BACKGROUND: Differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs) are the most common endocrine malignancies. Although they are generally associated with a favorable prognosis, some patients do not achieve complete remission after treatment. This study aimed to identify predictive factors for complete remission among Moroccan patients with DTCs.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients diagnosed with DTCs between 2004 and 2012 and followed at the Nuclear Medicine Department of Ibn Rochd Hospital. Associations between complete remission and various epidemiological and

BACKGROUND: Failure of radioactive iodine therapy (RAI) in patients with hyperthyroidism is not uncommon. A Second dose is usually needed if the first one failed. The purpose of this audit was to determine the efficacy of RAI in patients with hyperthyroidism at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study. A single observer reviewed the records of all patients who received I131 therapy for hyperthyroidism between 23rd April, 2010 and 23rd November, 2017 in conjunction with their pre- and post-treatment thyroid function tests. Results of their thyroid ultrasound were r

This paper demonstrates an application of Cost-Benefit Analysis as an aid in capital investment medical decision making. Specifically, a cost-benefit analysis is used to compare three nuclear cardiology instruments (i.e. Nuclear Stethoscope, Mobile Camera/Computer and Fixed Cardiac Computer). The study examined both non-quantitative and quantitative comparative factors. Results of the study show: (1) Conversion of the non-quantitative factors into a numerical system (via medical opinion) greatly delineates the relative merits of each instrument. (2) Simulating the stochastic economic and equip

Nuclear medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic medical specialty based on the administration of radiopharmaceuticals emitting ionizing radiation (IR). In this context, healthcare professionals are exposed to low doses of radiation during their activity. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of occupational exposures in nuclear medicine in France, based on data from the 2023 IRSN and 2024 ASN reports, and to put them into perspective with those of other medical or industrial sectors, as well as with natural background exposure. Occupational exposures in nuclear medicine remain ve

The application of the 1985 Ionizing Radiations Regulations and Approved Code of Practice to a typical Nuclear Medicine Department has been considered. References to the Regulations are given so that their implications in a given department may be examined. The radiopharmacy, radioisotope dispensary and injection room will need to be Controlled Areas. It will also be necessary to designate Controlled Areas if radiopharmaceuticals are injected in imaging rooms or on wards. Waiting rooms will need to be Controlled Areas. The area around individual patients will, however, not need to be Controlle

Radiopharmaceuticals are a special group of drugs since many are eventually prepared in the hospital and the nuclear medicine department is responsible for meeting quality criteria such as sterility, radionuclide, radiochemical and chemical purity of these drugs. We tested 266 preparations of 14 different radiopharmaceuticals from commercial kits for their radiochemical purity. Only four compounds showed deficiencies in labelling (anti-granulocyte MAb, HIG, HMPAO, MAG3, altogether 18 preparations). All of them were 99mTc-pharmaceuticals with a relatively low tin content of the kit. The reasons

A change in ideas concerning the use of radioactive iodine in the treatment of hyperthyroidism has revived interest in this therapy. We report the results of an enquiry conducted in all French nuclear medicine units regarding their activity in 1985 and compare these results with those of a similar enquiry conducted simultaneously in Belgium. The amount of radioactive iodine administered in France was one-half of that administered in Belgium. Regional differences were quite marked in France, probably due to different schools of thought. Diffuse hyperthyroidism accounted for two-thirds of the in

Occupational radiation protection in nuclear medicine is complicated by ambient radiation fields that vary both spatially and temporally. This variability arises from routine radiopharmaceutical handling and from patients who act as temporary mobile radiation sources after administration. Passive dosimetry provides cumulative information but cannot resolve short-term fluctuations arising during routine operations. This study integrated fixed-location optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry with time-resolved Geiger-Müller monitoring to characterise spatial variations in ambient dose

In the last years, the technology for producing the important medical radionuclide technetium-99m by cyclotrons has become sufficiently mature to justify its introduction as an alternative source of the starting precursor [99mTc][TcO4]- ubiquitously employed for the production of 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals in hospitals. These technologies make use almost exclusively of the nuclear reaction 100Mo(p,2n)99mTc that allows direct production of Tc-99m. In this study, it is conjectured that this alternative production route will not replace the current supply chain based on the distribution of 99Mo/9

Herein, we analyze the dose distribution and factors influencing the occupational internal irradiation exposure to iodine-131 (131I) for nuclear-medicine staff in Jiangsu Province. A total of 472 individuals in 56 hospitals were monitored during the three-year monitoring period, and 131I was detected in 170 of them. The highest thyroid activity level detected across all cases was 24.83 kBq, with the average thyroid activity being 130.3 Bq. The average annual dose of irradiated staff members was 0.339 mSv. The primary factors related to the detection rate of 131I in the irradiated staff members

In this study, the authors investigated the short-term (i.e., 1-yr) health effects of low-level occupational and personal exposure to ionizing radiation in a hospital setting. Thyroid function, lung function, platelet count, and leukocyte classification were obtained for 142 ionizing radiation operators. In addition, individual exposure doses were measured. The mean annual cumulative dose in 25 exposed subjects was 6.0 +/- 10.1 millisieverts. The highest exposure ratio among 20 of 41 (49%) radioisotope operators was significantly higher than for other ionizing radiation workers. Abnormal leuko

Risk management is a major concern for health organizations. In hospitals, it concerns both medical and occupational risks, particularly those related to exposure to ionizing radiation. Medical personnel represent 70% of workers exposed to ionizing radiation. The highest doses in the order of a few mSv are recorded in nuclear medicine departments. Nuclear medicine health professionals are thus exposed, in the context of their work activity to daily low doses-though their effects remain uncertain. In the face of this uncertainty, the precautionary approach prevails in the field of radiation pro

Rules and regulations of federal agencies and state radiation protection programs provide the bases for hospital policy regarding radiation safety for nurses. Nursing administrators should work with the radiation safety officer at their institutions to ensure that radiation exposures to staff nurses will be as low as reasonably achievable and that special consideration will be given to pregnant nurses. Nurses' fears about their exposure to radiation can be greatly reduced through education.
