The aim of the research was to evaluate the risk for the health of the disco-goers related to no-professional exposition to noise produced by speakers of discos. The noise has been measured in the middle of a disco using a class 1 phonometer. The exposition level was calculated using the formula quoted in the D.Lgs 277/91 (Italian legislative decree) and the possible damage was calculated using the Casini's formula. The calculated daily exposition level was 99,1 dBA and the weekly exposition was 92.1 dBA. The results indicate that the hypacusia damage due to these expositions can be considered

The authors report the data related to the measures effected in some environments where leisure time activities are developed. In the light of the elevated values, the authors have effected the calculation of the Lep,d as laid down by D.Lgs 277/91 to verify the existence of conditions of risk that result verified.

This paper comprises a review of the evidence for the possibility that exposure to noise may damage the vestibular receptors in the internal ear as well as those in the cochlea. The review covers lay and medical publications, observations on patients, experimental studies, and compensation claims. It concludes that the verdict must be "not proven"--that is, although such damage is possible, the evidence is not strong enough to regard it as probable.

INTRODUCTION: Noise is one of the most common worldwide environmental pollutants, especially in occupational fields. As a stressor, it affects not only the ear but also the entire body. Its physiological and psychological impacts have been well established in many conditions such as cardiovascular diseases. However, there is a dearth of evidence regarding diabetes risk related to noises.
AIM: To evaluate the relationship between occupational exposure to noise and the risk of developing diabetes.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analytical study enrolling two groups of 151 workers each. The

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between occupational noise exposure and blood pressure.
METHODS: We studied 8811 workers at a metallurgical factory, who were exposed to different levels of noise at the worksite: < or = 80 dB for 8078 workers and > 80 dB for 733 workers. A clinical examination, including measurements of blood pressure (by mercury sphygmomanometer, Korotkoff phases I and V), heart rate (by pulse palpation), body weight and height, was performed. The subjects were stratified into four age groups (18-30, 31-40, 41-50 and > 50 years) and into two body mass index groups:

A study was made at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center to measure the hearing levels of persons working in a noisy environment. Two different workplaces, central air-conditioning plant and glass flowing shops, where a number of persons were exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A) were chosen. The occupational exposure to noise was determined using a sound level meter, an octave band filter and a personal noise dose meter. The hearing levels of persons exposed to these high levels of noise and a control group not exposed to occupational noise were measured by means of a pure-tone audiometer i

BACKGROUND: Noise may increase the risk of hypertension, but findings are inconsistent with respect to both community and occupational noise exposure. We used a large sample of noise-exposed industrial trades to analyze the association of occupational noise exposure and the risk of hypertension.
METHODS: The 7-year prospective cohort study included 145,190 workers from 625 companies representing 10 industrial trades and 100 companies from the finance sector. They were followed from 2001 to 2007 by record linkage with several Danish national registries. Full-shift noise exposure levels, measur

The role of occupational exposure to noise as a hypertension risk factor has not been established sufficiently. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether chronic exposure to different levels of noise in two groups of pilots, operating with two types of aircraft, could be a risk for hypertension, what relevance the parameters (intensity, duration and type) of exposure can have and, lastly, whether there are any links between hearing impairment and hypertension. After excluding pilots with confounding factors, a study was made of 77 male pilots of turboprop planes (group A) and 224 male pilots

The results from routine medical screening of 806 workers in a very wide range of different occupational activities were analysed in order to assess the relationship between blood pressure and occupational exposure to noise. Blood pressure was measured for each worker by conventional methods. Noise exposure was estimated according to the main company activity and each worker's specific job, computing three categories of noise exposure: low, medium and high. Preliminary analysis of the data did not reveal any relationship between noise exposure and blood pressure. Nevertheless, when comparing t

The effects of age, sex, socioeconomic background and noise exposure on hearing were examined in a population sample. Subjects, aged between 17 and 80 years, were selected from the electoral register using a stratified random sampling technique based on age and reported hearing difficulty. Exposure to occupational, social and gunfire noises was estimated retrospectively from a structured interview. Analysis of the audiograms of 2,162 subjects free from any material conductive impairment led to a simple model requiring only first-order factors of age, occupational group (manual or non-manual) a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The harmful effects of workplace noise pollution are well known and described in the literature. The effects of prolonged exposure to noise in areas demanding high level of concentration, such as operating rooms, depend on the variability of individual responses and intensity of different generation sources. The aim of this paper is to present a review of occupational exposure to noise in anesthesiology.
CONTENT: The results of the main articles in literature on the subject are discussed, concerning the sources of noise pollution and its effects on workers, particul

A hearing impairment can have profound psychologic consequences. A major cause of hearing loss is exposure to excessive noise in the workplace. Stricter regulations to protect the hearing of workers became effective this year. A constructive role for the family physician is to educate the patient about the importance of hearing conservation, to reinforce compliance with personal hearing protection measures, and to support appropriate rehabilitative intervention.

Occupational noise exposure accounts for approximately 16% of all disabling hearing losses, but the true value and societal costs may be grossly underestimated because current regulations only identify hearing impairments in the workplace if exposures result in audiometric threshold shifts within a limited frequency region. Research over the past several decades indicates that occupational noise exposures can cause other serious auditory deficits such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, extended high-frequency hearing loss, and poor speech perception in noise. Beyond the audiogram, there is growing awar

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is well known to be an epidemiologically relevant problem. The subjects affected with NIHL show alteration of hearing thresholds as well as a worsening of the cochlear analysis functions and, usually, an impaired speech discrimination in presence of background noise. The study has evaluated the relationships between hearing threshold and equivalent exposure lever per day (Lepd), age and working seniority in a homogeneous sample of occupationally noise exposed workers. Three subgroups were also selected to study the most important cochlear function

In recent years, findings that exposure to industrial chemicals may affect hearing and interact with noise brought to light a risk that had not been given substantial attention previously. The need for research becomes clear when the magnitude of the population of workers exposed to noise and chemicals and the number of potentially hazardous chemicals found in work environments are taken into consideration. The need for research is this area is further heightened by the fact that there are no guidelines or standards for combined exposures of chemical and physical agents. The present paper revi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Up to 30 million workers in the United States are exposed to potentially detrimental levels of noise. Although reliable medications for minimizing or reversing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) are not currently available, NIHL is entirely preventable. The purpose of this article is to review the epidemiology and pathophysiology of occupational NIHL. We will focus on at-risk populations and discuss prevention programs. Current prevention programs focus on reducing inner ear damage by minimizing environmental noise production and through the use of personal hearing protective

A small number of prior epidemiologic studies of occupational noise exposure based on self-report have suggested an association with acoustic neuroma. The goal of the present study was to further examine the association between noise exposure and acoustic neuroma by using an objective measure of exposure in the form of a job exposure matrix. A total of 793 acoustic neuroma cases aged 21-84 years were identified between 1987 and 1999 from the Swedish Cancer Registry. The 101,756 controls randomly selected from the study base were frequency matched to cases on age, sex, and calendar year of diag

AIMS: To investigate the hypothesis that long term exposure to excessive noise can increase the risk of ischaemic heart disease.
METHODS: A case-control design, nested within a cohort of nuclear power workers employed at two sites in England over the period 1950-98, was used. Cases were men who died from ischaemic heart disease (ICD-9: 410-414) aged 75 or under; each was matched to a surviving control of the nearest age who joined the same site at the same time. Personal noise exposure was assessed retrospectively for each man by hygienists using (1) company work histories, (2) noise survey r

We measured 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and 16-hour noise exposure continuously for 20 automobile workers, and used linear mixed-effects regression models to estimate transient and sustained effects of noise exposure on blood pressure. The occupational noise levels of the high-exposure workers with 85 +/- 8 dBA were significantly higher than those of the low-exposure workers with 59 +/- 4 dBA (P < 0.05). We found a significant difference of 16 +/- 6 mm Hg in sleep-time systolic blood pressure (SBP) existed between 2 exposure groups, and a marginal increase of 1 mm Hg SBP per 1-dBA increa
