METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was performed in the tertiary care hospital that receives all referrals for coronary angiography and coronary artery revascularization for Newfoundland and Labrador. First case report of disseminated gonococcal arthritis in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Introduction. Disseminated gonococcal infections (DGIs) are a rare but often debilitating complication of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections. Often presenting as arthritis-dermatitis syndrome, true suppurative joint infections are an even more rare form of DGI. Here, we present the first known case of DGI in Newfoundland and Labrador in over 10 years. Case report. A 50-year-old man who is known to inject drugs with multiple housing and social challenges presented to the emergency department with a 2-day history of an isolated, painful, erythematous knee. After being assessed by orthopaedics and

Chronic ear disease along the coasts of Labrador and Northern Newfoundland.

The high incidence of chronic ear disease among the three ethnic groups, Eskimo, Algonkian Indians, and Caucasians living under the same environmental conditions is studied. The role of socio-economic factors in the incidence and sequelae of ear disease in this population was similar to other studies among the native peoples of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The variation in the disease pattern in the different ethnic groups was shown to be related to the aeration of the middle ear cleft. The air cell system of the mastoid is determined by x-rays and/or surgical exploration, but the patency of

Lack of evidence of hepatitis D (delta) infection in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Epidemiologic knowledge of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is limited. A seroepidemiologic study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the infection in Newfoundland and Labrador. Between October 1983 and October 1985 over 200 people were recognized through routine serodiagnosis and screening as having hepatitis B seromarkers. A total of 223 serum samples from 186 of these people were tested for anti-HDV. The subjects were mainly asymptomatic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen or patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B from the native Indian and Inuit and the non-native popula

Prevalence of amblyopia and other vision disorders in young Newfoundland and Labrador children.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a lack of adequate data on pediatric eye and vision disorders in Canada, particularly in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the present study, we estimate the prevalence of eye and vision disorders among young children who participated in a vision screening program in the St. John's, Newfoundland, metropolitan region. METHODS: In daycare settings, 946 children (mean age 4.2 years) were screened with the latest tests of optics and functional vision. Those with suspected vision disorders were referred to an optometrist for a complete eye examination. F

Evaluating the hepatitis C care cascade in Newfoundland and Labrador: Progress toward elimination.

BACKGROUND: Care cascades are useful tools for tracking progress toward public health goals, including the World Health Organization's target of hepatitis C elimination by 2030. This study outlines the hepatitis C care cascade in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) from 2018 to 2024 and assesses trends in access to testing and treatment. METHODS: Provincial administrative health data on hepatitis C testing and treatment dispensing were analyzed. We calculated descriptive statistics for the full study period and compared two time intervals, with additional year-by-year analyses to examine trends.

Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a coyote (Canis latrans) from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Tissue samples and feces were collected from a dead, adult female coyote (Canis latrans) found at the side of the road in late March 2003 in the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland, Canada. The coyote apparently died of vehicular-related trauma. Samples of lung, brain, heart, liver, and kidney were fixed in formalin and submitted for histologic examination. The entire remaining lung and heart also were submitted for examination. The coyote was diagnosed with moderate, multifocal, granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with eosinophilic vasculitis and many intralesional nematode eggs, larvae,

Arsenic Keratosis in a Patient from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada: Case Report and Review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Millions of people worldwide suffer from chronic arsenic poisoning due to contaminated drinking water. The devastating effects of chronic arsenic ingestion are multisystem, but depending on the dose and frequency of exposure, may take many years to become clinically apparent. The earliest and most common manifestations are dermatological, and therefore, recognition of hallmark lesions is key. In this report, we describe a suspected case of palmoplantar arsenical keratosis in a patient from Newfoundland, Canada. METHODS: Case report and review of relevant literature v

Prevalence of Trichinella spiralis in black bears (Ursus americanus) from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Tongue and diaphragm samples from 158 black bears (Ursus americanus) from Newfoundland and Labrador were examined for Trichinella spiralis. No larvae were detected in samples from the island of Newfoundland but one animal from the Labrador samples was infected. The results of this and other studies suggest a lack of involvement of the black bear in a sylvatic cycle of T. spiralis in eastern Canada.

Suicide in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada: a time trend analysis from 1981 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: The suicide rate in Canada decreased by 24% during the past four decades. However, rates vary between provinces and territories, and not all jurisdictions experienced the same changes. This study examined suicide rates over time in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. METHODS: We used cross-sectional surveillance data from the Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database to examine suicide rates in Newfoundland and Labrador from 1981 to 2018. We calculated annual age-standardized suicide mortality rates and used joinpoint regression to estimate the average annual percent change

Pathological findings in dogs naturally infected with Angiostrongylus vasorum in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Fifty-six dogs from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, were evaluated for Angiostrongylus vasorum infection. Small numbers of nematodes were found within pulmonary arteries of 6 dogs. Larvae were identified in fecal samples in 2 of 6 dogs. All 6 dogs had multifocal granulomatous pneumonia and sometimes foci of chronic thrombosis, which varied from very mild to severe. One dog had extensive pulmonary lesions resulting in cor pulmonale. Right heart failure was characterized by right ventricular hypertrophy, hepatic congestion, ascites, and hydrothorax. Microscopically, in most cases, eggs, larvae
