Is nasal MRSA carriage a concern among African people and local communities in North Cyprus?

INTRODUCTION: The long-standing epidemic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has proven to be a challenging problem to solve and is becoming even more complex in a globalized world where there is little evidence of AMR patterns among multinational communities. This study aimed to determine the frequency of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage among African and local students in Northern Cyprus. METHODOLOGY: Nasal swabs were collected from African and local students between October 2023 and December 2023. The clinical samples were screened for the presence of MRSA. AMR bac

Humeral Septal Aperture in Ancient Tombos Nubians.

OBJECTIVE: The majority of the published literature regarding the septal aperture (SA) dates to the last 200 years. The archeological literature is sparse. The collection from Tombos along the Nile River (1400-656 BCE) provides an opportunity for further study of SA in ancient populations. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and shape of SA in the population as well as the size of the humerus and correlate that with and without SA in the Tombos population. METHODS: Adult humerus specimens from the Tombos skeletal population with intact distal humeri were studied using bo

Two cases of otosclerosis in Kumasi, Ghana, case report.

The incidence of otosclerosis in relationship to race has been established in North America; however, there are no reliable data about its occurrence among negro Africans. Over a period of three years 650 consecutive cases of hearing loss excluding those with acute and chronic otitis media, Eustachian tube dysfunction, wax, foreign bodies, and traumatic perforations, were studied in Kumasi, Ghana. Only two cases of otosclerosis were detected. It is postulated that the rarity among people of the black race may be related to the flat occipital protuberance of the skull among African people.

Genetic Landscape of Monogenic Parkinson's Disease in the African Population-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Most genetic studies on Parkinson's disease (PD) have been conducted in populations of European descent. The African population is under-represented in PD genetics research. The aim of this systematic review is to give a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of monogenic PD in Africa. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases until July 2025. Studies that analyzed at least one of 13 well-established monogenic PD genes in individuals of African ancestry were included. Data were analyzed separately in North African (NA)

Vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism in Egyptian multiple sclerosis patients.

One of the most common neurological illnesses in the world is multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS). MS has both a genetic and an environmental origin. In terms of environmental factors, vitamin D deficiency is one of the most important risk factors and closely connected with gene polymorphisms involved in vitamin D metabolism, transport, or activity. Since vitamin D activity requires a receptor-mediated response, any changes to the vitamin D receptor (VDR) may have an effect on the pathophysiology of the disease. In this study,

Evaluation of X chromosome inactivation in endemic Tunisian pemphigus foliaceus.

BACKGROUND: Almost 5% of the world's population develops an autoimmune disease (AID), it is considered the fourth leading cause of disability for women, who represent 78% of cases. The sex ratio when it comes to the most prevalent AID varies from 9:1 in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to 13:1 in endemic Tunisian pemphigus foliaceus (PF). METHODS: To test the potential involvement of skewed x-inactivation in the pathogenesis of Tunisian PF, we analyzed the methylation status of a highly polymorphic CAG repeat in the androgen receptor gene and evaluated the x chromosome inactivation (XCI) pa

Reproductive rights and population control in Zimbabwe.

The author argues that population control in Zimbabwe, in other developing countries, and even in developed countries is targeted at non-whites and at the poorer classes. She discusses fertility vaccines and male sterilization in this context, and makes the point that while the technology of population control flows from the North to the South, resources from the South are flowing North to maintain the economic status quo. "I think that the real population problem is the widening gap between a few greedy, irresponsible people, most of whom happen to be located in the North, and the rest of hum

A systematic review culturally adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CaCBT) for Arabic-speaking populations including North African subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for common mental disorders. However, most CBT protocols have been developed within Western cultural frameworks, which may limit their relevance for culturally diverse populations. Culturally adapted CBT (CaCBT) seeks to enhance treatment acceptability and effectiveness by integrating linguistic, cultural, religious, and contextual factors. Despite growing interest in culturally adapted interventions, evidence regarding Arabic-speaking populations, including North African subgroups, remains fragmented. METHODS: Following
