Simultaneous effect of temperature, cyanide and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria concentrations on ammonia oxidation.

For biological nitrification, a set of experiments were carried out to approximate the response of lag period along with ammonia oxidation rate with respect to different concentrations of cyanide (CN-) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and temperature variation in laboratory-scale batch reactors. The effects of simultaneous changes in these three factors on ammonia oxidation were quantitatively estimated and modeled using response surface analysis. The lag period and the ammonia oxidation rate responded differently to changes in the three factors. The lag period and the ammonia oxidation r

Achieving deep autotrophic nitrogen removal in aerated biofilter driven by sponge iron: Performance and mechanism.

Different from anammox, the combination of Fe (III) reduction coupled to anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) and nitrate/nitrite dependent ferrous oxidation (NDFO) do not require to control nitrite accumulation. Furthermore, sponge iron can avoid continuous iron supplementation in practice and is a good iron source for the occurrence of Feammox and NDFO in wastewater treatment. Therefore, a biofilter using sponge iron as carrier treating low nitrogen wastewater was built. In this study, the performances of nitrogen removal were explored under different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and ga

Biochar of invasive plants alleviated impact of acid rain on soil microbial community structure and functionality better than liming.

Acid rain and invasive plants have quintessential adverse impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. As an environmentally safe method for disposal of invasive plants, we tested the effect of biochar produced from these plants in altering soil deterioration under acid rain as compared with lime. Given the impacts of the feedstock type and soil properties on the response of soil to the added biochar, we hypothesized that the microbial community and functions would respond differently to the charred invasive plants under acid rain. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the response of soil microbiom

Oxygen dependent nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) dynamics during aerobic ammonia oxidation.

Ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOM) produce atmospherically active gases, such as nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N₂O), as intermediates and byproducts of ammonia oxidation, which contribute to ozone depletion and climate change, respectively. While individual AOM groups have been studied for NO or N₂O production separately, a direct, real-time comparison of oxygen (O₂) consumption and depletion alongside NO and N₂O dynamics across all three groups ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea [AOB and AOA] and complete ammonia oxidizers [comammox] under comparable growth conditions has not b

High diversity of nitrifying bacteria and archaea in biofilms from a subsea tunnel.

Microbial biofilm formation can contribute to the accelerated deterioration of steel-reinforced concrete structures and significantly impact their service life, making it critical to understand the diversity of the biofilm community and prevailing processes in these habitats. Here, we analyzed 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomics sequencing data to study the abundance and diversity of nitrifiers within biofilms on the concrete surface of the Oslofjord subsea road tunnel in Norway. We showed that the abundance of nitrifiers varied greatly in time and space, with a mean abundance of 24.7 ± 15

Soil microbes of an urban remnant riparian zone have greater potential for N removal than a degraded riparian zone.

Soils in the riparian zone, the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, may decrease anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loads to streams through microbial transformations (e.g., denitrification). However, the ecological functioning of riparian zones is often compromised due to degraded conditions (e.g., vegetation clearing). Here we compare the efficacy of an urban remnant and a cleared riparian zone for supporting a putative denitrifying microbial community using 16S rRNA sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction of archaeal and bacterial nitrogen cycling genes. Although we

Liana species and fertilization shape rhizosphere bacterial communities in abandoned iron mines.

Climbing plants, with their vigorous root systems, strong adaptability, large biomass, and wide range of uses, hold great potential in mine soil restoration. To explore the ecological restoration effects of different liana species, the Longtie mining area in Longmen County, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, China, was selected as the study site. Six liana species-Canavalia gladiata, Benincasa hispida, Pueraria montana, Mucuna pruriens, Ipomoea quamoclit, and Ormosia semicastrata were subjected to two treatments: fertilization and non-fertilization. The soil microbial diversity and community st

Diversity and Structural Composition of Bacterial Communities in Mineral Springs of the Andean-Amazonian Transition Zone in Northern Peru.

Mineral springs in the Andean-Amazonian transition represent poorly explored aquatic ecosystems whose hydrogeochemical heterogeneity may favor the establishment of specialized microbial communities. In this study, bacterial communities in sediments from 19 mineral springs in northern Peru were characterized using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and their relationships with hydrogeochemical conditions and predicted functional potential were evaluated. The springs exhibited temperatures ranging from 15.1 to 38.2 °C and total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations ranging from 0.022 to 162.5 mg L-1, ref

Effects of different intercropping patterns on tea rhizosphere environment and leaf quality.

Intercropping can improve tea soils and leaf quality, but partner-specific responses remain unclear. We compared four systems-Paris polyphylla-tea (CT), leguminous green manure-tea (LF), Pleurotus ostreatus-tea (CJ), and Polygonatum kingianum-tea (HJ)-with matched monoculture controls. Tea and soil traits were integrated with high-throughput sequencing, LEfSe, PICRUSt2 functional prediction, and correlation analyses. LF significantly increased soil available and total phosphorus, enriched the potentially beneficial fungi Mortierella and Trichoderma in the tea rhizosphere, and enhanced the pred

Ferrous ion as a reducing agent in the generation of antibiofilm nitric oxide from a copper-based catalytic system.

The work found that the electron-donating properties of ferrous ions (Fe2+) can be used for the conversion of nitrite (NO2-) into the biofilm-dispersing signal nitric oxide (NO) by a copper(II) complex (CuDTTCT) catalyst, a potentially applicable biofilm control technology for the water industries. The availability of Fe2+ varied depending on the characteristics of the aqueous systems (phosphate- and carbonate-containing nitrifying bacteria growth medium, NBGM and phosphate buffered saline, PBS at pH 6 to 8, to simulate conditions typically present in the water industries) and was found to aff

Illumina and PacBio insights into the metataxonomic enrichment of fish pond sediment microbiota via Candida albicans co-culture.

As complex ecological systems, fish pond sediments host diverse microbial communities adapted to low-oxygen and chemically heterogeneous conditions, which foster unique metabolic pathways and the production of specialized secondary metabolites. Many of these compounds display antimicrobial, antifungal, or anticancer properties with biotechnological relevance. Sediments also accumulate organic matter and natural substrates that shape selective pressures, further enhancing microbial biochemical diversity. Consequently, fish pond sediments are increasingly recognized as promising reservoirs of no

Response of bacterial community metabolites to bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum: a multi-omics analysis.

The soil microbial community plays a critical role in promoting robust plant growth and serves as an effective defence mechanism against root pathogens. Current research has focused on unravelling the compositions and functions of diverse microbial taxa in plant rhizospheres invaded by Ralstonia solanacearum, however, the specific mechanisms by which key microbial groups with distinct functions exert their effects remain unclear. In this study, we employed a combination of amplicon sequencing and metabolomics analysis to investigate the principal metabolic mechanisms of key microbial taxa in p

Various physico-chemical stress factors cause prophage induction in Nitrosospira multiformis 25196--an ammonia oxidizing bacteria.

Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and contribute significant changes in the overall bacterial community. Prophages are formed when temperate bacteriophages integrate their DNA into the bacterial chromosome during the lysogenic cycle of the phage infection to bacteria. The prophage (phage DNA integrated into bacterial genome) on the bacterial genome remains dormant, but can cause cell lysis under certain environmental conditions. This research examined the effect of various environmental stress factors on the ammonia oxidation and prophage induction in a model ammonia oxidizing ba
