The nature of the relation between neuropsychology and consciousness has become a major issue. DB had a left lower quadrant hemianopia. When questioned about his vision in the left lower field, DB reported that he saw nothing. When DB was asked to point to locations in the impaired field in which spots of light were turned on briefly, he was surprisingly accurate. Apparently, even though DB could not consciously perceive a light in his blind region, his brain knew where it had appeared. This phenomenon has become known as blindsight. DF suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. The result in DF was

The year 1996 marked the quattrocentenary of Descartes' birth. This paper reviews his pineal neuropsychology. It demonstrates that Descartes understood the true anatomical position of the pineal. His intraventricular pineal (or glande H) was a theoretical construct which allowed him to describe the operations of his man-like "earthen machine." In the Treatise of Man he shows how all the behaviors of such machines could then be accounted for without the presence of self-consciousness. Infrahuman animals are "conscious automata." In Passions of the Soul he adds, but only for humans, self-conscio

The purpose of this study was to investigate sociodemographic characteristics, clinical and academic training, and the types of activities engaged in by practicing psychologists specialized in neuropsychology in France. A total of 804 French psychologists specializing in neuropsychology participated in an online-based survey: 90.2% of the participants were women, with a mean age of 32 (range 22-60). In the total sample, 54.2% of the participants worked in the hospital system, 38.2% in the private sector, and 24.9% had a private practice job; and 97.3% engage in evaluation, 74% in rehabilitatio

As cognitive dysfunction is the core symptom of dementia, the assessment of it is essential for the clinical practice. The role of "neuropsychology" is none other than analysis and interpretation of the central symptoms of brain damaged including dementing illnesses. "Neuropsychology" in this sense does not refer only to the neuropsychological tests that psychologists employ, but certainly implies mental status examination as a part of the neurological examination, which enables us to make focal diagnosis and differential diagnosis, to evaluate the disability, to predict the problems in living

Childhood autism is a syndrome characterized by a triad of abnormalities in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and imaginative activity. It is clinically heterogeneous, however, and probably represents a family of syndromes, each of which is the result of a different but related type of brain dysfunction. So far, there is no direct evidence for involvement of particular brain systems, although analogies to other disorders in humans and experimental animals do allow some plausible hypotheses.

Bipolar disorder is associated with significant dysfunction in a broad range of neuropsychological domains and processes. Deficits have been reported to occur in symptomatic states (depression, [hypo]mania) as well as in remission (euthymia), having consequences for psychological well-being and social and occupational functioning. The profile and magnitude of neuropsychological deficits in bipolar disorder have been explored in a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. After discussing these briefly, this chapter will focus on examining the clinical and demographic factors that influen

The presence of histopathological lesions characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, senile plaques and neurofibrillar degeneration in the brains of cognitively normal individuals has been well documented in several longitudinal clinicopathological studies over the last two decades. Clinical and pathological epidemiological data suggest that Alzheimer's disease can begin to develop almost a decade before the first clinical manifestations appear. The present article reviews the studies investigating cognitive alterations before the disease manifests. All these studies reveal the presence of alterat

Neuropsychology includes both the psychiatric manifestations of neurological illness (primary brain-based disorders) and neurobiology of "idiopathic" psychiatric disorders. Neurological primary brain disorders provoke broad spectrum of brain pathophysiology that cause deficit sin human behaviour, and the magnitude of neurobehavioral-related problems is a world wide health concern. Speech disorders of aphasic type, unilateral neglect, anosognosia (deficit disorders), delirium and mood disorders (productive disorders) in urgent neurology, first of all in acute phase of stroke are more frequent d

The main manifestation of Korsakoff's syndrome is a disproportionate impairment in memory in comparison to other cognitive functions. Most prominent is anterograde amnesia for both verbal and nonverbal information. The marked sensitivity to interference is the main characteristic of memory impairment of these patients. Retrograde amnesia is also a typical feature of this disorder. Memory for autobiographical information as well as knowledge of public events and facts are affected and they have a temporal gradient. Confabulations may also occur but they are not specific to Korsakoff's syndrome.

The pathophysiology of trichotillomania (TM) is not well understood. Overlap with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has been proposed, although extant data are inconsistent in this regard. In the neuropsychological domain, some data have supported the proposed TM-OCD overlap. However, the available studies are limited in number, and they typically have sampled a restricted range of performance domains. To examine further neuropsychological functioning in TM, the present study compared performance of 21 patients with TM and 17 normal control (NC) participants on a broad battery of tests asses

Cases of thallium poisoning are rare and neuropsychological assessment has only been reported in detail in one other case. In the case reported here, neuropsychological assessments were carried out three, 12, and 54 months after diagnosis of thallium poisoning in a man who had acutely shown a number of neurological signs including confusion and disorientation and generalised slowing of EEG which was more prominent on the left. Evidence suggested that he had been exposed to thallium over a period of weeks. Neuropsychological assessment indicated an unexpected weakness in verbal abilities which

Cognitive neuroscientists in the late 20th century began the task of identifying the part(s) of the brain concerned with normal behavior as manifest in the psychological capacities as affective powers, reasoning, behaving purposively and the pursuit of goals, following introduction of the 'functional magnetic resonance imaging' (fMRI) method for identifying brain activity. For this research program to be successful two questions require satisfactory answers. First, as the fMRI method can currently only be used on stationary subjects, to what extent can neuropsychological tests applicable to su

The expression of neurodegenerative diseases can be categorized into three main symptomatic domains: neurological, cognitive and, neuropsychiatric. This review focuses on the cognitive profile and neuropsychological assessment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The topography and progression of brain neuropathology determines the cognitive expression of the disease. Thus, in accordance with the initial involvement of the medial temporal lobe, cognitive changes in AD start with specific difficulties in encoding and storage of new information. This particular memory deficit can be optimally detected w

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive performance in cerebral palsy (CP) varies between being completely normal and severe mental retardation. This heterogeneity depends on several factors, including the type of paralysis and associated cerebral lesions.
DEVELOPMENT: We review neuropsychological studies with reference to general cognitive performance and specific performance (language, memory, attention and visuospatial functions). We also consider studies relating neuroimaging and neuropsychology in the different types of CP.
CONCLUSIONS: Language is one of the best preserved functions studied in CP, apa

The study of senile plaque dementias and neurofibrillary degenerations, represented by Alzheimer's disease, presbyophrenia, simple senile dementia, and senile dementia of the Alzheimer type, enables, by means of its specificity, a privileged method of approach to be taken in the comprehension of cerebral mechanisms, with a resulting different conception of neuropsychology. That which is described in this paper has evolved from the application of Genetic Psychology methods developed by J. Piaget. It demonstrates the value of a synchronic qualitative analysis of dementia, even for determination

Adult hydrocephalus is a heterogeneous disorder with variable cognitive impairments among 4 subtypes: idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH), secondary hydrocephalus, unidentified congenital hydrocephalus, and transitional hydrocephalus. INPH is the most widely studied and presents with frontal subcortical dysfunction affecting psychomotor speed, information processing, executive skills, attention, and memory, ranging from mild to dementia-like impairments. Detailed neuropsychological evaluations are essential for diagnosis, assessing baseline impairment, and monitoring treatment resp
