Dimensional Synthesis for Emulating Nonlinear Disclination Dynamics.

Nonlinearity plays a central role in topological defect states, governing their stability, localization, and dynamics beyond the linear regime. However, investigating nonlinear dynamics of states in three- and higher-dimensional systems remains highly challenging due to fabrication difficulties and the constraints imposed by spatial dimensionality. Here, we overcome this limitation by employing one-dimensional synthesized lattices (1DSLs). Using anchor-site and anchor-mode mappings, we demonstrate that 1DSLs provide a versatile one-dimensional platform for emulating the essential nonlinear dyn

Nonlinear dynamics of membrane skeleton in osteocyte.

Osteocytes play an important role in mechanosensation and conduction in bone tissue, and the change of mechanical environment can affect the sensitivity of osteocytes to external stimulation. The structure of osteocytes will be changed when they are subjected to vibrations, which influence the mechanosensitivity of osteocytes and alter the regulation of bone remodeling process. As an important mechanotransduction structure in osteocytes, the membrane skeleton greatly affects the mechanosensation and conduction of osteocytes. However, the dynamic responses of membrane skeleton to the vibration

Applications of nonlinear dynamics to clinical cardiology.

(1) Nonlinear mechanisms may apply both to the understanding of SA-AV node interactions and to bifurcations leading to certain types of AV block. (2) The fractal His-Purkinje system serves as the structural substrate for the generation of the broadband, inverse power-law spectrum of the stable ventricular depolarization (QRS) waveform. (3) Fractal anatomy is also seen in multiple other systems: pulmonary, hepatobiliary, renal, etc. Fractal morphogenesis may reflect a type of critical phenomenon that results in the generation of these irregular, but self-similar structures. Assessment of osseointegration by nonlinear dynamic response.

Quantitative assessment of osseointegration remains a goal of researchers and clinicians alike. In this study, an instrument was designed for this purpose and tested in an animal model. Effective mechanical impedance, linearized for quasi-static force, was measured in 22 implants placed in the hind tibiae of 2 large hounds. The results demonstrate that in this animal long-bone model, the effective impedance of titanium root-form implants exhibits a degree of nonlinear behavior correlated with their state of osseointegration. This observation may be the basis for useful clinical instrumentation

Nonlinear effects in the dynamics of clouds of bubbles.

This paper presents a spectral analysis of the response of a fluid containing bubbles to the motions of a wall oscillating normal to itself. First, a Fourier analysis of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation is used to obtain an approximate solution for the nonlinear effects in the oscillation of a single bubble in an infinite fluid. This is used in the approximate solution of the oscillating wall problem, and the resulting expressions are evaluated numerically in order to examine the nonlinear effects. Harmonic generation results from the nonlinearity. It is observed that the bubble natural frequency

Nonlinear dynamics in pulse-modulated feedback drug dosing.

Pulse-modulated feedback is utilized in drug dosing to mimic sustained over a longer period of time manual discrete dose administration, the latter is in contrast with continuous drug infusion. The intermittent mode of dosing calls for a hybrid (continuous-discrete) modeling of the closed-loop system, where the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug are captured by differential equations whereas the control law is described by difference equations. Hybrid dynamics are highly nonlinear which complicates formal design of pulse-modulated feedback. This paper demonstrates complex nonlin

Nonlinear dynamics underlying sensory processing dysfunction in schizophrenia.

Natural systems, including the brain, often seem chaotic, since they are typically driven by complex nonlinear dynamical processes. Disruption in the fluid coordination of multiple brain regions contributes to impairments in information processing and the constellation of symptoms observed in neuropsychiatric disorders. Schizophrenia (SZ), one of the most debilitating mental illnesses, is thought to arise, in part, from such a network dysfunction, leading to impaired auditory information processing as well as cognitive and psychosocial deficits. Current approaches to neurophysiologic biomarker

Nonlinear Dynamics Forecasting of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Onsets.

Recent advances in sensor technologies and predictive analytics are fueling the growth in point-of-care (POC) therapies for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other sleep disorders. The effectiveness of POC therapies can be enhanced by providing personalized and real-time prediction of OSA episode onsets. Previous attempts at OSA prediction are limited to capturing the nonlinear, nonstationary dynamics of the underlying physiological processes. This paper reports an investigation into heart rate dynamics aiming to predict in real time the onsets of OSA episode before the clinical symptoms appea

The nonlinear feedback dynamics of asymmetric political polarization.

Using a general model of opinion dynamics, we conduct a systematic investigation of key mechanisms driving elite polarization in the United States. We demonstrate that the self-reinforcing nature of elite-level processes can explain this polarization, with voter preferences accounting for its asymmetric nature. Our analysis suggests that subtle differences in the frequency and amplitude with which public opinion shifts left and right over time may have a differential effect on the self-reinforcing processes of elites, causing Republicans to polarize more quickly than Democrats. We find that as

Nonlinear dynamics and multiscale mechanisms of deep brain stimulation.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for movement disorders and an expanding therapy for several neuropsychiatric conditions, yet its mechanisms of action remain incompletely understood. Early interpretations largely relied on linear and focal models, framing DBS as local excitation, inhibition, or a reversible lesion. Accumulating evidence, however, indicates that DBS reorganizes neural activity across multiple spatial and temporal scales, engaging distributed circuits and network-level dynamics. Here, we synthesize experimental, computational, and clinical findings suppor

Current-Driven Nonlinear Skyrmion Dynamics in d-Wave Altermagnets.

The center of mass and helicity are two dynamic degrees of freedom of skyrmions. In this Letter, we study the current-driven skyrmion motion in frustrated d-wave altermagnets. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we find that the skyrmion helicity is not locked with the skyrmion Hall angle, but unidirectionally rotates with a global angular velocity proportional to the square of the current density. In addition, we find that the helicity rotation velocity is highly anisotropic, depending on the direction of current flows. We also observe helicity oscillation in the terahertz regime, where the nonl

Nonlinear dynamics of multi-omics profiles during human aging.

Aging is a complex process associated with nearly all diseases. Understanding the molecular changes underlying aging and identifying therapeutic targets for aging-related diseases are crucial for increasing healthspan. Although many studies have explored linear changes during aging, the prevalence of aging-related diseases and mortality risk accelerates after specific time points, indicating the importance of studying nonlinear molecular changes. In this study, we performed comprehensive multi-omics profiling on a longitudinal human cohort of 108 participants, aged between 25 years and 75 year

Nonlinear dynamics of C-terminal tails in cellular microtubules.

The mechanical and electrical properties, and information processing capabilities of microtubules are the permanent subject of interest for carrying out experiments in vitro and in silico, as well as for theoretical attempts to elucidate the underlying processes. In this paper, we developed a new model of the mechano-electrical waves elicited in the rows of very flexible C-terminal tails which decorate the outer surface of each microtubule. The fact that C-terminal tails play very diverse roles in many cellular functions, such as recruitment of motor proteins and microtubule-associated protein

Describing pediatric dysphonia with nonlinear dynamic parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Nonlinear dynamic analysis has emerged as a reliable and objective tool for assessing voice disorders. However, it has only been tested on adult populations. In the present study, nonlinear dynamic analysis was applied to normal and dysphonic pediatric populations with the goal of collecting normative data. Jitter analysis was also applied in order to compare nonlinear dynamic and perturbation measures. This study's findings will be useful in creating standards for the use of nonlinear dynamic analysis as a tool to describe dysphonia in the pediatric population. METHODS: The study

Surface-termination control of nonlinear dynamics in functionalized 2D NEMS.

Surface functionalization provides an important route for tuning the properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials, yet its implications for nonlinear nanomechanical behavior remain insufficiently understood. Here, we examine how surface termination may influence the mechanical and nonlinear response of functionalized 2D nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), with emphasis on MXenes and comparison with graphene oxide and MoS₂. By combining literature-derived structural and elastic data with a reduced-order nonlinear resonator framework, we examine the roles of termination-dependent bonding, stif

Nonlinear dynamics and chaos in a vocal-ventricular fold system.

In humans, ventricular folds are located superiorly to the vocal folds. Under special circumstances such as voice pathology or singing, they vibrate together with the vocal folds to contribute to the production of voice. In the present study, experimental data measured from physical models of the vocal and ventricular folds were analyzed in the light of nonlinear dynamics. The physical models provide a useful experimental framework to study the biomechanics of human vocalizations. Of particular interest in this experiment are co-oscillations of the vocal and ventricular folds, occasionally acc

On nonlinear dynamics of a fractional order monkeypox virus model.

In this work, we examine a fractional-order model for simulating the spread of the monkeypox virus in the human host and rodent populations. The employment of the fractional form of the model gives a better insight into the dynamics and spread of the virus, which will help in providing some new control measures. The model is formulated into eight mutually exclusive compartments and the form of a nonlinear system of differential equations. The reproduction number for the present epidemic system is found. In addition, the equilibrium points of the model are investigated and the associated stabil

Nonlinear broad band dynamics are less complex in major depression.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiac mortality is known to be increased in depressive patients. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive to date. Decreased heart rate variability (HRV) has been discussed as contributing to increased cardiac mortality, but studies examining patients suffering from major depressive disorder (MDD) have revealed inconsistent results. This study aimed to investigate long-term and broad band parameters of heart rate regulation in MDD, which have been shown to be more sensitive for the assessment of autonomic dysfunction. METHODS: A total of 18 non-medicated patients suffer

[A primary clinical study of HRV analysis of nonlinear dynamics].

We observed the changes of nonlinear dynamic parameters in the patients with diabetes and old myocardial infarction with the methods of nonlinear dynamics. The results indicate that the correlation dimension of the patients with old myocardial infarction is higher than that of the normal, their Lyapunov exponent is lower than the normal's; that the correlation dimension of the patients with diabetes is also higher than that of the normal, their Lyapunov exponent is lower than the normal's; and that the values of the entropy of the two patient groups are basically identical to the entropy of th

Polarization and transverse-mode nonlinear dynamics in a multimode VCSEL.

We theoretically analyze the nonlinear dynamics and routes to chaos in a multimode vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (MM-VCSEL) in free-running operation. Including higher order transverse modes (TMs) results in additional bifurcations at higher currents not found for single-mode VCSELs (SM-VCSELs). The resulting dynamics involve competition between modes with different transverse profiles and polarization and show good qualitative agreement with recent experiments.
