Nordic walking increases circulating VEGF more than traditional walking training in postmenopause.

OBJECTIVES: Nordic walking (NW) is widely practiced by postmenopausal women. Its effects are peculiar owing to the involvement of more muscle groups than in traditional walking training (WT). Since mechanical load promotes secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from both skeletal muscle and muscle endothelium, the aim of the study was to compare the effect of NW and WT on VEGF levels. METHOD: Thirty postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to NW or WT. Both groups trained 40-50 min/day, three times per week, at a mean intensity of 12 on a 15-category scale of the ratings of

Walking on four limbs: A systematic review of Nordic Walking in Parkinson disease.

Nordic Walking is a relatively high intensity activity that is becoming increasingly popular. It involves marching using poles adapted from cross-country skiing poles in order to activate upper body muscles that would not be used during normal walking. Several studies have been performed using this technique in Parkinson disease patients with contradictory results. Thus, we reviewed here all studies using this technique in Parkinson disease patients and further performed a meta-analysis of RCTs where Nordic Walking was evaluated against standard medical care or other types of physical exercise

Nordic walking--is it suitable for patients with fractured vertebra?

This article brings the biomechanical analysis of sport--Nordic walking--for patients with osteoporotic fractured vertebrae and shows that it is suitable for them. Based on the biomechanical model of skeletal load we have developed a method of walking movement for patients, different from the method of walking movement for healthy people. And so came into being the "first sport" for patients with osteoporotic fractures. They can go for regular walks in easy terrains outdoors with friends and family, and so be liberated from social isolation. It requires only one-off financial costs of buying t

Does Nordic Walking technique influence the ground reaction forces?

BACKGROUND: Nordic Walking (NW) practice has increased during the last decade, generating great benefits related to the reduction of ground reaction forces (GRF). However, there is still limited evidence regarding how the NW technique could affect GRF. RESEARCH QUESTION: To analyze the effect of the speed and the differences in ground reaction forces (GRF) between NW with Diagonal technique (DT) versus Alpha technique (AT) and compare them with normal walking (W) METHODS: 29 male physically active sport science students were randomly assigned to one of the training groups: AT (n = 15) or DT (

Nordic walking versus walking without poles for rehabilitation with cardiovascular disease: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: With Nordic walking, or walking with poles, one can travel a greater distance and at a higher rate than with walking without poles, but whether the activity is beneficial for patients with cardiovascular disease is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial was undertaken to determine whether Nordic walking was more effective than walking without poles on walk distance to support rehabilitation training for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). METHODS: Patients were recruited in a private specialized rehabilitatio

Estimation of energy expenditure of Nordic walking: a crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Nordic walking (NW) requires more energy compared with conventional walking (W). However, the metabolic equation for NW has not been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize responses in oxygen uptake, minute ventilation, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and surface electromyography of the upper and lower limb muscles during NW and W and develop a metabolic equation for energy expenditure (E, mL·kg- 1·min- 1) of NW. METHODS: This study was performed in a randomized, controlled, crossover design to test the energy expenditure during NW and W. Fifteen healthy young

Nordic Walking does not reduce the loading of the knee joint.

The use of Nordic Walking (NW) as a rehabilitation modality has increased considerably. NW (walking with poles) is advocated as a healthy physical activity that reduces the load on the knees. Few studies using the techniques of NW exist, and the findings are contradictory. The aim of this study was to investigate whether NW reduces the loadings upon the knee joint compared with walking without poles (NP). Seven experienced female NW instructors volunteered. Three-dimensional gait analyses were performed. Internal flexor and extensor joint moments were calculated using an inverse dynamics appro

Nordic walking for women with breast cancer: A systematic review.

Nordic walking (NW) seems to be an interesting rehabilitation strategy for women with breast cancer (BC). No review article that has synthesised and summarised the existing scientific evidence about the effect of NW on BC survivors has been published so far. A systematic review was conducted aimed at identifying the characteristics and methodological quality of the studies that have analysed the effects of NW on women with BC. The critical appraisal of the randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was retrieved from the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro). The methodological quality of the uncon

Effects of Nordic walking after total hip arthroplasty: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Hip osteoarthritis causes pain, reduced mobility, and functional limitations. Total hip arthroplasty relieves pain, but functional deficits may persist for months. Nordic walking, a low-impact gait modality using poles, may improve functional performance and physical activity in individuals with hip osteoarthritis and potentially after surgery. METHODS: This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Seven databases were searched from 2000 to February 2026 to identify studies evaluating Nordic walking in adults with hip osteoarthritis or total hip arthroplasty. Eligible design

Stick Together: A Nordic Walking Group Intervention for Breast Cancer Survivors.

Axillary lymph node dissection and axillary radiation as part of breast cancer treatment often result in arm and shoulder morbidity and limitations in daily functioning. Over and above the general benefits for cardiorespiratory fitness, Nordic Walking particularly targets at the muscles of the upper extremities and shoulder. This may increase shoulder range of motion and lead to a reduction in functional limitations. The aim of this study was to offer a Nordic Walking intervention to women after treatment for breast cancer and to investigate changes in subjective well-being and shoulder functi

Nordic walking alters orientation weighting but not dimensionality in lower-limb coordination.

Using a within-subject experimental design, we tested whether Nordic walking preserves the low-dimensional coordination of lower-limb elevation angles while reallocating roles within that structure in twelve healthy adults. Participants walked at their preferred speed with and without poles on an indoor walkway after standardized instruction. Segment elevation angles (thigh, shank, foot) were obtained with markerless motion capture and processed in OpenSim. Planar covariation quantified coordination: planarity as the variance explained by the first two principal components (VAFPC1 + VAFPC2), p

[Effects of nordic walking in individuals with Parkinson's disease: A review of systematic reviews].

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and non-motor impairments that substantially affect functional capacity and quality of life. Although pharmacological treatment remains the cornerstone of therapeutic management, exercise-based interventions have gained prominence as effective complementary strategies. Among these, Nordic walking has emerged as a potentially beneficial modality to enhance motor performance and increase overall muscular engagement during locomotion. This overview of systematic reviews aims to synthesize the available evidence
