Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy.

BACKGROUND: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign but locally aggressive neoplasm of neural crest origin, typically arising in the anterior maxilla of infants under 1 year of age. Clinically, it often mimics an eruption cyst, leading to potential diagnostic delay. METHODS: A 4-month-old male presented with a painless, rapidly enlarging swelling in the left anterior maxilla. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic evaluations were performed. Excisional biopsy under general anesthesia was chosen as definitive management. Preoperative urinary vanillylmandelic ac

[Orbital melanotic neuroectodermal tumor in an infant].

A 3-month-old infant patient presented with a 1-week history of a quickly progressive mass in the left eye. A hard, irregularly shaped tumor was found in the superolateral orbit. B-scan showed an uneven hypoecho and an undefined lesion. On the orbital CT, a soft tissue mass was located around the left zygomatic tubercle, involving part of the bone and lacrimal gland. The left orbital mass was removed under general anesthesia after admission. The histological and immunohistochemical examination revealed it was a melanotic neuroectodermal tumor. The infant patient was followed up for 6 months af

Melanotic primitive neuroectodermal (neuroepithelial) tumor of medulla.

A 69-year-old man had a melanotic primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the medulla displaying various neuroepithelial elements including undifferentiated neuroepithelial cells forming Homer Wright's rosettes as well as neoplastic neuroglia resembling those seen in medulloblastoma. The neuroglial tumor cells were verified by demonstrating glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the cells. These findings support the concept that the primitive neuroectodermal tumor and medulloblastoma are similar neoplasms. They have been described by such diverse names as melanotic medulloblastomas and progonoma

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Case Image.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare benign neoplasm that can be mistaken for malignancies due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians and aggressive clinical appearance. We herein contributed by reporting an additional case of MNTI characterized by an extensive extraoral protrusion in a 2-month-old infant. The lesion involved the anterior maxilla, cheek, and infraorbital region, resulting the displacement of the nose to the contralateral side, and measuring approximately 10 cm in size. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed. After a 6-month follow-up, the patient

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of the skull and meninges in infancy.

Three cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumors of infancy are presented. Two were localized on the midline, involving the skull and extending subdurally. One was located on the inner aspect of the dura and developed intracranially. Two had a benign course following gross total removal. One had a malignant course, recurring locally and spreading within the brain. The difficulties of removing these tumors when they are implanted on the midline are stressed. Histological features of prognostic value are pointed out. Further support for neural crest origin of these tumors is given.

Malignant melanotic neuroectodermal tumor arising from the pineal body.

A case of a melanotic neuroectodermal tumor arising from pineal region of a 4-year-old girl is presented. The tumor had spread diffusely to the meninges, consistent with malignant behavior. Histologically, the tumor consisted primarily of epithelial elements arranged in tubules, cords and nests separated by fibrous vascular tissue in addition to a small neuroblastomatous focus. Melanin pigment was frequently observed in the epithelial tumor cells, and melanin-laden macrophages were also often observed. No teratoid elements were found. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for neuron

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy and fetal hydantoin syndrome.

Fetal hydantoin syndrome (FHS), a characteristic pattern of altered growth and development, has been well described in recent years in offsprings of epileptic mothers taking phenytoin or other hydantoin anticonvulsants during the gestational period. Recent reports of neuroblastoma in three patients with the FHS further raise the questions of the "oncogenic effect " of hydantoin compounds. A case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) has been studied clinically and pathologically including light microscopy, histochemistry, and electron microscopy. This case strengthens the eviden

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Rare Case Report.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, pigmented tumor. It is a locally aggressive neoplasm of neural crest origin with a high recurrence rate. It occurs in craniofacial sites in more than 90% of cases and most commonly in the maxilla. It may also occur in epididymis, testis, ovaries, soft tissue, and bones of the extremities. It occurs in infants younger than 1 year of age with a slight male preponderance. We report a rare case of a child presenting with midline frontal pigmented MNTI.

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy in the Epididymis: A Case Report.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign neoplasm of neural crest origin that predominantly involves the craniofacial region, involvement of the epididymis being extremely rare, with about 30 cases reported. We report an unusual case of a 5-month-old male with MNTI in the epididymis. The patient underwent orchiectomy. Half a year later, there was no sign of recurrence. Whether preoperative examination or intraoperative frozen examination, the tumor may easily be misdiagnosed as malignancy. Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy should be included in differential

[Diagnosis and management of oral melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathological features of oral melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and pathological data of 13 cases of oral MNTI treated in Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from 1980 to 2007. RESULTS: The age of patients ranged from 2 to 7 months old. Nine lesions occurred in the maxilla, 3 in the mandible and 1 in the cheek. The most common symptom of the disease was swelling. Five tumors were found purple-reddish or blue-blackish. The neoplasm grew rapidly. Only 1 case was diagnosed as

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: A narrative review of dental aspects.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumors of infancy (MNTI) are a rare type of benign tumor that affects the head and neck region. MNTI represents (68-80%) of the tumors in the maxillary region. This tumor is usually located in the alveolar crest, skull, mandible, and brain. Although this tumor is considered benign, it can grow rapidly, with a high risk of recurrence and interference with functions of infancy, such as feeding and breathing. It is also frequently harmful to the surrounding soft and hard tissues or adjacent sensitive vital structures. This study aimed to review the pathological, clinical

Mandibular melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: a role for neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy (MNTI) is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm with a predilection for the head and neck area, most commonly occurring in the maxilla. The vast majority of treatment modalities for all cases of MNTI to date have involved surgical intervention only, with just 9.6 % involving some sort of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of the prior mentioned modalities. There is very limited information available regarding the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, due to its rare nature. In this report, a 4 month old girl presented to our clinic with a chief com

BRAFV600E Mutation in Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: Toward Personalized Medicine?

The melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare neoplasm that primarily affects the maxilla of infants during their first year of life. Complete resection is the conventional treatment and recurrence rates vary from 10% to 60%. The recurrent tumors grow more aggressively and can invade other anatomic structures, such as the nasal cavity, the orbit, and the skull base. The aggressive behavior of MNTIs may require radical resection, which may not be possible in some cases because of its rapid and invading growth together with invasion of vital structures. In these situations, adj

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI), first described almost a century back, is of neural crest origin, locally aggressive, a rare biphasic neoplasm of infancy with a slightly higher male preponderance. In the last 100 years since the first description of MNTI, only around 500 cases have been described from 32 countries. We present a 7-month-old female child with 3 × 2 cm hard swelling in the oral cavity and right-side facial region for 3 months. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a hypodense lesion of size 2.5

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy: Case Report and Review of Management.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare pigmented tumor of the head and neck, which most commonly presents during the first year of life. Most cases present in the bones of the craniofacial region, including the maxilla (60.3%), skull (18.1%), and mandible (10.3%). The alveolar crest of the anterior maxilla is the most common site. MNTIs are locally aggressive, but benign, lesions derived from neural crest cells. However, they have a high rate of recurrence, and ≤6.5% of cases will demonstrate metastasis to lymph nodes or distant organs. They present clinically as an expans

Clinicopathological features of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: Report of two cases.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is an extremely rare, pigmented neoplastic entity of neural crest origin. Histological and immunohistochemical profiles indicate the presence of two components, small rounded neuroblast-like cellular areas and areas with large melanin-containing cells which consist of combination of neural, melanocytic, and epithelial cell types. Here we present two interesting cases of infants with MNTI which have different clinicopathological features. The first case is a 3-month-old female with rapidly growing MNTI involving the lacrimal sac and inferior wal
