The spinal column has been considered ideal for guided surgery due to its stable anatomical structure and notable reference points which are perfectly distinguishable both in computer tomography (C.T.) images and in the surgical field. Our main objective was to apply this technique to the conventional transpedicular fusion surgery. During the last year (1999), 13 males and 26 females, with an average of 47.1, + 14.1 years were operated because of degenerative discopathy (9 cases) degenerative discopathy associated to listhesis (7 cases) and spinal canal stenosis (8 cases). All of them were ope

The authors present the results of neuronavigation as a help to open neurosurgery for the tumors of the third ventricle. From January, 1995 to August, 1999, six image-guided surgical procedures were performed to remove third ventricle lesions : 4 colloïd cysts, 1 ependymoma, and 1 craniopharyngioma. The operative approach was transcortical in 5 cases, and transcallosal in 1 case. The use of neuronavigation allows a decrease of the surgical trauma during the surgical approach. The procedure secures the neurosurgeon in the choice and execution of his pathway to the target. It becomes however les

OBJECTIVE: Computer-assisted neuronavigation was used in 87 cases of skull base lesions (SBLs). Preoperative planning and intraoperative identification of anatomic landmarks is especially important in SBLs since it helps to avoid or minimize surgical morbidity and mortality. In this study, we assessed the accuracy and the clinical usefulness of a frameless system based on the optical digitizer in SBLs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between April 2000 and March 2003, eighty-seven patients with SBLs were operated on in our department using cranial neuronavigation. A passive-marker-based neuronavigation

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a four-week course of neuronavigated intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is superior to the non-neuronavigated F3-EEG method of positioning.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center, two-arm, randomized and double-blinded study (clinicaltrials.gov NCT03953521). 37 inpatients with an at least moderate depressive episode were randomized to receive either neuronavigated or 10-20-EEG-system based F3 guided iTBS. Both groups received twenty week daily sessions of iTBS while continuing to receive standard-of-care trea

OBJECT: Parallel advancements in image guidance technology and minimal access techniques continue to push the frontiers of minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). While traditional intraoperative imaging remains widely used, newer platforms, such as 3D-fluoroscopy, cone-beam CT, and intraoperative CT/MRI, have enabled safer, more accurate instrumentation placement with less radiation exposure to the surgeon. The goal of this work is to provide a review of the current uses of advanced image guidance in MISS.
METHODS: The authors searched PubMed for relevant articles concerning MISS, with part

Smaller operative exposures associated with suturectomy for craniosynostosis may result in difficulties visualizing the prematurely fused suture during surgery. The authors report cases of suturectomy for lambdoid and metopic craniosynostosis in which neuronavigation or frameless stereotaxy was used to assist with incision planning and intraoperative localization of the fused suture. In both cases, neuronavigation integrated easily and safely into established workflows and was associated with complete suture release. To our knowledge, this is the first report of applying this noninvasive techn

Neuronavigation (computer-aided surgery planning and performance) has proven to be helpful in performing neurosurgical operations. The experiences of our department gained on more than 500 patients operated upon will be presented, with special focus on more than 100 operations for lesions on the skull base. Navigation is one of several modern surgical tools, its value cannot be defined without observing other improvements e.g. in the area of preoperative diagnostics, intraoperative monitoring, microsurgical instruments and microsurgical approaches.

Application of a novel technique is analyzed. Frameless CT-based navigation was applied for planning of surgical approach in 92 patients aged 14 to 69 with acute intracranial hemorrhage of different etiology (43 cases of hypertensive hemorrhages, 10 cases of traumatic intracranial hematomas and 16 cases of secondary non-traumatic intracerebral hematomas). Comparative analysis of radioopaque markers and natural anatomical landmarks for registration of patients showed that anatomical landmarks are sufficient for surgical planning without significant distortion of approach trajectory (mean error

In occlusive hydrocephalus, cysts and some ventricular tumours, neuroendoscopy has replaced shunt operations and microsurgery. There is an ongoing discussion if neuronavigation should routinely accompany neuroendoscopy or if its use should be limited to selected cases. In this prospective clinical series, the role of neuronavigation during intracranial endoscopic procedures was investigated. In 126 consecutive endoscopic procedures (endoscopic third ventriculostomy, ETV, n = 65; tumour biopsy/resection, n = 36; non-tumourous cyst fenestration, n = 23; abscess aspiration and hematoma removal, n

Intracranial endoscopy as minimal invasive surgery for the treatment of hydrocephalus and intracranial cysts cannot be disregarded after 10 years of clinical practicing. The advantages are low traumatization of brain tissue and good visual control of the operation field. Neuronavigation qualifies as a method of increased operation safety for lesions which are deep seated or difficult to access. A combination of both systems partially neutralizes the respective disadvantages. On the one hand, the neuronavigation ensures the endoscopic approach up to the intracranial caverns and especially suppo

The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) has been assumed to be involved in the genesis of several types of facial pain, including Sluder's neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, persistent idiopathic facial pain, cluster headache, and atypical facial pain. The gold standard treatments for SPG-related pain are percutaneous procedures performed with the aid of fluoroscopy or CT. In this technical note the authors present, for the first time, an SPG approach using the aid of a neuronavigator.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) involves positioning two electrodes at specifically targeted locations on the human scalp. In neuropsychiatric research, the anode is often placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), while the cathode is positioned over a contralateral cephalic region above the eye, referred-to as the supraorbital region. Although the 10-20 EEG system is frequently used to locate the DLPFC, due to inter-subject brain variability, this method may lack accuracy. Therefore, we compared in forty participants left DLPFC-localization via the 10-20 EEG

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous thoracic pedicle screw fixation is challenging because of the complexity of the spinal anatomy and obscuration of normal surgical landmarks by soft tissue. We report a novel percutaneous technique in which intraoperative Iso-C C-arm navigation was used to treat complex thoracic spinal fractures.
METHODS: Between March and September 2007, percutaneous thoracic pedicle screw fixation was performed with the assistance of intraoperative Iso-C C-arm fluoroscopy in six patients (two males, four females; mean age=33 years, range=16-61 years) with unstable thoracic fractures.

BACKGROUND: Microsurgery is a common treatment of brainstem tumors. However, misdirection, vascular damage, nerves injuries, paralysis, even death are all well-known complications, and the risk of adverse events is more likely in less experienced operators. This study was aimed to validate the accuracy of multimodal neuronavigation during microsurgery resection of brainstem tumors.
METHODS: Ten patients with brainstem tumors underwent preoperative MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, computed tomography, three-dimensional print, and images loaded into the neuronavigation platform were used for its

INTRODUCTION: Neuronavigation has become a cornerstone of neurosurgery. Navigation systems are categorized into two main groups: those based on preoperative imaging and those based on real-time intraoperative acquired images.
OBJECTIVES: The preoperative imaging systems, either computed tomography (CT)- or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based, are straight-forward systems that are routinely used in most institutions. Image accuracy, however, decreases secondary to brain and lesion shifts that occur during surgery. Intraoperative, real-time navigation systems overcome anatomical shifts by up

In the reconstruction of asymmetrical deformities of the facial skeleton, both an endoscope and a neuronavigator have been used. The endoscope allows the surgeon a wide view of the object on a television monitor, reduces the scarring, minimizes the undermined field, and reduces the need to work blind. The neuronavigator is a frameless computed tomographic stereotactic device that has been mainly used in neurosurgery. The device is easy to use and can offer the surgeon three-dimensional coordinates of the status during the operation. We have used this new technique in three clinical cases, two

OBJECTIVE: NeuroNavigation (NN) is a widely used intraoperative imaging guidance technique in neurosurgical operations; however, its value in brainstem glioma (BSG) surgery is inadequately reported and lacks objective proof. This study aims to investigate the applicational value of NN in BSG surgery.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed on 155 patients with brainstem gliomas who received craniotomy from May 2019 to January 2022 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital. Eighty-four (54.2%) patients received surgery with NN. Preoperative and postoperative cranial nerve dysfunctions, muscle strengt
