Prescription and Nonprescription Drug Use Among People With Eating Disorders.

IMPORTANCE: There are few effective pharmacotherapies for treating eating disorders (EDs). High rates of substance use among individuals with EDs suggest potential self-medication of symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences of individuals with EDs regarding use of prescribed and nonprescribed drugs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study assessed responses to the Medications and Other Drugs for Eating Disorders (MED-FED) survey, which was advertised internationally using social media, online forums, and clinical services and recruited adults who self-reported an ED or di

Developing consumer-centered, nonprescription drug labeling a study in acetaminophen.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., acetaminophen overdose has surpassed viral hepatitis as the leading cause of acute liver failure, and misuse contributes to more than 30,000 hospitalizations annually. Half to two thirds of acetaminophen overdoses are unintentional, suggesting the root cause is likely poor understanding of medication labeling or failure to recognize the consequences of exceeding the recommended maximum daily dosage. PURPOSE: Elicit subject feedback about active ingredient and dosing information on over-the-counter (OTC) acetaminophen and elicit feedback on proposed plain-language text

Alcoholism, nonprescription drug and hepatotoxicity. The risk from unknown acetaminophen ingestion.

An alcoholic patient developed severe hepatitis and renal failure after ingesting the contents of a 300 ml. bottle of Nyquil for its ethanol content. This illness was presumably related to the 6 gm. of acetaminophen contained in this nonprescription preparation. Although hepatic damage with or without renal failure is usually described after a massive overdose of acetaminophen, the changes in drug metabolism induced by chronic ethanol consumption may increase the risk for acetaminophen toxicity. The large number of nonprescription acetaminophen-ethanol preparations available should be consider

Prescription and nonprescription drug misuse and abuse in community pharmacies in Iraq: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: There is little known regarding prescription and nonprescription medicine nonmedical use (abuse and misuse) in Iraq, with limited treatment. Pharmacists could be a valuable source of information in the absence of any national monitoring system. AIMS: This study aimed to explore Iraqi community pharmacists' perspectives on prescription and nonprescription medicine abuse/misuse, including motives for use and how often they encounter people whom they think are misusing or abusing medicines. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken between November 2020 and February 2021. Com

Combination vs. single-drug nonprescription analgesics for acute pain management: A narrative review.

Combining nonprescription analgesics with different mechanisms of action has been proposed as a rational strategy to optimize the management of acute pain. This review assessed the efficacy and safety of nonprescription analgesics, including paracetamol (acetaminophen), metamizole and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used in combination vs. monotherapy in acute pain conditions. A literature search identified 25 studies that compared oral paracetamol combined with a nonprescription NSAID (oral or topical) vs. either or both components alone in an acute pain condition or in an acute

Fenbendazole-Associated Drug-Induced Liver Injury with Concomitant Use of Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid.

Influenced by the internet and social media, a growing number of individuals are taking hepatotoxic amounts of prescription and nonprescription drugs leading to drug-induced liver injuries (DILIs). We present a case of fenbendazole-associated DILI with concomitant use of tauroursodeoxycholic acid as an intended hepatoprotective agent. While fenbendazole-associated DILI has been increasingly reported, this case is unique due to associated tauroursodeoxycholic acid use, and, to our knowledge, represents the first published report of this exposure combination. This case builds on the growing lite

Prenatal and postnatal drug exposure: focus on persistent central effects.

Clinical studies indicate significant use of prescription, nonprescription and social/recreational drugs by women during pregnancy; however, limited knowledge exists about the detrimental effects that this practice may have on the developing central nervous system of the fetus. Importantly, few experimental and clinical data are available on how gestational exposure could exacerbate the effects of the same or a different drug consumed by the offspring later in life. The present review summarizes recent findings on the central toxicity elicited by several classes of drugs, administered prenatal

Nonprescription Hormone Use Among Transgender Women - National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Transgender Women, Seven Urban Areas, United States, 2019-2020.

Certain transgender women who seek gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT) face economic and social barriers that limit or prevent access to medically supervised GAHT. Transgender women facing such barriers might acquire GAHT without prescription, potentially without proper dosage, administration, and health monitoring in the absence of medical supervision. For this report, survey data were analyzed from 1,165 transgender women in seven urban areas in the United States to examine associations between self-reported use of nonprescription GAHT and known correlates of nonprescription GAHT, incl
