Night eating syndrome in patients with eating disorders: Is night eating syndrome distinct from bulimia nervosa?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Night eating syndrome (NES) is a diagnosis newly introduced in the fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This study investigated the characteristics of NES in individuals with eating disorders and the clinical significance of NES in individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: We recruited participants with eating problems at psychiatric outpatient clinics and from Internet referrals and age, sex, and educational level-comparable controls from September 2013 to April 2017. All participants received in-face structured clinical interv

Night eating syndrome: an overview.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this review is to outline the nosographic characteristics of NES and the most reliable ethiopathogenetic theories in relation to the most recent evidence in the literature. KEY FINDINGS: The night eating syndrome (NES) is a disorder occurring at the stated time, that does not meet the criteria for any specific eating disorder. NES is characterized by a reduced feeding during the day, evening hyperphagia accompanied by frequent nocturnal awakenings associated with conscious episodes of compulsive ingestion of food and abnormal circadian rhythms of food and other neur

Treatment of night eating syndrome.

Although treatment research for NES remains limited, several options are available for patients whose symptoms require clinical attention. Pharmacotherapy has received the most empirical support of the proposed treatments. Controlled trials are needed to confirm the initial results from pilot studies with CBT, behavioral therapy, and phototherapy, and an extended controlled trial of progressive muscle relaxation would be useful. In their comprehensive review of the field, Striegel-Moore and colleagues have questioned the clinical utility of NES as a diagnostic entity and stress the very limite

Night eating patterns of individuals with eating disorders: implications for conceptualizing the night eating syndrome.

The prevalence, correlates, and symptom coherence of night eating syndrome (NES) in individuals seeking inpatient treatment for eating disorders were assessed. Inpatients (n=68; M age=29.8 years; % female=94.1; % diagnosed with anorexia nervosa [AN]=47.1; % diagnosed with bulimia nervosa [BN]=47.1) were interviewed with the Night Eating Syndrome History and Inventory. Additionally, medical charts were reviewed and participants completed measures of eating behavior and quality of life. NES was diagnosed in 25% of patients; significantly more patients diagnosed with BN meet criteria for NES comp

'In the night kitchen': A scoping review on the night eating syndrome.

BACKGROUND: First described in 1955, night eating syndrome refers to an abnormal eating behavior clinically defined by the presence of evening hyperphagia (>25% of daily caloric intake) and/or nocturnal awaking with food ingestion occurring ⩾ 2 times per week. AIMS: Although the syndrome is frequently comorbid with obesity, metabolic and psychiatric disorders, its etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, assessment and treatment still remain not fully understood. METHODS: This review was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines; PubMed

Night eating syndrome : diagnosis, epidemiology and management.

BACKGROUND: Marathon running, while offering health benefits, is associated with a high incidence of knee injuries. The infrapatellar fat pad (IFP) plays a critical role in knee joint homeostasis and injury mitigation. This study investigated IFP adaptations to the acute stress of marathon running using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Fourteen amateur marathon runners (12 male, two female) were prospectively enrolled and underwent 3.0T MRI (GE SIGNA Architect) one week before and after the marathon. Left knee imaging included MAGiC and IDEAL-IQ sequences. MAGiC sequenc

Binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome: a comparative study of disordered eating.

The authors compared eating patterns, disordered eating, features of eating disorders, and depressive symptoms in persons with binge eating disorder (BED; n = 177), with night eating syndrome (NES; n = 68), and in an overweight comparison group without BED or NES (comparison; n = 45). Participants completed semistructured interviews and several established measures. Depressive symptoms were greater in the BED and NES groups than in the comparison group. NES participants ate fewer meals during the day and more during the night than BED and comparison participants, whereas BED participants ate m

[Night eating syndrome and nocturnal eating--what is it all about?].

In the first description of the night eating syndrome (NES) 1955 by Stunkard et al. the criteria included (1) consumption of at least 25% of the total calories for the day after the evening meal, (2) sleeplessness, at least until midnight more than one half of the time and (3) morning anorexia with negligible food intake at breakfast. Further studies altered these criteria step by step, without ever relating to the changes already made by other authors. So today our knowledge about NES and its related features is based on an amazing variety of constructs merely referred to by the same term. Ho

Night eating and night eating syndrome: associations with dysfunctional eating behaviors, mental health and quality-of-life measures in Australian adults.

PURPOSE: The association of night eating (NE) and NE syndrome (NES) with dysfunctional eating behaviors, mental health and quality-of-life outcomes has been little explored in the general population. The objective of this study was to explore this for dysfunctional eating behaviors: binge-eating, use of purging, dietary restriction, use of medication to control weight; mental health: anxiety/depression; and quality-of-life outcomes: mental and physical health-related quality of life (M/PHRQoL). NE captured whether in the past 3 months, the respondents had any episodes of waking from sleep and

Night Eating Syndrome: Report of a family case.

Night eating syndrome (NES) represents a circadian delay in the pattern of eating. As there are genetic links for other eating- and circadian-based disorders, it is likely that there is a genetic basis for NES as well. We present a family case study of three identified patients and their extensive family history of NES and co-morbid mood disorders. This case report suggested that NES may have a heritable feature, particularly nocturnal ingestions. Of the seven identified cases, four had co-morbid mood disorders, and all descended from a couple with bipolar disorder and delusional disorder. Mor

The validity and clinical utility of night eating syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To review the empirical literature for evidence in support of inclusion of Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. METHOD: Based on a literature search using PubMed, 47 empirical studies of NES were identified. RESULTS: The literature reflects use of varying definitions; progress has been made toward reliable measurement of night eating symptoms; evidence regarding a differentiation of NES from "normalcy" or from other eating disorders is based largely on samples of convenience; only one controlled treatment st

An Updated Review of Night Eating Syndrome: An Under-Represented Eating Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Night eating syndrome (NES) is an eating disorder that has historically been under-studied. The current review aims to summarize the most up-to-date research on NES to support better awareness. RECENT FINDINGS: Since NES was recently included as a formal diagnosis, research on the prevalence of NES is ever evolving. Current studies underscore the high comorbidity between NES and other eating disorders, with additional complexities for patient with comorbid eating disorders. Recent findings also support the association between NES and sleep correlates, a relationship that ha

The Night Eating Syndrome (NES) in Bariatric Surgery Patients.

The night eating syndrome (NES) has been included into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 as an example of an 'other-specified feeding or eating disorder'. The prevalence of NES has found to be higher in obese populations than in the general population and seems to rise with increasing body mass index. Recent studies suggest a prevalence of 2%-20% in bariatric surgery samples. Given that the core feature of this eating disorder may involve a shift in the circadian pattern of eating that disrupts sleep, and not the ingestion of objectively large amounts of food, it is a

Pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for night eating syndrome in adults.

BACKGROUND: Pathological dietary patterns are influenced by various interacting factors, including psychoactive drugs, psychological and biological conditions, and environmental determinants, and are frequently associated with failure in conventional weight loss treatments, especially in obese individuals. Night eating syndrome (NES) is characterized by excessive food consumption at night, often linked to disrupted circadian rhythms and psychosocial triggers. METHODS: This review evaluated pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for NES in adults. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) co

Night eating syndrome in young adults: delineation from other eating disorders and clinical significance.

The Night Eating Syndrome (NES) is a recently described disordered eating style whose status in current diagnostic systems needs to be further clarified. The aim of this study was to increase knowledge about the clinical features of NES in a sample of 1514 young adults aged 18-26 years from the general population who participated in an anonymous Internet survey. We first examined characteristics of NES and tried to delineate it from healthy controls as well as from other eating disorders in terms of socio-demography, eating disorder pathology and general psychopathology. Second, we attempted t
