Chromosome aberrations in workers of nuclear-power plants.

The frequencies of chromosome aberrations in 135 workers from nuclear- power plants were compared with those in 135 age-matched controls. A total of 135,000 cells was scored. The frequencies of dicentric chromosome were 1.67 x 10(-3) in the exposed group and 0.49 x 10(-3) in the control group and those of chromosome-type deletion were 3.33 x 10(-3) and 1.10 x 10(-3), respectively. The frequencies of all types of chromosome aberrations in the exposed subjects were higher than those in the control group, but no significant trend of dose-dependent increase was observed when only the exposed group

A proposal for a differentiated radiation protection program for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants compared to the operation of nuclear power plants.

While fundamental radiological protection standards remain consistent for operating and decommissioning nuclear power plants (NPPs), the unique challenges of decommissioning require a specialized program. This study analyzes the radiological characteristics of decommissioned NPPs and proposes a tailored protection program. Key findings indicate that although total radioactive inventory decreases, radiation dose rates in work areas can fluctuate significantly during the removal and movement of structures and components. The risk of internal exposure and alpha contamination increases due to fine

Epidemiological evidence of childhood leukaemia around nuclear power plants.

A few reports of increased numbers of leukaemia cases (clusters) in children living in the vicinity of nuclear power plants (NPP) and other nuclear installations have triggered a heated debate over the possible causes of the disease. In this review the most important cases of childhood leukaemia clusters around NPPs are described and analyzed with special emphasis on the relationship between the environmental exposure to ionizing radiation and the risk of leukaemia. Since, as indicated, a lifetime residency in the proximity of an NPP does not pose any specific health risk to people and the emi

Consequences of the nuclear power plant accident at Chernobyl.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR), on April 26, 1986, was the first major nuclear power plant accident that resulted in a large-scale fire and subsequent explosions, immediate and delayed deaths of plant operators and emergency service workers, and the radioactive contamination of a significant land area. The release of radioactive material, over a 10-day period, resulted in millions of Soviets, and other Europeans, being exposed to measurable levels of radioactive fallout. Because of the effects of wind and rain, the radioactive nucli

Melanoma screening in a hungarian nuclear power plant.

The industrial use of the ionizing radiation (IR) particularly stresses the safe work, regular health control is inevitable. Since previous occupational cohorts reported contradictory data on the incidence of melanoma among nuclear industry workers, and in few publications significant increase of it has been described, our clinic was requested by the industry to screen malignant skin tumours among the workers of a power plant. Within a year we have investigated 556 workers, 275 females and 281 males. Out of them 283, majorly males had been officially confirmed as to be employed at hazardous, b

Thyroid disorders in employees of a nuclear power plant.

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland is a potential target organ for radiation-related damage. The aim of this analysis was to investigate the association between occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the risk of autoimmune thyroid disease as well as thyroid nodules and dysfunction in workers of a former nuclear power station. METHODS: Seventy-one male power station workers 38 to 57 years of age who had been exposed to a lifetime dose in the upper allowed range (accumulated lifetime dose 70 to 400 mSv) were compared to a population-based sample of 670 males who were not exposed to occupati

Chromosome aberrations in employees from fossil-fueled and nuclear-power plants.

Chromosome aberrations were scored in 59 persons from fossil-fueled plants, in 89 persons from nuclear-power plants and in 23 controls. A significant increase in acentric chromosome fragments and dicentric chromosomes compared to the control group was observed in both types of workers. Moreover, the number of abnormal cells was significantly greater in workers of conventional plants than in those of nuclear-power plants. When adjusted for loss of lymphocytes according to a half-life of 3 years, this difference was also significant for the number of dicentric chromosomes observed. A significant

The impacts of putting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in the line of fire.

The armed forces of the Russian Federation captured the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station after their invasion to Ukraine in February 2022. In early August 2022, reports about shelling of the station ignited fear of a nuclear accident. Simultaneously, the disruption in the generation of electricity from nuclear energy has fueled a notable increase in the price of oil. The compounding effect of these developments on global health includes acute and chronic radiation exposure, food insecurity due to the potential contamination of the environment and the rise in the cost of essential commodities

[Worker heat disorders at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant].

OBJECTIVES: Ever since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, every day about 3,000 workers have been working to repair the situation. The frequent occurrence of heat disorders has been a concern for the workers wearing protective clothing with poor ventilation. We have been analyzing the heat disorder problem since the accident in order to come up with a solution to prevent future heat disorder incidents among Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident clean-up workers. METHODS: From March 22 to September 16, 2011, the Fukushima Labor Bureau assessed 43 cases of nuclear power plant wo

Mortality among workers at a nuclear power plant in the United States.

A second follow-up of 9,000 workers at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (MD, USA) identified 346 deaths in the years 1969-88, 101 of which were attributed to malignant neoplasms. The original study had the primary purpose of assessing the feasibility of studies of workers based upon individual plant and Nuclear Regulatory Commission records. The average, cumulative, occupational dose through 1984 was low, only 21 mSv, but ranged up to 470 mSv, with 12 percent of the workers receiving more than 50 mSv. Mortality from most causes of death was low and there was a deficit of deaths from dise

Possible genetic damage in the Czech nuclear power plant workers.

The aim of our study was to identify occupational risk of irradiation exposure in the Czech nuclear power plant workers. We analyzed levels of chromosomal aberrations, a well-known biomarker of early biological effects and a predictor of cancer risk. We applied the conventional method of cytogenetic analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH, whole chromosome painting for chromosomes 1 and 4, combined with a pancentromeric probe) to three groups: 123 subjects in the Temelin nuclear power plant (2 years in use), 114 subjects in the Dukovany nuclear power plant (20 years in use), and

Cancer incidence around the Nuclear Power Plant Jaslovské Bohunice.

The total cancer incidence in our district has been increasing during years 1986-1995. Standardised cancer incidence in district Trnava in 1994 to European population was 278.12 per 100,000 inhabitants. Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Jaslovské Bohunice is situated in the centre of the district of Trnava. From 1978 five reactors have started to operate and four still work. NPP produces approximately 40% of whole electrical energy consumption in Slovakia. There are approximately 250,000 people in the area of 30 km around the NPP. The main part of this area belongs to Trnava district. Objectives of wo

Increased Screening Rates for Thyroid Cancer Among Residents Living Near Nuclear Power Plants.

Frequent screening for thyroid cancer has been suggested as a probable explanation for the observed high risk of thyroid cancer in nuclear power plant (NPP) areas. We aimed to compare thyroid cancer screening rates of residents living near NPPs to those of the general population. This study utilized data from two national survey-based studies in 2016 and in 2014, respectively, for residents (n = 1,200) living in administrative districts within 5 km of NPP sites as the interest group, and the general population (n = 228,712) including distant-living residents (n = 19,100) in administrative dist

Nuclear power plants and childhood leukaemia: lessons from the past and future directions.

In the 1980s, leukaemia clusters were discovered around nuclear fuel reprocessing plants in Sellafield and Dounreay in the United Kingdom. This raised public concern about the risk of childhood leukaemia near nuclear power plants (NPPs). Since then, the topic has been well-studied, but methodological limitations make results difficult to interpret. Our review aims to: (1.) summarise current evidence on the relationship between NPPs and risk of childhood leukaemia, with a focus on the Swiss CANUPIS (Childhood cancer and nuclear power plants in Switzerland) study; (2.) discuss the limitations of

Residential proximity to nuclear power plants and cancer incidence in Massachusetts, USA (2000-2018).

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between residential proximity to nuclear power plants and ZIP code-level cancer incidence among Massachusetts residents. METHODS: We assessed proximity of Massachusetts ZIP codes to nuclear power plants using an inverse-distance weighted metric. We obtained cancer incidence data (2000-2018) from the Massachusetts Cancer Registry. We applied two approaches: (1) longitudinal Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) Poisson regression to evaluate yearly incidences for all cancers combined, and (2) cross-sectional log-linear Poisson regression for site-specif

Tellurium behaviour in the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident.

The behaviour of tellurium radionuclides in the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident was examined to determine if it is consistent with the current understanding of tellurium chemistry, and whether there is any evidence of tellurium dispersal by species other than aerosols (e.g., vapours). Previous speciation studies, hot-cell experiments, in-reactor experiments and the transport from the Chernobyl reactor accident indicated that tellurium would behave primarily as a particulate species that condensed at high temperature, although the initial chemical species may have transformed to

Cryptorchidism after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident:causation or coincidence?

Cryptorchidism (undescended testes) is among the most common congenital diseases in male children. Although many factors have been linked to the incidence of cryptorchidism, and testicular androgen plays a key role in its pathogenesis, the cause remains unknown in most cases. Recently, a Japanese group published a speculative paper entitled, "Nationwide increase in cryptorchidism after the Fukushima nuclear accident." Although the authors implicated radionuclides emitted from the Fukushima accident as contributing to an increased incidence of cryptorchidism, they failed to establish biological

Glycophorin A mutant frequency in radiation workers at the nuclear power plants and a hospital.

We studied to assess the validity of the glycophorin A (GPA) mutant assay as a biological marker of the cumulative effects of chronic low doses of ionizing radiation. In 144 nuclear power plants workers and 32 hospital workers, information on confounding factors, such as age and cigarette smoking, was obtained through a self-administered questionnaire. The information on physical exposure doses was obtained from the registries for radiation exposure monitoring and control at each facility. The range of cumulative exposure doses were 0-12.02cGy. GPA mutant assay was performed by the BR6 method
