of healthy controls (HC), underwent whole-brain blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI during ear irrigation with cold water. We chose the stimulation image and the diapause stimulation image. Analyses explored functional area with BOLD signal change of the three groups. Result:We observed task-positive BOLD signal change in cortical and subc

Research in the neural pathway for vergence is less understood in comparison to the other four visual eye movements. The aim of this study was to review the literature on vergence neural pathways and associated disorders. A review of previous published literature though to March 2016 was conducted. Intracranial pathologies that affect entire neural functioning were found to cause convergence insufficiencies. In contrast, pathologies with a more localised intracranial lesion cause more specific vergence disorders. There is debate as to the potential presence of a "divergence centre." Detailed i

This paper questions whether affordances are allied exclusively to dorsal stream processing within the visual system, or whether in fact different affordances are subserved by functionally independent neural pathways. Using case study evidence from patients with various visual pathologies, I argue that affordances can be categorised into type based upon their respective neurological underpinning. Such categorisation has implications for the extent to which affordances are consciously perceived or non-consciously 'picked up' within the optic array, as well as whether they indicate merely potent

Purpose: This study was conducted in order to evaluate retinal ganglion cell (RCG) function and the neural conduction along the postretinal large and small axons and its correlation with retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL-T) in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) eyes. Methods: Thirty-seven OAG patients (mean age: 51.68 ± 9.83 years) with 24-2 Humphrey mean deviation (MD) between -2.5 and -20 dB and IOP <21 mmHg on pharmacological treatment (OAG group) and 20 age-matched controls (control group) were enrolled. In both groups, simultaneous pattern electroretinograms (PERG) and visual evoked potent

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common, disabling neurological disorder driven by neurovascular and neuroinflammatory mechanisms. Although calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-targeted and serotonergic drugs have improved treatment, many patients still respond inadequately or experience side effects. Acupuncture is widely used as a non-pharmacological alternative, yet its mechanistic basis lacks systematic integration.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Accumulating clinical and experimental evidence suggest that acupuncture effectively reduces migraine frequency, pain intensity, and disability, with sustained

Obesity rates have surged to pandemic levels, placing tremendous burden on our society. This chronic and complex disease is related to the development of many life-threatening illnesses including cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension caused by obesity increases the risk for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity by promoting stroke, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal disease. Overwhelming evidence supports neural origins for obesity-induced hypertension and pinpoints the adipose-derived hormone, leptin, and the sympathetic nervous system as major causal factor

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite ongoing clinical suspicion regarding the relationship between sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction and lower extremity symptoms, there is a paucity of scientific literature addressing this topic. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of contrast extravasation during SIJ arthrography and postarthrography CT in patients with lower back pain and to determine whether there are pathways of communication between the SIJ and nearby neural structures.
METHODS: Fluoroscopically guided SIJ arthrography was performed on 76 SIJs. After the injection of contrast

Technology pervades every aspect of our lives, making it crucial to investigate how the human mind deals with it. Here we examine the cognitive and neural foundations of technological cognition. In the first fMRI experiment, participants viewed videos depicting the use of mechanical tools (e.g., a screwdriver) and digital tools (e.g., a smartphone) compared to simple object movements. Results revealed a key dissociation: mechanical tools extensively activated the dorsal and ventro-dorsal visual streams, which are motor- and action-oriented brain systems. Conversely, digital tools largely engag

Female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes bite human hosts to obtain a blood meal and, in the process, act as vectors for many disease-causing viruses, including the dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. After a complete meal, the female mosquitoes lose attraction to their hosts for several days. New research shows that pharmacological activation of neuropeptide Y-like receptor (NPYLR) signaling elicits host aversion in female mosquitoes. This behavior of mosquitoes shows remarkable similarities to a bacterial-aversion behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans Feeding on pathogenic

The relation between thyrotoxicosis, the clinical syndrome resulting from exposure to excessive thyroid hormone concentrations, and the sympathetic nervous system remains enigmatic. Nevertheless, beta-adrenergic blockers are widely used to manage severe thyrotoxicosis. Recent experiments show that the effects of thyrotoxicosis on hepatic glucose production and insulin sensitivity can be modulated by selective hepatic sympathetic and parasympathetic denervation. Indeed, thyroid hormone stimulates hepatic glucose production via a sympathetic pathway, a novel central pathway for thyroid hormone a

Inflammation and inflammatory responses are modulated by a bidirectional communication between the neuroendocrine and immune system. Many lines of research have established the numerous routes by which the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS) communicate. The CNS signals the immune system through hormonal pathways, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the hormones of the neuroendocrine stress response, and through neuronal pathways, including the autonomic nervous system. The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and sex hormones also have an important immunoregula

Striatum is the central structure controlling movement. It plays a pivotal role in the regulation of voluntary movement, unconscious movement, muscle tone, posture adjustment and fine movement. Dysfunction of striatum causes a variety of movement disorders ranging from the hypokinetic disorders with increased muscle tone, such as Parkinson's disease, to the hyperkinetic disorders with decreased muscle tone, such as Huntington's disease. It is generally recognized that striatum receives the neural movement signals from the motor cortex, and then processes and modifies these signals and subseque
