Schistosomiasis is an infection caused by digenetic trematode platyhelminths of the genus Schistosoma. These blood flukes use man and other mammals as definitive hosts and aquatic and amphibious snails as intermediate hosts. Of the schistosomal species, S. mansoni, S haematobium and S. japonicum are the most important to man and the most widely distributed. The infection affects about 200 million individuals in 74 countries of Latin America, Africa and Asia. Far less commonly, schistosomes reach the central nervous system (CNS). This may occur at any time from the moment the worms have matured

The low incidence of mansoni schistosomiasis involving the nervous system calls our attention in a country where 12 million people carry the intestinal form of the disease. Also, during autopsies the incidence of the parasites eggs occurs three to four times more often than the cases diagnosed in life. Therefore, new investigations become necessary around endemic areas. The cerebrospinal fluid syndrome of the neuroschistosomiasis must be searched among patients from endemic areas who present neurological symptoms and which cause is unknown. The probable protein liberation giving signs in the C

Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is a neglected tropical disease caused by digenetic trematode platyhelminths of the genus Schistosoma. Neuroschistosomiasis is one of the most severe clinical outcomes associated with schistosome infection. Neurological complications early during the course of infection are thought to occur through in situ egg deposition following aberrant migration of adult worms to the brain or spinal cord. The presence of eggs in the CNS induces a cell-mediated Th2-driven periovular granulomatous reaction. The mass effect of thousands of eggs and the large granulomas concentrated

Neuroschistosomiasis, the infection of the CNS by Schistosoma spp., is a neglected and under-recognized complication of schistosomiasis. Cerebral and spinal neuroschistosomiasis can provoke severe disability. Neurological symptoms occur as a consequence of the immune reaction around the eggs deposited in the CNS. Cerebral neuroschistosomiasis may present with altered sensorium, headache, seizures and focal neurological deficit. Pseudotumoral and cerebellar neuroschistosomiasis may provoke intracranial hypertension and hydrocephalus. Brain-enhancing lesions with associated mass effect can be ob

We report a 20-year-old woman with a diagnosis of spinal neuroschistosomiasis that was confirmed histologically. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an expanded, oedematous conus with intrinsic heterogeneous enhancement, which was initially thought to be a neoplastic lesion. This case demonstrates an alternative diagnosis to oncological lesions of the spinal cord which should be considered in patients who have recently travelled to endemic areas.

Mansonic neuroschistosomiasis (MN) is not only the most common but also the most serious ectopic presentation of the infection by Schistosoma mansoni. Both, brain and spinal cord can be independently affected by the infection, but the later is more frequently affected. Brain MN by itself is due to the presence of eggs and/or adult worms in situ and can be symptomatic or asymptomatic. Unlike the brain MN, spinal cord mansonic neuroschistosomiasis is more frequently symptomatic. In both forms the intensity, the seriousness and also the clinical characteristics of signs and symptoms depend on the

INTRODUCTION: Neuroschistosomiasis is an uncommon and under diagnosed disease in our country because of the no clinical suspicion. The most common neurological manifestations are epileptic seizures as central nervous system involvement or different types of myelopathies: transverse myelitis, myeloradiculopathy, cauda equina syndrome or Brown-Sequard syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 27 years-old male from an endemic area, with atypical neurological affectation as he presented myelopathy and multifocal neuritis. Diagnosis was based on the epidemiological exposure datums, the myelopathy, the positive se

OBJECTIVE: To provide a general description of the studies on spinal cord schistosomiasis that our team has developed in Brazil, with an emphasis on how we have planned the investigations and managed the problems.
METHODS: Schistosoma mansoni is endemic in extensive areas in Brazil. We review the subject and discuss the design, development and initial evaluation of a diagnostic cerebrospinal fluid enzyme-linked immunoassay test for spinal cord schistosomiasis.
RESULTS: Since the late 1980s, several clinical investigations have led to a better understanding of the natural history of this diso

BACKGROUND: Neuroschistosomiasis is a severe complication of an infection with Schistosoma; this infection can lead to myelitis transversa. Acute myelitis transversa is a rare disorder of the spinal cord, which can present with muscular weakness, sensory disturbance and intestinal or bladder dysfunction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old refugee from Eritrea, who had been in the Netherlands for 3 weeks, suffered from back pain and progressive weakness of both legs for one week. Both the clinical presentation and the MRI images were consistent with myelitis transversa. Schistosomamansoni eggs we

Neuroschistosomiasis, referring to schistosomal involvement of the CNS, when symptomatic, is a severe disorder in which prognosis depends largely on early diagnosis and treatment. It is an underdiagnosed disorder, but has been increasingly reported in populations in endemic areas and in tourists. CNS involvement can occur at any time during schistosomal infection. Both the brain and the spinal cord can be affected. Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium usually cause myelopathy, whereas Schistosoma japonicum usually causes encephalic disease. There are substantial differences in the p

A study was made of 220 samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients who suffered from several diseases of the central nervous system. In all samples immunological reactions for syphilis, cysticercosis, toxoplasmosis, Chagas' disease and schistosomiasis were studied comparatively. Immunofluorescent reactions for schistosomiasis were made by indirect antiglobulin technic with two types of antigen: the worm and the liver granuloma of hamster infected by Schistosoma mansoni. Emphasis is given on data concerning to 16 cases in which these reactions were reagent. The importance of routine sea

There is increasing evidence that various in vitro and in vivo models of neuroschistosomiasis may be useful to study its pathophysiology, the clinical manifestations of the infection, and its effects on cerebral and spinal structures as well as the immune system. The use of animal models to study neuroschistosomiasis began in 1996 with the CD1 mice, followed by studies in Swiss mice, BALB/C mice, C57 mice, New Zealand rabbits, and Wistar rats. These animal models make it possible to study factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, its infectivity, and possible treatment effects. How

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a tropical disease caused by worms of the genus Schistosoma. It is endemic in the Caribbean Islands, the middle east, eastern Asia, South America, and Africa. In nonendemic areas, physicians should be aware of this condition in travelers returning from endemic areas and in immigrants. The main disease-causing species are Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni, and Schistosoma japonicum. Neuroschistosomiasis is an ectopic form of the disease that is mainly associated with S. japonicum infection. Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in S. mansoni i

Spinal cord involvement is a rare complication of the schistosomiasis manifesting as myeloradiculopathy, medullary or conus-cauda equina syndrome which can lead to potentially serious long-term disability. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging coupled with biochemical parameters have become the mainstay of diagnosis. Biopsy which is the gold standard of diagnosis demonstrating the organism is usually reserved for cases of diagnostic challenge. We report a rare case of upper thoracic spinal cord schistosomiasis diagnosed by biopsy in an 18-year-old male migrant presenting to a spin

Schistosomiasis is an endemic parasitic disease in several tropical countries. In Brazil, the only prevalent species of parasite responsible for schistosomiasis is Schistosoma mansoni. Neuroschistosomiasis is the second most frequent form of infection and the primary ectopic manifestation, with predominant involvement of the lower thoracic spinal cord and lumbar and lumbosacral regions. The frequent contact of children with contaminated ponds and the immaturity of their immune systems make this age group especially susceptible to infection by this parasite. Therefore, neuroschistosomiasis mans

The infection of the central nervous system (CNS) by schistosome may or may not have clinical manifestations. When symptomatic, neuroschistosomiasis (NS) is one of the most severe presentations of schistosome infection. Among the NS symptoms, cerebral invasion is mostly caused by Schistosoma japonicum (S. japonicum), and the spinal cord symptoms are mainly caused by S. mansoni or S. haematobium. There are 2 main pathways by which schistosomes cause NS: egg embolism and worm migration, via either artery or vein system, especially the valveless perivertebral Batson's plexus. The adult worm migra

Schistosomatidae is a family of trematodes that generally have an indirect life cycle, with snails as intermediate hosts in avian schistosomiasis and aquatic birds as definitive hosts. Although multiple studies report avian schistosomes, there are only a few reports describing gross and histological lesions of neuroschistosomiasis in aquatic birds. Herein, a retrospective study including 12 aquatic birds with neuroschistosomiasis was conducted to further characterize the clinical, gross, and histologic findings and to identify the trematodes. The median age of birds was 12 years, and schistoso
