INTRODUCTION: Although polyneuropathy in patients with immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis has been considered to be attributable to axonal degeneration resulting from amyloid deposition, patients with nerve conduction parameters indicating demyelination that mimics chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) have also been reported anecdotally.
METHODS: We evaluated the electrophysiological and pathological features of 8 consecutive patients with AL amyloidosis who were referred for sural nerve biopsy.
RESULTS: Although findings of axonal neuropathy predominantly in the

BACKGROUND: Intracranial schwannomas are rarely confined to the skull. We here report a large schwannoma localized in the petrous apex that presented with intratumoral hemorrhage.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 35-year-old woman with mild hearing disturbance and ear fullness underwent computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging, which demonstrated a tumor accompanied with intratumoral hematoma in the right petrous apex. Bone marrow was totally destroyed, but the bone cortex was relatively preserved. Pathologic specimen showed that the tumor was composed of proliferation of elongated neoplast

Primary intrabronchial neurilemmas, also called schwannomas, are extremely rare tumors that originate from Schwann cells. We report a case of intrabronchial schwannoma arising in the left main bronchus in an 8-year-old child. The diagnosis was made by bronchofiberscopic biopsy. Although the tumor was benign, the patient was subjected to left pneumonectomy because of destruction of the pulmonary parenchyma distal to the obstruction. The diagnosis of intrabronchial schwannoma was supported pathologically with characteristic findings on Antoni A and Antoni B areas. This case is unique in that it

Immunocytochemical staining based on the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method has shown that some neurosecretory cells (NSC) in the synganglion of the adult female tick Ornithodoros parkeri react with an antibody to bovine insulin. There are 18 regions of paraldehyde fuchsin-positive NSC of which three regions showed specific insulin-like immunoreactivity: anterolateral cheliceral, anteromedial stomodeal and posterior opisthosomal. Immunoreactivity can also be found in the extracellular surface of the neurilemma of the synganglion. This suggests a possible neurohemal site and release of neurohormo

Twenty-four specimens from distal end of the human facial nerve obtained at reinnervation surgery (nerve grafting) were studied by light and electron microscopies. In 21 specimens, with complete severance of the facial nerve but continuous neurilemma confirmed during surgery, regeneration phenomenon was observed. Histological examination of the auricular branches of vagus nerve (2 cases) and auriculotemporal nerve (1 case) with their communication portion showed regeneration of axons into the facial nerve below the level of sectioning. This phenomenon points to the possibility that surgically

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Schwannomas are tumors originating from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath (neurilemma) of the neuroectoderm. Rarely, schwannomas can arise from the retroperitoneum and adrenal medulla. We describe a case of a 71-y-old woman who presented with an incidentally discovered adrenal tumor.
METHODS: Ultrasound and computed tomography scans revealed a lesion with solid and cystic areas originating from the left adrenal gland. The patient underwent complete laparoscopic resection of the tumor and the left adrenal gland.
RESULTS: Histopathological examination and

An 11-year-old Persian boy, born to consanguineous parents, manifested a progressive gait abnormality beginning at 5 years of age. A severe cerebellar disorder developed with associated dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system, but no sign of mental impairment. The sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities were greatly reduced, especially in the lower extremities. Cerebrospinal fluid protein was normal. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed leukoencephalopathy, especially in the cerebellum, but also in periventricular areas. The diagnosis of giant axonal neuropath

Neurilemmoma, also known as Schwannoma, is a benign, slow-growing, encapsulated neoplasm that arises from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath. Although it is extremely rare, it affects the head and neck region in roughly 25-45% of all cases. Intraorally, the tongue is the most common site and is rarely involves vestibular mucosa. Here, we report a rare case of Schwannoma of vestibular mucosa in a 13-year-old girl and contribute a review to the current literature. Clinically, based on age, site, and appearance, a diagnosis of a benign tumour such as lipoma, fibroma, neurofibroma, and b

Senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type (SDAT) is considered either a specific pathological condition unrelated to normal aging or an accumulation of brain aging alterations leading to clinical dysfunction. In the present paper a hypothesis is formulated to reconcile these two issues to a common denominator, i.e. the increased age-dependent deterioration of the neuronal membrane. If this holds true, normal aging and SDAT may be considered as two different aspects of the same problem and specific interventions to slow down the former can delay the onset of the latter to older ages.

All major processes in the nervous system depend on interactions between cells and nerve fibers. In this work we present a novel model of inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields originating from nerve fibers and delineate their influence on cells. By expanding Hodgkin-Huxley's applied current into axial current, governed by[Formula: see text], we reveal that cell-with-neuron interactions are regulated by the strength of the electromagnetic fields, which are homogeneous up to 2.066 μm or 6.606 μm away from neurilemma and axolemma, respectively. At the nodes of Ranvier, these fields reach strengths

Schwannomas (neurilemmomas) are benign neoplasms derived from Schwann cells of the neurilemma and appear most frequently on the auditory nerve or peripheral nerves of the skin. They arise in the oral and maxillofacial region infrequently, and very rarely in the center of the jaw. We herein present a case of a rare mandibular intraosseous schwannoma derived from the main trunk of the inferior alveolar nerve in a 33-year-old man. Fusiform expansion in the mandibular canal was observed and a mass showing the target sign in the mandibular canal was confirmed on T2-weighted and Gd contrastenhanced

Asymmetrical displacement currents in the Ranvier node membrane were recorded in the normal Ringer and under the action of a neurotoxin from the scorpion Buthus eupeus venom and of the alcaloid aconitine. In the total displacement current (DC) at the beginning of the pulse (Ion), two-exponentially decaying components were extracted: a rapid component with the maximum time constant of decay about 70 microns, and a slower one with the time constant of decay--300 microns. At high negative levels of conditioning prepulse (Vc) (-130 divided by -145 mV), the maximum value of the charge transferred b

This study examined CD200 expression in different peripheral nerves and ganglia. Intense CD200 immunoreactivity was consistently localized in unmyelinated nerve fibers as opposed to a faint immunostaining in the myelinated nerve fibers. By light microscopy, structures resembling the node of Ranvier and Schmidt-Lanterman incisures in the myelinated nerve fibers displayed CD200 immunoreactivity. Ultrastructural study revealed CD200 expression on the neurilemma of Schwann cells whose microvilli and paranodal loops at the node of Ranvier were immunoreactive. The CD200 immunoexpression was also loc

Four models are discussed which can be used to predict the behavior of warm-blooded axons, when excited by electric fields. Up to now, most results were obtained with the Frankenhaeuser-Huxley model, but nearly all of them are wrong in time scale and the cathodic block phenomenon was not observable because the temperature dependence of the gating mechanism has been neglected. However, in the corrected form this model reacts with similar excitability as the two other myelinated nerve models which consider that the potassium current is negligible in mammalian axon membranes. A case of idiopathic inflammation of the optic nerve (perioptic neuritis) which simulated optic nerve sheath meningioma is reported and the literature reviewed. In this case, idiopathic inflammation of the optic nerve caused enlargement of the nerve and its sheath, showing a tubular diffuse thickening with a central hypodense area (tram-tracking sign). thus mimickling the cancers morphology idiopathic perioptic neuritis is an important condition for, the differential diagnosis of visual loss when CT demonstrates enlargement of the optic nerve.

Completely isolated identified neurones (LPed-2 and LPed-3) of the left pedal ganglion of Planorbarius corneus were shown to have two kinds of cholinoreceptors (ChR) on their membrane. One kind of ChR is a classical nicotinic receptor which is sensitive to nicotinomimetics and can be blocked by tubocurarine; the depolarization caused by activation of this ChR type is chloride-dependent. The other kind of ChR, which mediates a potassium-dependent hyperpolarization, has some common features with muscarinic (M) ChR of vertebrates, being sensitive to the muscarinomimetics, dioxolane F-2268, methyl
