The neuroanatomy of herophilus.

Herophilus (ca. 330 to ca. 260 BC) was one of Hellenistic -Alexandria's renowned scholars, a leading physician, often named the 'Father of Anatomy'. From cadaveric dissections and possibly vivisection Herophilus considered the ventricles to be the seat of the soul, intelligence and mental functions. Herophilus introduced the term rete mirabile found in ungulates but not in man, as opposed to Galen, who erroneously believed it a vital human network. A founder of the principles of observations in science, and an exponent of measurements in medicine, his accurate dissections resulted in original

Neuroanatomy goes viral!

The nervous system is complex not simply because of the enormous number of neurons it contains but by virtue of the specificity with which they are connected. Unraveling this specificity is the task of neuroanatomy. In this endeavor, neuroanatomists have traditionally exploited an impressive array of tools ranging from the Golgi method to electron microscopy. An ideal method for studying anatomy would label neurons that are interconnected, and, in addition, allow expression of foreign genes in these neurons. Fortuitously, nature has already partially developed such a method in the form of neur

Neuroanatomy of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder is a heterogeneous, behaviorally defined, neurodevelopmental disorder that occurs in 1 in 150 children. Individuals with autism have deficits in social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication and have restricted or stereotyped patterns of behavior. They might also have co-morbid disorders including intellectual impairment, seizures and anxiety. Postmortem and structural magnetic resonance imaging studies have highlighted the frontal lobes, amygdala and cerebellum as pathological in autism. However, there is no clear and consistent pathology that has emerged

The neuroanatomy of Broca's aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Broca's aphasia, a condition characterized by nonfluent speech and difficulty with language production, results from focal brain damage and is most often caused by stroke. Although traditionally linked to lesions in Broca's area (Brodmann areas 44 and 45 in the left inferior frontal gyrus), recent evidence suggests that the neuroanatomy of Broca's aphasia is far more complex, implicating a broader network of cortical and subcortical regions. This study aimed to delineate the specific cortical and white matter features that, when damaged, lead to persistent Broca's aphasia. METHO

Functional neuroanatomy of mania.

Mania, the diagnostic hallmark of bipolar disorder, is an episodic disturbance of mood, sleep, behavior, and perception. Improved understanding of the neurobiology of mania is expected to allow for novel avenues to address current challenges in its diagnosis and treatment. Previous research focusing on the impairment of functional neuronal circuits and brain networks has resulted in heterogenous findings, possibly due to a focus on bipolar disorder and its several phases, rather than on the unique context of mania. Here we present a comprehensive overview of the evidence regarding the function

Functional neuroanatomy of tics.

The therapeutic success of haloperidol in the treatment of Tourette syndrome (TS) put an end to the discussion about a "hysteric" or "neurotic" origin of TS. The cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit has been identified as an underlying neurobiological correlate of TS. In this review we explore the main findings of structural alterations in TS including cortical areas, basal ganglia, hippocampus, amygdala, midbrain, and cerebellum. Based on the structural changes we examine the functional pattern described by the findings of fMRI and (15)O-PET/(18)FDG PET investigations. From the neuroimagi

The functional neuroanatomy of dystonia.

Dystonia is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary twisting movements and postures. There are many different clinical manifestations, and many different causes. The neuroanatomical substrates for dystonia are only partly understood. Although the traditional view localizes dystonia to basal ganglia circuits, there is increasing recognition that this view is inadequate for accommodating a substantial portion of available clinical and experimental evidence. A model in which several brain regions play a role in a network better accommodates the evidence. This network model accommodat

Neuroanatomy in elbow arthroscopy.

An injury to the median nerve from within the joint during an arthroscopic synovectomy prompted a study of the relationship of the nerves to the capsule and bones of the elbow. Six pairs of cadaveric elbows frozen in 90 degrees of flexion and one pair frozen in extension were sectioned at 5-mm intervals, and the distances from the major nerves to the bones and capsule were recorded. One elbow joint in each pair was filled with saline solution. Saline solution insufflation increased the nerve-to-bone distance with the elbow in flexion. The results were 12 mm for the median nerve and 6 mm for th

Chemosensory neuroanatomy and physiology.

Three nasal/oral sensory systems, which are anatomically and physiologically distinct, mediate smell, taste, and irritation. However, all three systems may be stimulated by food chemicals (which have "flavors" for the individual), and their receptors are located in adjacent oral and nasal cavities. The three sensory systems each have tiny cerebral cortical representations in humans, and interact with ventral forebrain areas attributed roles in affect and incentive. The complexity of these interactions makes it difficult for affected patients to identify readily which chemosensory system is mal

[Severe depression : functional neuroanatomy].

Depression is a severe disorder to which some individuals are more vulnerable than others. The study of the neurocognitive basis of the vulnerability to depression is, therefore, of major importance. Several neuroimaging studies have shown the persistence of brain dysfunctions in remitted patients. At the neuroanatomic level, alterations of the amygdala, ventral, medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, cingulate gyrus, hippocampus and basal nuclei, and their connections, have been reported. These impairments have been linked to altered cognitive and emotional processes including a higher

The neuroanatomy of age perception.

The concept of age is a fundamental aspect of mental life. However, it is not clear whether age is more an autobiographical detail we remember, a number indicating the years we live, or an inherent part of our subjective self-perception. An insight may be inferred from the underlying neuroanatomy. To investigate the neuroanatomical basis of age perception, we used lesion analysis in 7 patients with age-disorientation due to acute stroke, as compared to a control group of 9 age-oriented patients. Age-disoriented patients underestimated their age by 17.8±5.0 years. Lesion analysis indicated main

[Neuroanatomy of the Oculomotor System].

After just a clinical examination, the experienced neurologist can assign specific symptoms quite precisely to distinct lesions within the brain and other parts of the nervous system, on the basis of his neuroanatomical knowledge. This also holds true for lesions affecting the oculomotor system. The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive overview of the neuroanatomical basis of the oculomotor system, in order to facilitate the precise spatial assignment of potential lesions affecting the control of eye movements. After a brief introduction, the components of the system are discussed, i

The neuroanatomy of asomatognosia and somatoparaphrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Asomatognosia is broadly defined as unawareness of ownership of one's arm, while somatoparaphrenia is a subtype in which patients also display delusional misidentification and confabulation. Studies differ with regard to the underlying neuroanatomy of these syndromes. METHODS: Three groups of patients with right-hemisphere strokes and left hemiplegia were analysed: G1, asomatognosia+neglect; G2, non-asomatognosia+neglect; G3, hemiplegia only. The asomatognosic group was further subdivided into somatoparaphrenia (G1-SP: asomatognosia+delusions/confabulation) and simple asomatognosi

Sectional neuroanatomy of the face.

Needle electromyography and the injection procedures of the face are difficult because of the small size and close anatomic relations of the facial structures. Local injections of the face have increased in frequency since the introduction of botulinum toxin. This article intends to provide anatomically accurate schematics of innervation of the muscles of facial expression that can be used to interpret magnetic resonance images of the muscles and nerves. Cross-sectional schematics of the face were drawn as they appear in imaging projections. The relevant cranial and spinal nerves were color co

[Neuroanatomy of panic disorder].

OBJECTIVES: Animal model studies may allow greater elucidation of the cerebral circuits involved in the genesis of panic disorder (PD), but these studies have not yet been fully analyzed. METHODS: The authors review recent literature on the neurobiology and neuroanatomy of PD. RESULTS: In this update, the authors present a revision of data that demonstrates the existence of a "fear network", which has as its main point the central nucleus of the amygdale and includes the hypothalamus, the thalamus, the hippocampus, the periaqueductal gray region, the locus ceruleus and other brainstem struct

[Functional neuroanatomy of emotions].

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, functional neuroanatomy of the frontal lobe and limbic system could be uncovered as emotion processing neural substrates. fMRI was used to test the influence of induced emotions on a non-affective, attention-demanding, cognitive task. METHOD: 6 Psychopaths versus 7 controls were analyzed by fMRI with a simon-paradigm after emotion induction. RESULTS: Emotion induction differentially influenced cortical activation patterns in emotion related brain areas like the amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex. CONCLUSION: Structural-morphological neural areas of em

The functional neuroanatomy of autism.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by impaired social and executive functions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive technique that allows investigation of the neural networks underlying cognitive impairments in autism. In this article, brain imaging studies investigating the functional brain anatomy of autism are reviewed. Face recognition, theory of mind and executive functions have all been explored in functional neuroimaging studies involving autistic patients. The available literature suggests an involvement of abnormal functional mechanisms in

Neuroanatomy and neurophysiology in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a major mental disorder, characterized by their set of symptoms, including hallucinatory-delusional symptoms, thought disorder, emotional flattening, and social withdrawal. Since 1980s, advances in neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques have provided tremendous merits for investigations into schizophrenia as a brain disorder. In this article, we first overviewed neuroanatomical studies using structural magnetic resonance imaging (s-MRI), MR spectroscopy (MRS), and postmortem brains, followed by neurophysiological studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) and magnet
