Neurocutaneous syndromes.

Neurocutaneous syndromes (or phakomatoses) are a diverse group of congenital disorders that encompass abnormalities of neuroectodermal and, sometimes, mesodermal development, hence commonly involving the skin, eye, and central nervous system. These are often inherited conditions and typically present in early childhood or adolescence. Some of the abnormalities and clinical symptoms may, however, be progressive, and there is an increased risk of neoplastic formation in many of the syndromes. As a group, neurocutaneous syndromes are characterized by distinctive cutaneous stigmata and neurologic

Neurocutaneous syndromes.

Neurocutaneous syndromes are progressive multisystem disorders in which the dermatological findings may be apparent before the neurological signs and symptoms appear. Timely diagnosis is important for early detection of serious complications such as malignancies, for prompt interventions for learning or developmental problems, and for genetic counseling.

Neurocutaneous syndromes.

Neurocutaneous syndromes are congenital or hereditary conditions that have many features in common: hereditary transmission, involvement of organs of ectodermal origin (nervous system, eyeball, retina, and skin), slow evolution of lesions in childhood and adolescence, and disposition to fatal malignant transformation. Except for Sturge- Weber syndrome, these major neurocutaneous syndromes are genetically determined, although sporadic cases can occur. This article reviews the clinical features of the more common neurocutaneous syndromes, including tuberous sclerosis complex, neurofibromatosis,

Neurocutaneous syndromes.

The neurocutaneous syndromes are a diverse group of diseases characterized by widespread abnormalities in structures of ectodermal origin, including the skin, eye, and central and peripheral nervous systems. These syndromes are particularly interesting to the clinician because they often present with cutaneous signs at birth or very early in life. These skin markers may be clues to widespread abnormality that may later develop in the nervous system and other areas of the body, making early diagnosis from careful assessment of cutaneous signs a particularly challenging task. Common Neurocutaneous Syndromes.

Neurocutaneous syndromes are a diverse group of neurologic disorders with concurrent skin manifestations. Most neurocutaneous syndromes have a genetic basis and are believed to arise from a defect in the differentiation of the primitive ectoderm. In this regard, the skin can be a window into the central nervous system and can aid in the diagnosis of neurologic disease in children. The cutaneous signs may be subtle, which places great importance on the physical examination skills of clinicians providing primary care to children. Early recognition can help with proper diagnosis, formulating a tr

Neurocutaneous vascular syndromes.

There have been significant recent advances in the past several years in the field of neurocutaneous vascular syndromes, including the development of more stringent diagnostic criteria for PHACE syndrome, the renaming of macrocephaly-cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita to macrocephaly-capillary malformation to accurately reflect the true nature of the syndrome, and discovery of new genetic mutations such as RASA-1. There have also been advances in the understanding and management of Sturge-Weber syndrome.PHACE syndrome is a constellation of neurologic, arterial, cardiac, ophthalmologic,

Unusual neurocutaneous syndromes.

During the last several decades, the number of these rare heterogeneous disorders described as neurocutaneous syndromes has significantly increased. The criteria for inclusion have become more general, although most of the disorders have dysplastic features, many do not have a tendency for tumor formation. Further, not all of these disorders are heritable and some are reported in only one or two families. Nonetheless, there is some merit for the clinician, geneticist, and embryologist to consider these anomalies of embryologic development on some common ground. Knowledge of these syndromes is

Neurocutaneous Syndromes and Brain Tumors.

The etiology of most childhood cancer remains largely unknown, but is likely attributable to random or induced genetic aberrations in somatic tissue. However, a subset of children develops cancer in the setting of an underlying inheritable condition involving a germline genetic mutation or chromosomal aberration. The term "neurocutaneous syndrome" encompasses a group of multisystem, hereditary disorders that are associated with skin manifestations as well as central and/or peripheral nervous system lesions of variable severity. This review outlines the central nervous system tumors associated

[Neurocutaneous syndromes with vascular alterations].

There are several syndromes in which neurological and cutaneous alterations of vascular origin, among other symptoms, occur. The key point of this fact is that these cutaneous signs permit early diagnosis, thus helping in further recognition of more complex syndromes and preventing unnecessary, harmful and costly diagnostic procedures or having to wait until the appearance of neurological signs. Therefore, these diseases should be classified attending to the most notorious vascular lesions they show, though they may show other less frequent cutaneous vascular lesions. In this way, these syndro

Neurosurgical Considerations of Neurocutaneous Syndromes.

The phakomatoses are a group of genetic and acquired disorders characterized by neurologic, cutaneous, and often ocular manifestations, thus commonly referred to as neurocutaneous syndromes. In several of these conditions the underlying genetic pathophysiology has been elucidated, which will continue to play an important role in advancing therapeutic techniques. This article focuses on several examples of such neurocutaneous syndromes, with special attention to the relevant neurosurgical considerations of these patients.

Neurocutaneous syndromes and retroperitoneal tumors.

A patient with multiple basal cell carcinoma syndrome, a symptom complex characteristized by nevoid basal cell carcinomas of the skin, jaw cysts, skeletal abnormalities, and hyporesponsiveness to parathormone is presented. In addition, the patient had a retroperitoneal lymphagiomyoma, a hamartomatous lesion, causing ureteral obstruction. The association of neuroectodermic syndromes and retroperitoneal and intra-abdominal tumors is reviewed.

A diagnostic approach to neurocutaneous syndromes.

Neurocutaneous syndromes are a group of genetically and phenotypically diverse disorders that primarily affect the skin, central and peripheral nervous systems, and eyes. Classifying neurocutaneous syndromes based on genetic mechanisms often proves impractical in routine clinical settings. This review proposes a practical classification of neurocutaneous syndromes based on their neurological manifestations, including neoplastic lesions, epilepsy, vascular abnormalities, and ataxia. In this narrative review, we examined original articles and reviews that explore neurocutaneous syndromes, publis

Neurocutaneous syndromes in art and antiquities.

Neurocutaneous syndromes are a group of genetic disorders affecting the skin, the central and peripheral nervous system, and the eye with congenital abnormalities and/or tumors. Manifestations may also involve the heart, vessels, lungs, kidneys, endocrine glands and bones. When people with these disorders are portrayed in works of art, physicians have speculated on possible diagnoses. In particular, many figures have been labeled as possibly having a neurocutaneous disorder, sometimes distorting the popular conception of these diseases. We review numerous documents, drawings, prints, lithograp
