Experimental study of the morphological and electromyographic characteristics of the most frequent iatrogenic lesions of the recurrent laryngeal nerves in thyroid surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Iatrogenic lesions of the recurrent laryngeal nerves remain one of the most severe and frequent complications in thyroid surgery. According to Eisele (Laryngoscope 1996;106:443) their incidence varies between 1% and 12% depending on the size of surgery. AIM: The aim of the study was to examine experimentally the type of neural lesion and the efficiency of stimulation electromyography for immediate evaluation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve function in the most common surgical traumas. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten clinically healthy and parasite-free male dogs of mixed breed weigh

Olfactory neuroblastoma. A case report in an African child.

The case is described of an eight-year-old Nigerian boy who died from olfactory neuroblastoma which presented with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Autopsy showed intracranial extension of the tumour into the frontal lobe, and histology revealed undifferentiated neuroblasts, forming rosettes in some areas and producing tangled neurofibrils in others. The histogenesis of the tumour and its diagnosis are briefly discussed.

Histopathology of eye, optic nerve and brain in a case of dominant optic atrophy.

Histopathology of eye, optic nerve and brain was performed in a patient with typical signs and symptoms of dominant optic atrophy. He belonged to a previously-reported family of 152 members in which optic atrophy was demonstrable in 14 persons, and probably present in a further 8 cases. In the eyes, fibrosis of the retinal ganglion cell layer and disc was found. Ultrastructural examination showed a few remaining cells in this layer, heavy fibrosis and in particular a highly condensed inner limiting membrane. The optic nerves, the optic chiasm and optic tracts showed an increased content of col

Acetylcholinesterase in Hirschsprung's disease.

The association between the congenital absence of colonic ganglion cells and an increased acetylcholinesterase (AChE) expression in the affected tissue is of diagnostic importance in Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR). Investigation of AChE's function in development may also help unravel some of the complex pathophysiology in HSCR. Normal nerves do not stain for AChE, but increased AChE expression is associated with the hypertrophied extrinsic nerve fibres of the aganglionic segment in HSCR. Although a high degree of histochemical diagnostic accuracy exists, results are not always uniform, and fals

Alzheimer's disease: a new evidence for common epitopes between microtubule associated protein Tau and paired helical filaments (PHF): demonstration at the electron microscope level by a double immunogold labelling.

Paired helical filaments (PHF) are neuronal landmarks of Alzheimer's disease. These pathological filaments are antigenically related to proteins present in the normal cytoskeleton, particularly to microtubule associated protein Tau. The evidence for these common epitopes was studied on sections of cortex from Alzheimer brains after Araldite embedding. Two rabbit immune sera were used: one was raised against PHF isolated from Alzheimer cortex; the other against Tau proteins extracted from bovine cortex. The comparison of adjacent semi-thin sections alternatively treated with anti-PHF and anti-T

Morphogenesis of cerebellar lesions in bovine familial convulsions and ataxia.

Cerebellar lesions develop in a heritable disorder characterized by recurrent episodic seizures in newborn and young calves and by ataxia in survivors of several bouts of convulsions. Earliest changes were altered patterns of phosphatase reaction products in Purkinje cells. Purkinje cells axons in the outer half of the granular layer developed fusiform or spheroidal argyrophilic swellings. Early lesions were restricted to the lingula and uvula, but cases with more persistent clinical disease involved other parts of the vermis. In ataxic calves these lesions were also in the cerebellar hemisphe

[Olfactory neuroblastoma: a histopathological ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of 11 cases].

Eleven cases of olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) were studied histopathologically, ultrastructurally and immunohistochemically. Light microscopical examination showed the tumor cell nests separated by fibrous connective tissue (present in 10/11 ONB), Homer-Wright rosette and/or Flexner rosette (9/11 ONB) and acidophilic fibrillary background (8/11 ONB). Ultrastructurally, there were neurosecretory granules (2/2 ONB) and neurofibrils (1/2 ONB) in cytoplasm of tumor cells. A panel of antibodies were used to characterize the immunohistochemical staining profile of ONB. The following results were obt

Fine structural comparison of Ewing's sarcoma with neuroblastoma.

Two cases of Ewing's sarcoma and two neuroblastoma, rosette forming and round cell type, were studied electron microscopically and their fine structures were compared. The neoplastic cells of Ewing's sarcoma were characterized by aggregated glycogen particles in the cytoplasm. They had pseudopod-like cytoplasmic processes having tight junctions, which never contained microtubules or mitochondria. Ewing's sarcoma cells exhibited several stages of cell maturation and some mature cells possessed a large amount of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, large Golgi complexes and numerous phagosome

Prurigo nodularis. Histological and electron microscopical study.

We describe a typical case of prurigo nodularis, of 15 years' duration, in a middle-aged woman. Histological and electron microscopical examination of the skin lesions revealed distinct changes in the nerve tissue. There were groups of thickened nerve fibers that formed nodules with numerous Schwann cells. Some of the nerve bundles extended to the dermoepidermal junction. Electron microscopy showed very obvious lesions in the Schwann cells and axons. In the Schwann cells there was a lucent cytoplasm with few mitochondria, an absence of endoplasmic reticulum and a few irregular, membrane-bound

Pathology of Alzheimer's disease.

The fundamental pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease remains poorly understood, but progress has been dramatic in description of the pathology at the molecular level. The characteristic Alzheimer amyloid derives, in part, by action of microglia, from a precursor protein that is well characterized at the protein and gene levels. The characteristic paired helical filaments contain phosphorylated tau proteins and perhaps other constituents. At the neurotransmitter level, Alzheimer's disease involves not only loss of cholinergic cells but of serotonergic and other neurotransmitter systems as wel

[Presence of neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary changes in the cerebral cortex of an aged lemuride primate].

Some aged Microcebus murinus brains (8 to 11-years old animals) displayed a dramatic atrophy particularly in the neocortex, hippocampus, basal ganglia, hypothalamus, brainstem and cerebellum, associated with a conspicuous increase in the size of the cerebral ventricles. These morphological changes were accompanied by certain histological profiles indicative of pathology. In the cortex, these histological changes consisted of (1) a large number of neuritic plaques formed by degenerated neurites sometimes surrounding an amyloid plaque, (2) dense bundles of argyrophilic filaments in many pyramida

Cognitive disability in alzheimer's disease and its management.

Cognitive disability linked to neurodegenerative diseases and in particular to Alzheimer's disease, remains an increasing cause for concern through a dramatic prevalence increment and associated socio-economic burdens. Initially Alzheimer's disease develops asymptomatically with primary clinical signs, such as memory impairment, decline of spatial and perceptual abilities, occurring at a later stage. This delay implies the possibility of promoting early interventions during the pre-symptomatic stage of the disease. Different strategies have been applied in order to prevent/delay onset of Alzhe

Sulfated glycosaminoglycans in Alzheimer's disease.

Using the sulfated alcian blue and alcian blue-MgCl2 techniques for demonstrating sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), we have shown sulfated GAGs to be associated with the amyloidotic lesions of Alzheimer's disease, the neuritic plaques, the neurofibrillary tangle, and the congophilic angiopathy. To determine how specific these findings are to Alzheimer's disease, other neurologic disorders with neurofibrillary tangles and filamentous inclusions were examined. These included progressive supranuclear palsy, Pick's disease, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and postencephalitic parkinsonism.

Paragangliomas of the head and neck: ultrastructural and immunohistochemical analysis.

Eighteen head and neck paragangliomas were studied by light microscopy and light microscopic immunohistochemistry by the peroxidase technique for the presence of NSE (neuron-specific enolase), serotonin, and a battery of neuropeptides. Seven of these tumors were also studied by electron microscopy. All 18 cases demonstrated immunostaining for NSE; 10 of the 11 carotid body tumors had immunostaining for multiple hormones. Considering all 18 cases, the most frequently demonstrated hormonal substances were in order: serotonin, leu-enkephalin, gastrin, substance P, vasoactive intestinal polypeptid

[Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Evaluation of senile plaques of the diffuse type].

The different types of plaques throughout the thickness of the pole of the temporal lobule of brains from autopsies of a patient with Alzheimer's disease and two elderly patients with normal cognitive function were quantified. Thioflavin-S techniques and cholinesterase marking indicating amyloid aggregates were employed. If the Khachaturian criteria had been followed one of the controls would have also been diagnosed with involvement of Alzheimer's disease. The aforementioned control and patients with Alzheimer's disease had numerous senile plaques, most of which were diffuse, however, only th
