[Retroperitoneal neuroectodermal tumors].

Various types of neurogenous tumours occur in the retroperitoneum. Hormonally inactive tumours are often asymptomatic and their diagnosis is mostly accidental. Authors are presenting their recent experience with three cases. They discuss diagnostic options and the therapy of retroperitoneal schwannoma, ganglioneuroma and paraganglioma.

The neuroectodermal tumor of bone.

Four small round cell malignant tumors of bone occurring in children are described. There was no catecholamine secretion and the clinical, radiologic, and biopsy diagnosis in each was Ewing's sarcoma. Glycogen was sparse both on imprints and in tissue sections. The tumors, when extensively sampled, had areas of a lobular growth pattern and Homer Wright rosettes. The rosettes were always focal and varied in complexity from case to case; they were rudimentary in one instance and markedly fibrillar in the most obvious instance. Neuron-specific enolase was demonstrated in tissue sections and in lo

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors in adults.

A retrospective clinical analysis was made of 12 patients with supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) who ranged in age from 20 to 62 years (median 24) and were managed at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1987 and December 1997. Six patients were male and six were female. Most presented with symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and mean duration of symptoms was four months (range: 1-12 months). The tumors were located in the posterior parieto-occipital area in six cases and the mean diameter of mass of these tumors was 5.3 cm. The characteristic magnetic

Computed tomography of primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

The primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a neoplasm of young individuals that occurs predominantly in the supratentorial compartment. It appears on computed tomography as a bulky mass, often with calcification with predominantly homogeneous enhancement but on occasion with cystic or necrotic areas. Cerebrospinal fluid seeding was observed in more than half the cases in our series. The patients had a short survival period (7-24 months). Despite surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, further growth of this tumor has not been prevented.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of adrenal gland.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the clinical and pathological characteristics of adrenal primitive neuroectodermal tumors for a better understanding of the disease. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of four cases of adrenal primitive neuroectodermal tumors (two male, two female; age 21-30, average 24) was made. All patients went through necessary endocrinological exams, computer tomography scans (for site-specific diagnoses) and pathological tests. RESULTS: No positive result was reported in routine laboratory tests and endocrinological exams. Computer tomography scans showed bulk soft tissue masses

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors in children.

A retrospective review of 36 children diagnosed with a supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) at the Hospital for Sick Children was performed for the period 1970-1995. All children but one received their initial treatment at our institution. There were 18 males and 18 females and the median age at diagnosis was 35 months. Twenty-two PNETs were lobar, 3 were deep in the hemisphere, and 10 were located in the pineal region. One child presented with intracranial leptomeningeal disseminated disease. The tumors were mostly undifferentiated although 22 had some evidence of differentia

What's in a name? Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors and CNS primitive neuroectodermal tumors are not the same.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (P-PNET) are extremely rare. They can be easily misdiagnosed as central nervous system primitive neuroectodermal tumors (CNS-PNET) or meningiomas. Little is known about the optimal treatment and prognosis of these tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the treatment and outcome of 17 patients with intracranial, nonmetastatic, genetically confirmed P-PNET. Three patients were treated at our institutions. Thirteen other cases providing sufficient treatment and follow-up information were extracted from the literature. RESU

Germ cell tumor associated primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

PURPOSE: This retrospective review was done to assess the prognosis and response in patients presenting with primitive neuroectodermal tumor admixed with germ cell tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the 40 patients treated at our institution from 1984 to 1999, 15 had initial stage I and 25 had initial metastatic disease. Median followup after the diagnosis was 25 months (range 4 to 142). RESULTS: Of the 40 patients 15 presented with clinical stage I disease, including 9 treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection and 6 who elected surveillance. Seven of the 9 patients had normal lymph n

Pineal and nonpineal supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Pineal region supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNETs; pineoblastomas) and nonpineal SPNETs are rare tumors that historically have carried a very poor prognosis. With multimodality therapy, including maximal surgical resection, craniospinal radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the survival for patients with pineal PNETs has significantly improved. Chemotherapy alone, at least in conventional doses, appears to be insufficient treatment for younger children with pineoblastomas, in whom there is almost universal rapid tumor progression and death. Survival of patients with nonpineal

Familial aggregation of neuroectodermal and gastrointestinal tumors.

A family with multiple tumors is presented. Four cases were childhood neoplasms derived from the neuroectoderm, as was a malignant melanoma in a young female and a branchiogenic cyst in her brother. He also had an early onset of an adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon. Four further cases of gastrointestinal tumors and one case of acute myelogenous leukemia had occurred in the family. One of the childhood tumors was a bilateral retinoblastoma. It is discussed as to whether the tumors in the studied family were due to a genetic factor resulting in a neuroectodermal embryopathy, or were caused

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy.

BACKGROUND: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign but locally aggressive neoplasm of neural crest origin, typically arising in the anterior maxilla of infants under 1 year of age. Clinically, it often mimics an eruption cyst, leading to potential diagnostic delay. METHODS: A 4-month-old male presented with a painless, rapidly enlarging swelling in the left anterior maxilla. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic evaluations were performed. Excisional biopsy under general anesthesia was chosen as definitive management. Preoperative urinary vanillylmandelic ac

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the heart.

We present a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the left atrium with involvement of the coronary sinus. The initial presentation was of cardiac tamponade resulting from the size of the tumor. There was no evidence of tumor elsewhere, and after complete resection and without adjuvant chemotherapy the patient is well at 2-year follow-up. There has been no evidence of tumor recurrence. This is a rare reported case of resection of a cardiac primitive neuroectodermal tumor without adjuvant chemotherapy. Other cases in the literature have been treated by orthoptic transplantation and resecti

Is esthesioneuroblastoma a peripheral neuroectodermal tumor?

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB; olfactory neuroblastoma) is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm of the sinonasal area and anterior cranial fossa. The histogenesis of the lesion is not clearly delineated, and the broad histological spectrum of ENB has confounded the issue. The location, histological features (neuropil, Homer Wright, and olfactory rosettes), and reported immunocytochemical reactions (neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and chromogranin (CHR) positivity) suggest that ENB may be a neural or neuroendocrine neoplasm derived from the olfactory membrane. Recent demonstration in two of three met

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of prostate.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are malignant proliferations of small, undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells occurring mainly in children and share the same reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 11 and 22 and the same patterns of biochemical and oncogene expression as osseus and extraosseus Ewing's sarcoma. Some PNETs occur in the brain, while others (the peripheral PNETs) occur in sites outside the brain, such as in the extremities, pelvis and the chest wall. They mostly originate in the chest, pelvis and retroperitoneum; in rare cases, occurrence in the head and neck area ha

Rectal primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

We report the clinical, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings of a Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) localized to the rectum in a 17-year-old boy. Notably the 4.5 x 4 x 4-cm sessile mass was spontaneously eliminated through the anus, producing an episode of hemorrhagic shock. Histologically the tumor presented as a proliferation of membrane CD99-positive, small round cells. EWS/FLI1 chimeric mRNA was demonstrated by nested reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis in the tumor tissue. The patient is alive and well 2 years after

Ewing's Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors in Bronchus.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/pPNET), a member of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors, is a malignant soft tissue tumor with small undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells. Primary trachea-bronchial ES/pPNET is very rare. The most common pulmonary ES is due to a metastasis. We describe a case of ES/pPNET which originated in the left basal trunk bronchus. The patient was a 30-year-old male, presenting with irritable cough and fever for 10 days. A tumor of 60 mm in diameter was found in the left basal trunk bronchus, extending to the left lower lobe. No distant metas

Telomere maintenance in childhood primitive neuroectodermal brain tumors.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs), including medulloblastoma (PNET/MB) and supratentorial PNET (sPNET), are the most common malignant brain tumors of childhood. The stabilization of telomere lengths by telomerase activation is an important step in carcinogenesis and cell immortalization. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the major polyphenol in green tea, is a telomerase inhibitor with antiproliferative and anticarcinogenic effects against different types of cancer. In this study, we used real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction to measure the mRNA expression of the huma

Surveillance imaging in children with primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Controversy surrounds the benefits of routine surveillance magnetic resonance or computed tomographic imaging for monitoring children after resection of primitive neuroectodermal tumors. A recent study suggested that serial imaging studies detect only a small minority of tumor recurrences in patients with symptoms. The authors concluded that even in patients with recurrence documented by imaging, no patient with a recurrence survived long (average, 5 mo) and that surveillance scanning is of little clinical value in children with primitive neuroectodermal tumors. We reviewed our experience with
