Municipal water quantities and health in Nunavut households: an exploratory case study in Coral Harbour, Nunavut, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Access to adequate quantities of water has a protective effect on human health and well-being. Despite this, public health research and interventions are frequently focused solely on water quality, and international standards for domestic water supply minimums are often overlooked or unspecified. This trend is evident in Inuit and other Arctic communities even though numerous transmissible diseases and bacterium infections associated with inadequate domestic water quantities are prevalent. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to explore the pathways by which the trucked water distributio

Solving the housing crisis in Nunavut, Canada.

In Canada, there are vast differences between the state of accommodation/housing, health, social inequalities, education and economic conditions for people in the northern and southern regions of the country. Overcrowding in Inuit Nunangat is a direct result of the promises made by past government policy that led to Inuit people settling in sedentary communities in the North on the understanding that they would be provided with social welfare. However, these welfare programmes proved to be either insufficient or non-existent for Inuit people. Therefore, Inuit are living in overcrowded homes in

Translocated dogs from Nunavut and the spread of rabies.

BACKGROUND: Investigations of rabid animals that cross provincial/territorial boundaries are resource intensive and complex because of their multi-jurisdictional and multi-sectoral nature. OBJECTIVE: To describe the multi-jurisdictional responses to two unrelated rabid puppies originating from Nunavut. METHODS: A descriptive summary of the investigations following the identification of a rabid puppy in Alberta (August 2013) and another in Saskatchewan (December 2014). RESULTS: These investigations involved public health and agriculture authorities in five provinces/territories, as well as t

Clams and potential foodborne Toxoplasma gondii in Nunavut, Canada.

The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii exposure in Inuit living in Nunavut (20%) is twice that of the US (11%); however, routes of exposure for Inuit communities in North America are unclear. Exposure to T. gondii in humans has been linked with consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish that can accumulate environmentally resistant oocysts. Bivalve shellfish, such as clams, are an important, nutritious, affordable and accessible source of food in many Northern Communities. To date, presence of T. gondii in clams in Northern Canada has not been reported. In this study, we tested for T. gondii pre

Lessons from management of syphilis in Nunavut, Canada, 2012-2020.

BACKGROUND: Nunavut, part of Inuit Nunangat, is a geographically vast territory in northern Canada, with a population of over 38,000 people. Most (85%) of the population identify as Inuit. Nunavut has experienced a significant rise in heterosexual infectious syphilis cases since 2012. Management of communicable diseases, including syphilis, is challenging due to high staff turnover and long delays in specimen transport times. Social determinants of health are also an important contributor. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiology and program elements for infectious syphilis from 2

Initial management of an outbreak of the HTLV-1 virus in Nunavut, Canada.

BACKGROUND: HTLV-1 is a retrovirus known to be endemic in Japan, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. HTLV-1 infection is rare in Canada. The last known cases prior to the present cluster in Nunavut occurred in 1993, when three Aboriginal patients with neurological symptoms in British Columbia were found to be infected with HTLV-1. The Dept. of Health and Social Services in Nunavut became aware of the presence of this virus in the Nunavut population in early June, 2005 when an individual infected with HTLV-1 died from Acute T-cell leukemia. STUDY DESIGN: A report of the interventions done by t

Heavy metal accumulation in arctic hares (Lepus arcticus) in Nunavut, Canada.

Accumulation of cadmium, mercury, lead, copper and zinc was studied in muscle, liver and kidney of 9 adult and 7 juvenile arctic hares (Lepus arcticus), collected in 2003 in the southwestern part of Nunavut, Canada. Our objective was to determine the level of heavy metal accumulation, and distribution among age groups and tissue. Concentrations of all metals varied among tissues, and concentrations of Cd, Hg and Zn were higher in adults compared to juveniles. We found correlations in metal content among tissues, and among metals in kidneys. We also found the hares to have low concentration of

The latent tuberculosis infection cascade of care in Iqaluit, Nunavut, 2012-2016.

BACKGROUND: A remote arctic region of Canada predominantly populated by Inuit with the country's highest incidence of tuberculosis. METHODS: The study was undertaken to describe the latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) cascade of care and identify factors associated with non-initiation and non-completion of LTBI treatment. Data were extracted retrospectively from medical records for all patients with a tuberculin skin test (TST) implanted in Iqaluit, Nunavut between January 2012 and March 2016. Associations between demographic and clinical factors and both treatment non-initiation among and t

Deposition of brominated flame retardants to the Devon Ice Cap, Nunavut, Canada.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) can be transported to Arctic regions via atmospheric long-range transport, however, relatively little is known about their deposition to terrestrial environments. Snow cores from the Devon Ice Cap in Nunavut, Canada served to determine the recent depositional trends of BFRs. Snow pits were dug in 2005, 2006, and 2008. Dating using annual snow accumulation data, ion chemistry, and density measurements established that the pits covered the period from approximately 1993 to spring 2008. Samples were extracted under clean room conditions, and analyzed using GC-ne

Inuit Women's Voices from Nunavut, Canada: Informing Perinatal Support Needs and Priorities.

Background/Objectives: Evacuation policies for childbirth in Nunavut, Canada, continue to profoundly shape the lives of Inuit women, their families, and communities. The evacuation policy is known to disrupt kinship networks and contribute to the erosion of Inuit birthing knowledge. Addressing a gap in Inuit-led understandings of sexual and reproductive health priorities, this paper presents findings from research conducted in 2024 with Kivallirmiut women ('People of' in Inuktitut is miut; Kivallirmiut means people of the Kivalliq Region. Nunavummiut means people of Nunavut, and Arviarmiut mea

Assessment of dysglycemia risk in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut: using the CANRISK tool.

INTRODUCTION: The Public Health Agency of Canada adapted a Finnish diabetes screening tool (FINDRISC) to create a tool (CANRISK) tailored to Canada's multi-ethnic population. CANRISK was developed using data collected in seven Canadian provinces. In an effort to extend the applicability of CANRISK to northern territorial populations, we completed a study with the mainly Inuit population in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. METHODS: We obtained CANRISK questionnaires, physical measures and blood samples from participants in five Nunavut communities in Kitikmeot. We used logistic regression to t

Head circumference values among Inuit children in Nunavut, Canada: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Inuit children from Nunavut have been observed to have high rates of macrocephaly, which sometimes leads to burdensome travel for medical evaluation, often with no pathology identified upon assessment. Given reports that World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts may not reflect all populations, we sought to compare head circumference measurements in a cohort of Inuit children with the WHO charts. METHODS: We extracted head circumference data from a previous retrospective cohort study where, with Inuit partnership, we reviewed medical records of Inuit children (from birth to ag

HIV/AIDS Risk and Prevention Issues Among Inuit Living in Nunavut Territory of Canada.

AIM: HIV infections occur across the Arctic but their incidence among aboriginal populations varies vastly. At the time this research was initiated there were no data on their occurrence, risk of HIV/AIDS or preventive strategies among Inuit living in the Nunavut territory of Canada. This review is the first to assess the risk of HIV infection among Inuit and evaluate current prevention strategies among Canadian-Inuit populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The contents of this article are based on the author's own research, undertaken during 3 visits to the Canadian Arctic and the published lite
