Women in the neurosciences.

The term 'scientist' was coined to describe Mary Somerville (1780-1872) as her contributions to astronomy commanded recognition of her excellence in science. Up to then, the term 'man of science' had been in use. In fields traditionally considered the province of males, the entry of women was viewed with consternation, apprehension and alarm. Resistance was instinctive in most leading scientists. This attitude was strengthened by illogical and pseudoscientific statements on the frailty of women. The pioneers blazing trails in medicine for their sisters to follow braved ridicule, hostility, and

Studies of caloric vestibular stimulation: implications for the cognitive neurosciences, the clinical neurosciences and neurophilosophy.

OBJECTIVE: Caloric vestibular stimulation (CVS) has traditionally been used as a tool for neurological diagnosis. More recently, however, it has been applied to a range of phenomena within the cognitive neurosciences. Here, we provide an overview of such studies and review our work using CVS to investigate the neural mechanisms of a visual phenomenon - binocular rivalry. We outline the interhemispheric switch model of rivalry supported by this work and its extension to a metarivalry model of interocular-grouping phenomena. In addition, studies showing a slow rate of binocular rivalry in bipola

Domenico Cotugno, a pioneer in neurosciences.

Dominico Cotugno was born in Ruvo Pugliese on January 29, 1736. In 1756, he graduated in Medicine from the Medical School in Salerno. In 1761, Cotugno published the "Aquaeductibus auris humanae internae anatomica dissertatio" ("Anatomical dissertation on acqueducts of the human inner ear") in which he provided the first detailed description of aqueducts of the vestibule and cochlea and formulated the theory of resonance subsequently resumed by Helmholtz. Cotugno gave also the first description of the naso-palatine nerve and of its role in sneezing. In 1764, he published "Commentarius de ischia

Imaging of receptors in clinical neurosciences.

This article deals with the question why should one determine receptors in the brain with positron and single photon emission tomography (PET and SPECT, respectively). Radiopharmaceuticals for a wide variety of receptors are available now. Receptors studies with PET and SPECT have thus far focused on the following issues: occupancy during drug treatment, quantification in neuropsychiatric diseases and visualizing specific pathology. Far most studies on receptor occupancy are concerned with antipsychotic treatment in schizophrenic patients. During treatment with classical antipsychotic drugs mo

Neurosciences research in space: future directions.

Future research in the neurosciences can best be understood in the context of NASA's life sciences goals in the near term (1990-95), mid term (1995-2000), and long term (2000 and beyond). Since NASA is planning short-duration Spacelab and International Microgravity Laboratory (IML) flights for many years to come, the acute effects of exposure to microgravity will continue to be of experimental and operational interest in the near term. To this end, major new areas of research will be devoted to ground-based studies of preflight adaptation trainers and their efficacy in preventing or reducing t

Neuroscience in pictures: Neuroscience of fear.

Fear is an evolutionarily adaptive mechanism that enables organisms to detect and respond to potential threats. Over the past century, theories of fear have evolved from Pavlovian and behavioral frameworks to neuroscientific models that emphasize specific neural circuits, neurotransmission, and plasticity. This pictorial review synthesizes key concepts underlying the neuroscience of fear, starting with a historical narrative of fear as conceptualized by conditioning and behaviorism theories, to the roles of different neurobiology structures, networks, to concepts of memory consolidation, recon

A short history of neurosciences in Austria.

Based on internal medicine and psychiatry and in close connection with pathology, the neurosciences in Austria began to develop in the 18(th) century, e.g. with the description of inflammation of the central nervous system by J. P. Franck (1745-1823) and the "phrenology" by F. J. Gall (1745-1823). Under the influence of the great pathologist C. Rokitansky (1804-1878), the tripode of the Vienna neurology - L. Türck (1810-1868), as initiator, Th. v. Meynert (1833-1892) the activator, and H. Obersteiner (1847-1922) as the founder of the Vienna Neurological Institute, presented basic contributions

[The occupational risk in IRCCS of Neurosciences].

The results of meta-analysis carried out on all documents for the valuation of the risk, recorded by IRCCS of Neuroscience, has led to identify a risk matrix for the medical personnel of the Scientific Institute of Neuroscience. Such analysis allowed to tackle the day to day risk faced by hospital staff. As a general rule the IRCCS of Neurosciences distinguishes themselves as structures of mainly neurologic typology and as structures of more typical psychiatric interest. In the first case the analogy with the traditional Hospital structures are more noticeable, in the second case instead the k

[History from neuropsychology to cognitive neurosciences in Argentina].

The first step from the neuropsychology in Argentina was in 1883 with the thesis of Antonio Piñeiro about the brain localization of the language and vision disorders, only few years after Broca. The aim of this work has been to describe the development of the neuropsychology in Argentina and its relation with the psychology, neurology and psychiatry. The first period was into the neurology with its French school in?uence. In 1907, Jose Ingeniero published in French his book about "amusia", Cristofredo Jakob the "folia neurobiologica" where he described the organization of the human brain, Vice

History of instruments and technology in the clinical neurosciences: 1. A new column for Journal of the History of the Neurosciences.

Journal of the History of the Neurosciences is inaugurating a new column titled, "History of Instruments and Technology in the Clinical Neurosciences," especially involving the diagnosis or therapy of neurologic diseases to the mid-twentieth century. Except for neurosurgical instruments, which date from antiquity, and the ophthalmoscope (invented in 1851), most neurological instruments were developed after 1860. Although physicians were reluctant to consider themselves as technicians, by the late-nineteenth century, physicians no longer practiced without special facilities and apparatus. Neuro

Neuroscience for All: Sharing Neuroscience with Your Community.

Science communication plays an essential role in bridging the gap between researchers and the general public. Now, more than ever, it is essential for neuroscientists to interact with their communities to increase understanding of basic neuroscience concepts and enhance trust in academic scientists as members of the community. However, it can be difficult, as scientists, to develop and maintain effective lines of communication with the public. To address this, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we have been organizing public outreach events aimed to educate the public about various as

Although psychopathy has traditionally been cited as a disorder of personality, confusion arises as the term is used interchangeably with the terms antisocial personality disorder of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV TR) or dissocial personality disorder, both of which are largely behaviorally based. This paper aims to provide a clinical and scientific overview of the literature on the topic of psychopathy, which examines this conundrum. This article begins with a wee bit of history about Hervey Cleckley's work, The Mask of Sanity,

Progress in clinical neurosciences: sepsis-associated encephalopathy: evolving concepts.

Systemic sepsis commonly produces brain dysfunction, sepsis-associated encephalopathy, which can vary from a transient, reversible encephalopathy to irreversible brain damage. The encephalopathy in the acute phase clinically resembles many metabolic encephalopathies: a diffuse disturbance in cerebral function with sparing of the brain stem. The severity of the encephalopathy, as reflected in progressive EEG abnormalities, often precedes then parallels dysfunction in other organs. Recent research has revealed a number of potentially important, non-mutually exclusive, mechanisms that have therap

Focus on: Neuroscience and treatment: the potential of neuroscience to inform treatment.

In the 40 years since the founding of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), researchers have gained a better understanding of the brain circuits and brain chemical (i.e., neurotransmitter) systems involved in the development and maintenance of alcoholism and other drug dependence. This understanding has led to the identification of numerous potential targets for pharmacotherapy of addiction. For example, insight into the roles of signaling molecules called endogenous opioids and the neurotransmitter glutamate were fundamental for developing two medications--naltrexone

Neuroscience of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a consequence of changes in auditory and nonauditory neural networks following damage to the cochlea. Homeostatic compensatory mechanisms occur after hearing loss and these mechanisms alter the balance of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. In many individuals with hearing loss, chronic tinnitus and related phenomena emerge. Some people with tinnitus are disturbed by this subjective sensation. When auditory network dysfunction is coupled with limbic-gating dysfunction, an otherwise meaningless auditory percept such as tinnitus may acquire negative emotional features. The d
