Primary infertility in nuclear industry employees: report from the nuclear industry family study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether men and women who are occupationally exposed to ionising radiation are at increased risk of primary infertility. METHODS: A cross sectional analysis of reproductive outcome was reported in an occupational cohort of nuclear industry workers from the Atomic Energy Authority, Atomic Weapons Establishment, and British Nuclear Fuels in the United Kingdom. Data on employment and radiation monitoring supplied by employers were linked to data obtained from self administered questionnaires sent to all current employees and a sample of past workers. A total of 5353 men a

Nuclear receptor 4A (NR4A) family - orphans no more.

The orphan nuclear receptors NR4A1, NR4A2 and NR4A3 are immediate early genes induced by multiple stressors, and the NR4A receptors play an important role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and disease. There is increasing evidence for the role of these receptors in metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological functions and also in inflammation and inflammatory diseases and in immune functions and cancer. Despite the similarities of NR4A1, NR4A2 and NR4A3 and their interactions with common cis-genomic elements, they exhibit unique activities and cell-/tissue-specific functions. Although endogen

[The nuclear family and social protection of children].

The nuclear family is the consequence and reflection of rapid industrialization of the country. It requires a wider safeguarding of infancy in the framework of more extensive social and care service structures. Kindergartens and nursery schools are the basic answers to child care, coupled with the network of independent institutions, and hospitals, out-patients centres and school medical services, and the local health unit, which supervises services in its district. Mention is also made of the measures still needed to ensure that kindergartens and nursery schools are available and efficient, a

Effects of Family Interventions on Social Capital: The Role of Nuclear Family Orientation.

Evidence stresses that family interventions mostly involve members of the nuclear family unit and therefore exclude other potentially significant individuals. This study hypothesizes that such a nuclear family orientation has unintended consequences for the development of family-based social capital in family interventions. This study was based on a sample of 48 parents enrolled in a family intervention program in Switzerland. Data were collected and analyzed at two time points using egocentric network analysis. The results showed that practitioners mainly involved parents and their children i

A novel family of plant nuclear envelope-associated proteins.

This paper describes the characterisation of a new family of higher plant nuclear envelope-associated proteins (NEAPs) that interact with other proteins of the nuclear envelope. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the family consists of three genes expressed ubiquitously (AtNEAP1-3) and a pseudogene (AtNEAP4). NEAPs consist of extensive coiled-coil domains, followed by a nuclear localisation signal and a C-terminal predicted transmembrane domain. Domain deletion mutants confirm the presence of a functional nuclear localisation signal and transmembrane domain. AtNEAP proteins localise to t

Heritability of Corneal Parameters in Nuclear Families With Keratoconus.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the heritability of corneal parameters obtained by Pentacam in nuclear families with keratoconus (KC). METHODS: A total of 82 patients with KC and their biological parents (n = 164) were recruited in the current study. All subjects underwent corneal tomography with Pentacam. Family units were analyzed to calculate the heritability of corneal parameters by linear mixed effects model using the R statistical software. RESULTS: The pachymetry at apex, pupil, and thinnest point were all significantly heritable at 43.26%, 42.63%, and 43.09%, respectively. T

Estimating the Heritability of Intelligence with a Nuclear Twin Family Design.

Intelligence, and the favorable life outcomes with which it is associated, are not shared equally between individuals or groups. In an endeavor to better understand the inequality, behavioral genetics (BG) have employed the classical twin design (CTD) to apportion the variability in the intelligence quotient (IQ) to genetic and environmental sources. Recent research has revealed that such parameter estimates are subject to bias: underestimating the influence of assortative mating, and nonadditive genetic effects. These biases are somewhat mitigated by the nuclear twin family design (NTFD). To

Financial Satisfaction in Blended and Nuclear Families: A Dyadic Perspective.

This study examines financial satisfaction among couples in blended and nuclear families using Waves 8-16 of the RAND Health and Retirement Study (2006-2022). Grounded in Becker's interdependent utility theory and informed by Hamilton's kin selection theory, this study integrates these frameworks to examine how differences in biological and relational ties may shape financial satisfaction within couples. Generalized structural equation models with ordered logistic regression were estimated within an actor-partner interdependence framework to examine both direct associations and cross-partner p

Toward a methodology for evaluating DNA variants in nuclear families.

The genetic underpinnings of most pediatric-cancer cases are unknown. Population-based studies use large sample sizes but have accounted for only a small proportion of the estimated heritability of pediatric cancers. Pedigree-based studies are infeasible for most human populations. One alternative is to collect genetic data from a single nuclear family and use inheritance patterns within the family to filter candidate variants. This approach can be applied to common and rare variants, including those that are private to a given family or to an affected individual. We evaluated this approach us

Anger, PTSD, and the nuclear family: a study of Cambodian refugees.

This study profiles the family-directed anger of traumatized Cambodian refugees, all survivors of the Pol Pot genocide (1975-1979), who were patients at a psychiatric clinic in Lowell, MA, USA. We focus on the nuclear family (NF) unit, the NF unit defined as the patient's "significant other" (i.e. spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend) and children. Survey data were collected from a convenience sample of 143 Cambodian refugee patients from October 2006 to August 2007. The study revealed that 48% (68/143) of the patients had anger directed toward a NF member in the last month, with anger directed towa

Bilateral dislocation of the mandible. 2 cases in a nuclear family.

Two cases of bilateral dislocation occurred in two brothers, aged 20 and 23 within a period of seventeen months. The junior one was the first victim in the month of April 1999 and the senior brother later in November 2000. The first was triggered by yawning whereas the second by vomiting. Different types of dislocation, diagnosis and management of dislocation is presented. The occurrence in two siblings raises the question of familial predisposition to dislocation.

Heritability of Alzheimer's disease plasma biomarkers: A nuclear twin family design.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a highly heritable disease (60%-80%). Amyloid beta (Aβ) 42/40, neurofilament light chain (NfL), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are plasma biomarkers for AD. Clinical biomarker research would be served by an understanding of the sources of variance in these markers. METHODS: Blood concentrations of Aβ42/40, NfL, and GFAP of twins and their families (monozygotic twins: 1574, dizygotic twins: 1266, other: 3657) were analyzed on the Simoa HD-X. Twin-family models were used to estimate proportional genetic contributions to the variance in bioma

From surface to nuclear receptors: the endocannabinoid family extends its assets.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) have long been known as mediators of several physiological functions, among which the best characterized are lipid metabolism, energy balance and anti-inflammation. Their rather large and promiscuous ligand binding site has been recently discovered to accommodate, among a plethora of lipid molecules and metabolic intermediates, endocannabinoids and their cognate compounds, specifically belonging to the Nacylethanolamine group. In fact, oleoylethanolamide, palmitoylethanolamide and probably anandamide bind with relatively high affinity to PPAR

Fetal death and congenital malformation in babies born to nuclear industry employees: report from the nuclear industry family study.

BACKGROUND: There is some concern about the genetic effects of exposure to low-level ionising radiation, but the evidence is sparse and conflicting. Most work has concentrated on cancer in offspring and little has been done on adverse reproductive outcome. We aimed to assess whether the offspring of men and women who are occupationally exposed to ionising radiation are at increased risk of fetal death and congenital malformation. METHODS: We analysed pregnancies reported by an occupational cohort of nuclear industry workers in the UK, employed at establishments operated by the Atomic Energy A

Role of the Orphan Nuclear Receptor NR4A Family in T-Cell Biology.

The nuclear orphan receptors NR4A1, NR4A2, and NR4A3 are immediate early genes that are induced by various signals. They act as transcription factors and their activity is not regulated by ligand binding and are thus regulated via their expression levels. Their expression is transiently induced in T cells by triggering of the T cell receptor following antigen recognition during both thymic differentiation and peripheral T cell responses. In this review, we will discuss how NR4A family members impact different aspects of the life of a T cell from thymic differentiation to peripheral response ag

Characterization of a novel tripartite nuclear localization sequence in the EGFR family.

Aberrant expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is present in many human tumors. Several reports have shown that EGFR is translocated into the nucleus during liver regeneration and in several types of cells and tissues such as placenta and thyroid. Nuclear EGFR is associated with transcription, DNA synthesis, and DNA repair activity and serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinoma and oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer. However, the nuclear localization sequence (NLS) of EGFR has not been extensively examined. In this study, we have shown that the juxtamembrane region of EG

Induction of pleckstrin by the Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 3 family.

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded nuclear antigens, EBNA-3, -4, and -6 (EBNA 3 family) are expressed in latently infected human B-cells and are involved in the transformation of lymphocytes by EBV. Human Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) dG75 cells which stably expressed either the complete EBNA 3 gene family or the vector alone were generated and changes in gene activity in these transfectants were assayed using the differential display of mRNA technique. For the first time, the human gene pleckstrin, which is thought to be involved in signalling and differentiation of hemopoietic cells, was found t

A cluster of four cases of meningococcal disease in a single nuclear family.

A cluster of four confirmed cases of meningococcal disease was seen in the same nuclear family across a 15-week period. The cases were three siblings and a parent and all recovered well. The first case was confirmed by meningococcal PCR only but the subsequent three cases were due to indistinguishable strains of serogroup B (B:NT:P1.19-1,15-11). Contact tracing was initially undertaken and reviewed in detail after each subsequent case. Antibiotic prophylaxis was administered to close family contacts on three separate occasions, including switching of antibiotic agents, with good compliance. Su

[Immunogenetic characteristics of nuclear families of adolescents with delayed sexual development].

The paper submits data on the antigenic composition of HLA system in members of nuclear families of adolescent boys presenting with the delay in sexual maturation. Positive and negative associations of particular antigens with sexual underdevelopment are stated. Estimated in the families was the highest incidence rate of gaplotypes A 28-B 40, A 28-B 8, A 1-B 40, and A 3-B 40. The authors come out with a suggestion that it might be possible to use the identified antigens in prognostication of delayed puberty.

Characterization of a family of nuclear and chromosomal proteins identified by a monoclonal antibody.

A monoclonal antibody (3C5) isolated from a mouse immunized with human chromatin stained the nuclei of all cultured cell types tested by indirect immunofluorescence. Experiments with HeLa and PtK1 cells demonstrated striking cell-cycle-related changes in the staining properties of the target antigen. A rapid increase in nuclear fluorescence was seen in prophase, with antigen located between the condensing chromosomes. In metaphase and anaphase cells antigen was present throughout the cytoplasm with the chromosomes apparently unstained. However, isolated metaphase chromosomes showed intense, pe
