A retrospective clinical analysis was made of 12 patients with supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) who ranged in age from 20 to 62 years (median 24) and were managed at Seoul National University Hospital between January 1987 and December 1997. Six patients were male and six were female. Most presented with symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and mean duration of symptoms was four months (range: 1-12 months). The tumors were located in the posterior parieto-occipital area in six cases and the mean diameter of mass of these tumors was 5.3 cm. The characteristic magnetic

The primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a neoplasm of young individuals that occurs predominantly in the supratentorial compartment. It appears on computed tomography as a bulky mass, often with calcification with predominantly homogeneous enhancement but on occasion with cystic or necrotic areas. Cerebrospinal fluid seeding was observed in more than half the cases in our series. The patients had a short survival period (7-24 months). Despite surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, further growth of this tumor has not been prevented.

A retrospective review of 36 children diagnosed with a supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) at the Hospital for Sick Children was performed for the period 1970-1995. All children but one received their initial treatment at our institution. There were 18 males and 18 females and the median age at diagnosis was 35 months. Twenty-two PNETs were lobar, 3 were deep in the hemisphere, and 10 were located in the pineal region. One child presented with intracranial leptomeningeal disseminated disease. The tumors were mostly undifferentiated although 22 had some evidence of differentia

We present a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the left atrium with involvement of the coronary sinus. The initial presentation was of cardiac tamponade resulting from the size of the tumor. There was no evidence of tumor elsewhere, and after complete resection and without adjuvant chemotherapy the patient is well at 2-year follow-up. There has been no evidence of tumor recurrence. This is a rare reported case of resection of a cardiac primitive neuroectodermal tumor without adjuvant chemotherapy. Other cases in the literature have been treated by orthoptic transplantation and resecti

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are malignant proliferations of small, undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells occurring mainly in children and share the same reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 11 and 22 and the same patterns of biochemical and oncogene expression as osseus and extraosseus Ewing's sarcoma. Some PNETs occur in the brain, while others (the peripheral PNETs) occur in sites outside the brain, such as in the extremities, pelvis and the chest wall. They mostly originate in the chest, pelvis and retroperitoneum; in rare cases, occurrence in the head and neck area ha

We report the clinical, histologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings of a Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) localized to the rectum in a 17-year-old boy. Notably the 4.5 x 4 x 4-cm sessile mass was spontaneously eliminated through the anus, producing an episode of hemorrhagic shock. Histologically the tumor presented as a proliferation of membrane CD99-positive, small round cells. EWS/FLI1 chimeric mRNA was demonstrated by nested reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis in the tumor tissue. The patient is alive and well 2 years after

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) without an obvious intraparenchymal mass lesion and with diffuse spread in the subarachnoid space is rare. We report such a rare case and discuss the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) features.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (P-PNET) are extremely rare. They can be easily misdiagnosed as central nervous system primitive neuroectodermal tumors (CNS-PNET) or meningiomas. Little is known about the optimal treatment and prognosis of these tumors.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated the treatment and outcome of 17 patients with intracranial, nonmetastatic, genetically confirmed P-PNET. Three patients were treated at our institutions. Thirteen other cases providing sufficient treatment and follow-up information were extracted from the literature.

PURPOSE: This retrospective review was done to assess the prognosis and response in patients presenting with primitive neuroectodermal tumor admixed with germ cell tumor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of the 40 patients treated at our institution from 1984 to 1999, 15 had initial stage I and 25 had initial metastatic disease. Median followup after the diagnosis was 25 months (range 4 to 142).
RESULTS: Of the 40 patients 15 presented with clinical stage I disease, including 9 treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection and 6 who elected surveillance. Seven of the 9 patients had normal lymph n

Pineal region supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (SPNETs; pineoblastomas) and nonpineal SPNETs are rare tumors that historically have carried a very poor prognosis. With multimodality therapy, including maximal surgical resection, craniospinal radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the survival for patients with pineal PNETs has significantly improved. Chemotherapy alone, at least in conventional doses, appears to be insufficient treatment for younger children with pineoblastomas, in whom there is almost universal rapid tumor progression and death. Survival of patients with nonpineal

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)/Ewing's sarcoma tumors are a group of highly malignant tumors composed of small, round cells showing neuroectodermal differentiation that commonly affects soft tissue and bone. PNET involving the genitourinary system is rare and PNET of the penile urethra is rarer still. It exhibits a highly aggressive biological behavior with poor prognosis. We report a case of a 27-year-old male presenting with penile swelling and difficulty in passing urine. Examination revealed a firm penile urethral mass. Pathological and immunohistochemical results of the specimen o

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) of the central nervous system (CNS) are a heterogeneous group of embryonal malignancies that are composed of undifferentiated or poorly differentiated neuroepithelial cells. Supratentorial PNET is the second most common CNS embryonal malignancy in children, but it is rare in adults. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with bilateral vision loss and a bitemporal hemianopia. Neuroimaging revealed a suprasellar mass, and pathology was consistent with PNET. After surgical debulking of the tumor followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the patien

A 44-year-old man discovered a swollen right testis more than 4 years earlier. He was brought to our hospital because of abdominal pain and vomiting. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a swollen right testis, lung nodules, and swollen retroperitoneal and mediastinal lymph nodes. The swollen lymph nodes compressed the duodenum, causing ileus. HCG, HCG-β, and AFP levels were normal, but the LDH level was high (2,933 IU/L). A diagnosis of testicular cancer with lung and lymph node metastases was made, and a right orchidectomy was performed. However, the pathological diagnosis was unclear, a

UNLABELLED: The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) belongs to a group of highly malignant tumors and is composed of small round cells of a neuroectodermal origin. Categorized in the same tumor family as Ewing sarcoma, the PNET is most likely to occur in bones and soft tissues. However, a small number of PNET cases arising in the pelvis have been reported as well.
WE PRESENT THREE CASES OF PELVIC PNET: two cases in the ovary and one case in the broad ligament. The PNET often exhibits aggressive clinical behavior with worse outcomes than other small round cell tumors. The significant progno

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNET) are an extremely rare disease entity of malignant tumors belonging to the Ewing sarcoma family that usually occur in children and adolescents with a predilection for the truncal and axial soft tissue. Thoracopulmonary manifestation in children mostly involves the chest wall as a large tumorous mass or the posterior mediastinum. In adults these tumors are even more infrequent. We report about a 46-year-old woman with a pPNET of the thymus which infiltrated the pericardium. According to the English literature this is the first reported case bot

We report the case of a 32-year-old female with a diagnosis of supratentorial tumour. Total removal of the tumour was achieved in a two-stage procedure. Histopathology revealed a primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET), an unusual and highly malignant, mainly infratentorial tumour of childhood that is uncommonly described in the supratentorial compartment of adults. We review the literature and describe the existing knowledge of these tumours.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney as a differential diagnosis for Wilms tumor, and to emphasize the severity of the disease. METHODS: We report the case of a patient with a diagnosis of primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney who underwent nephrectomy and complete tumor resection combined with chemotherapy. RESULTS: Initially, the response of the patient to treatment was favorable, with a few events associated with agranulocytosis resulting from the chemotherapy. Ten months after of the end of treatment, the tumor recurred in the paraspinal cervica
