Noise schemas aid hearing in noise.

Human hearing is robust to noise, but the basis of this robustness is poorly understood. Several lines of evidence are consistent with the idea that the auditory system adapts to sound components that are stable over time, potentially achieving noise robustness by suppressing noise-like signals. Yet background noise often provides behaviorally relevant information about the environment and thus seems unlikely to be completely discarded by the auditory system. Motivated by this observation, we explored whether noise robustness might instead be mediated by internal models of noise structure that

Practical ranges of loudness levels of various types of environmental noise, including traffic noise, aircraft noise, and industrial noise.

In environmental noise control one commonly employs the A-weighted sound level as an approximate measure of the effect of noise on people. A measure that is more closely related to direct human perception of noise is the loudness level. At constant A-weighted sound level, the loudness level of a noise signal varies considerably with the shape of the frequency spectrum of the noise signal. In particular the bandwidth of the spectrum has a large effect on the loudness level, due to the effect of critical bands in the human hearing system. The low-frequency content of the spectrum also has an eff

Ambient noise strategy: a solution for noise control?

The British Government earlier this year undertook a consultation on its proposal, announced in the Rural White Paper, to develop an Ambient Noise Strategy in England. The proposals envisage a three phase approach: In phase 1 we would aim to establish three key sets of information: information on the ambient noise climate in the country--i.e. the number of people affected by different levels of noise, the source of that noise (road, rail, airports and industry) and the location of the people affected, by producing noise maps of the main sources of noise; methods which the Government might use

[Factory noise].

Regulations dealing with noise and vibration are examined in the light of general precepts on safeguarding the physical health of workers to be found in the Civil Code, the workers' charter and, i.e. those included in the prevention of accidents at work legislation, that dealing with health in the work environment, and the recent national health service law. A brief account is also given of the approach taken by the courts to the disputed question of the evaluation of damage to the hearing, and maximum noise acceptability levels. Reference is also made to a personal study of the risks imposed

Adverse Cardiovascular Effects of Traffic Noise with a Focus on Nighttime Noise and the New WHO Noise Guidelines.

Exposure to traffic noise is associated with stress and sleep disturbances. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently concluded that road traffic noise increases the risk for ischemic heart disease and potentially other cardiometabolic diseases, including stroke, obesity, and diabetes. The WHO report focused on whole-day noise exposure, but new epidemiological and translational field noise studies indicate that nighttime noise, in particular,is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) through increased levels of stress hormones and vascular oxidative stress, leading to endo

Noise levels at baseball stadiums and the spectators' attitude to noise.

BACKGROUND: Many public health professionals have expressed concern that regular participation in recreational settings with high noise levels might induce hearing loss. This study measures the noise levels in a baseball stadium and analyzes baseball fans' attitude of effect of recreational noise exposure on their hearing. METHODS: In the baseball stadium, noise levels from the beginning to the end of four games were measured in four seating sections, the red, blue, navy, and outfield sections using a sound level meter. For the survey sample, 344 randomly selected participants who visited the

The effects of interrupted noise exposures on the noise-damaged cochlea.

A variety of interrupted noise exposure paradigms will produce a toughening effect in the mammalian auditory system. That is, the threshold shift will gradually become smaller with each successive daily exposure. The ability of the system to be toughened has not been explored in subjects with a pre-existing noise-induced hearing loss. Using the chinchilla as the experimental animal, evoked potential audiometry to obtain thresholds, and surface preparation histology to quantify the sensory cell population, the issue of toughening was examined in the noise-damaged auditory system. Toughening was

Noise-induced annoyance from transportation noise: short-term responses to a single noise source in a laboratory.

An experimental study was performed to compare the annoyances from civil-aircraft noise, military-aircraft noise, railway noise, and road-traffic noise. Two-way within-subjects designs were applied in this research. Fifty-two subjects, who were naive listeners, were given various stimuli with varying levels through a headphone in an anechoic chamber. Regardless of the frequency weighting network, even under the same average energy level, civil-aircraft noise was the most annoying, followed by military-aircraft noise, railway noise, and road-traffic noise. In particular, penalties in the time-a

Noise in the brain: Transcranial random noise stimulation and perceptual noise act on a stochastic resonance-like mechanism.

Stochastic resonance (SR) is a phenomenon in which a certain amount of random noise added to a weak subthreshold stimulus can enhance signal detectability. It is unknown how external noise interacts with neural noise in producing an SR-like phenomenon and whether this interaction results in a modulation of either network efficiency or the efficiency of single neurons. Using random dot motion stimuli and noninvasive brain stimulation, we attempted to unveil the specific mechanism of action of the SR-like phenomenon in motion perception, if present. We aimed to determine whether signal integrati

[Noise and the heart].

Traffic-related environmental noise represents a widespread and relevant environmental factor in Europe that is associated with a substantial burden of disease. Current estimates indicate that a significant proportion of the population is exposed to noise levels linked to adverse health effects. Cardiovascular diseases are among the most extensively studied outcomes in this context. Epidemiological studies consistently demonstrate associations between long-term exposure to traffic noise and an increased risk of arterial hypertension, ischemic heart disease, myocardial infarction, heart failure

Orbitrap noise structure and method for noise unbiased multivariate analysis.

Orbitrap mass spectrometry is widely used in the life-sciences. However, like all mass spectrometers, non-uniform (heteroscedastic) noise introduces bias in multivariate analysis complicating data interpretation. Here, we study the noise structure of an Orbitrap mass analyser integrated into a secondary ion mass spectrometer (OrbiSIMS). Using a stable primary ion beam to provide a well-controlled source of ions from a silver sample, we find that noise has three characteristic regimes: at low signals the Orbitrap detector noise and a censoring algorithm dominates; at intermediate signals counti

Noise Exposure Questionnaire: A Tool for Quantifying Annual Noise Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to both occupational and nonoccupational noise is recognized as a risk factor for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Although audiologists routinely inquire regarding history of noise exposure, there are limited tools available for quantifying this history or for identifying those individuals who are at highest risk for NIHL. Identifying those at highest risk would allow hearing conservation activities to be focused on those individuals. PURPOSE: To develop a detailed, task-based questionnaire for quantifying an individual's annual noise exposure (ANE) arising from both o

Relationship between exposure to multiple noise sources and noise annoyance.

Relationships between exposure to noise [metric: day-night level (DNL) or day-evening-night level (DENL)] from a single source (aircraft, road traffic, or railways) and annoyance based on a large international dataset have been published earlier. Also for stationary sources relationships have been assessed. Here the annoyance equivalents model concerning noise annoyance from combined sources and the underlying assumptions are presented. The model first translates the noise from the individual sources into the equally annoying sound levels of a reference source, road traffic, and then sums thes

Noise, noise sensitivity and psychiatric disorder: epidemiological and psychophysiological studies.

Noise, a prototypical environmental stressor, has clear health effects in causing hearing loss but other health effects are less evident. Noise exposure may lead to minor emotional symptoms but the evidence of elevated levels of aircraft noise leading to psychiatric hospital admissions and psychiatric disorder in the community is contradictory. Despite this there are well documented associations between noise exposure and changes in performance, sleep disturbance and emotional reactions such as annoyance. Moreover, annoyance is associated with both environmental noise level and psychological a

[Noise and hearing].

The injuries induced by noise to auditory system affect above all the inner ear. Thus the hair cells forming the most fragile structures of the sensorial neuro-epithelium will suffer from hair disturbances. As a result these lesions will reduce hearing acuity and sensitivity leading to noise induced hearing loss. There are two types of hearing loss. The sudden hearing loss, called acute sonorous trauma, or the insidious one due to industrial-like noises. On the other hand, noisy environments may have some effects on the intelligibility known as effects on the recognition of speech. To conclude
