[Nurse anesthetist in France].

We present the system of nurse anesthetist (Infirmier Anesthésiste Diplômé d'Etat: IADE) in France to the community of Japanese anesthesiologists. This French system with 70 years' history is older than the Japan Society of Anesthesiologists itself. There are 7000 nurse anesthetists in France now and the number of nurse anesthetists increases by 450-500 each year. Training to become a nurse anesthetist requires at least two years' experience as a general nurse and the general nurse must pass an examination after two years' special training in an anesthetistic nurse school to acquire the nation

Predictors of Substance Use Risk in Nurse Anesthetists.

BACKGROUND: Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are exposed daily to highly addictive substances and stressful work environments, placing them at risk for substance use disorders (SUDs). Previous research, which is scarce, indicated that drugs of choice were opioids and propofol. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of SUD risk using the World Health Organization Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. METHOD: From June to July 2020, an online survey was sent via the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Research Survey Servi

Valvular heart disease: a review for nurse anesthetists.

Those who do not regularly participate in cardiac surgery are often anxious when faced with the patient with valvular dysfunction. The need for periodic review by anesthetists is critical for quality patient care. A review of the physiology and anesthetic management of aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, aortic insufficiency, mitral regurgitation, and mitral valve prolapse is presented.

AANA Journal course: update for nurse anesthetists--thoracic trauma.

The lungs are remarkably resilient organs and injuries to the lungs, whether from blunt or penetrating trauma, are not often the source of mortality. Instead, associated injuries to the heart, great vessels, chest wall, and other critical structures account for most morbidity and mortality associated with thoracic trauma. Hypovolemic shock, impending cardiac failure, neurological injury, and compromised respiratory function may all be present in a single individual with thoracic trauma whose injuries require immediate surgery. Anesthesia care for the thoracic trauma patient often involves cont

Clinical education experiences: perceptions of student registered nurse anesthetists.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences and attitudes of student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) related to clinical instruction. This descriptive study used a cross-sectional survey method with a regionally stratified randomly selected sample of SRNA members from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists data bank. A total of 2,673 SRNAs were invited by email to respond to an online, 54-item questionnaire; 696 SRNAs participated. Verbal abuse was reported by almost 70% of SRNA participants, but fewer experienced sexual harassment (13%), physical abuse (14%), or ra

AANA journal course. Update for nurse anesthetists. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a potentially fatal condition composed of hyperthermia, extrapyramidal symptoms, autonomic nervous system disturbances, and altered levels of consciousness. Although uncertainty exists about its cause, most studies suggest it is the result of dopaminergic deficiency in the central nervous system, most commonly caused by neuroleptic medications. Excessive dopaminergic blockade occurs most commonly in psychiatric patients receiving neuroleptic medications, but many antiemetic medications used in anesthesia also have been implicated. Promethazine (Phenergan

Simulation for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists: Common Pediatric Anesthesia Complications.

Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are required by the Council on Accreditation to provide anesthetics to a minimum of 30 patients ages 2-12 years and 10 patients younger than 2 years. Pediatric anesthesia can prove to be stressful because children are at higher risk for morbidity and mortality during the perioperative period compared with adults. Simulation allows SRNAs the opportunity to review and develop skills in a safe and supportive environment. The purpose of this project was to provide a high-fidelity pediatric simulation for SRNAs prior to their pediatric rotation to impro

Student nurse anesthetists' learning during clinical practice: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice is essential for student nurse anesthetists to integrate theory with practical skills; however, the demanding clinical environment can impact both stress and learning outcomes. Responsibilities and expectations differ across healthcare systems, and research in the Swedish context remains limited. Addressing this gap is essential for understanding how clinical practice contributes to the development of professional readiness and competence. This study, therefore, aimed to describe the learning experiences of students and newly graduated nurse anesthetists, with a f

Resident Registered Nurse Anesthetists' Use of Cognitive Enhancers in the U.S.

Graduate students, including medical students, use cognitive enhancer (CE) medications with or without legal prescription to aid academic performance despite little evidence that they improve performance in individuals without a medical diagnosis and subsequent prescription. However, there is limited information on CE medication use, with or without legal prescription, by resident registered nurse anesthetists (RRNAs). This cross-sectional survey assessed prevalence of CE medication use with or without legal prescription and its potential predictors (depression, anxiety, Attention Deficit Hype

AANA Journal course: update for nurse anesthetists--magnesium homeostasis and deficiency.

Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation in the human body and serves as an obligate cofactor in approximately 300 essential enzymatic cellular reactions. Magnesium is crucial for the generation and use of adenosine triphosphate and is required for oxidative phosphorylation. A wide variety of internal and external stresses have been found to increase a person's requirement for dietary magnesium. Magnesium deficiency may develop during a variety of pathological states, or it may have an iatrogenic basis. Magnesium deficiency complicates the management of hypertension and cardi

Nurse anesthetists' perceptions and experiences of managing emergence delirium: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: This study employs a descriptive phenomenological approach to investigate the challenges anesthesia nurses face in managing emergence delirium (ED), a common and complex postoperative complication in the post-anesthesia care unit. The role of nurses in managing ED is critical, yet research on their understanding and management strategies for ED is lacking. AIM: To investigate anesthetic nurses' cognition and management experiences of ED in hopes of developing a standardized management protocol. METHODS: This study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach from qualitative

Clinical hypnosis in anesthesia: Knowledge and training needs among Moroccan nurse anesthetists.

Despite increasing evidence proving the efficacy of clinical hypnosis as an adjunct therapy to anesthesia in multiple surgical contexts, attitudes and perception of anesthesia personnel remain the principal barrier to its large-scale implementation. This study aims to describe and explore the level of knowledge in terms of clinical hypnosis use in anesthesia among Moroccan nurse anesthetists working in public sector health. A 21-item questionnaire translated into French for a prior study was prepared in electronic form. Using snowball sampling, we recruited nurse anesthetists from Morocco to a

AANA Journal course: update for nurse anesthetists--genetic testing for malignant hyperthermia.

The "gold standard" for the determination of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia has long been the caffeine-halothane-contracture test, which is costly and invasive. As the workings of molecular genetics are better understood, research is being applied to finding the causative gene for malignant hyperthermia. Once this gene is identified, genetic testing will involve a much simpler, less invasive test that uses blood samples to detect susceptibility. To reach this goal, researchers have been attempting to identify the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) mutations responsible for malignant hyperth

AANA journal course: update for nurse anesthetists--current concepts in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Developmental strides in cardiopulmonary resuscitation were paralleled by acquired knowledge of pulmonary and cardiac physiology. The evolution of the current recommendations for cardiopulmonary resuscitation have evolved over the past 40 years as a result of human trial and error and have been authenticated through laboratory research and clinical experience. Current research efforts in cardiopulmonary resuscitation are examining the mechanisms of blood flow during external cardiac massage and techniques to optimize myocardial and cerebral perfusion during the resuscitative period. AANA Journal Course: Update for nurse anesthetists--part-4--transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

Aortic stenosis is the most frequently acquired heart disease, and the prevalence is rising because of the aging population. If the disease is left untreated, survival in symptomatic patients averages only 2 to 3 years. Surgical aortic valve replacement is the only definitive treatment, yet 30% of elderly patients are not considered candidates because the presence of comorbidities makes the risk of sternotomy and cardiopulmonary bypass prohibitively high. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an innovative, high-tech, less invasive alternative. The procedure is usually performed usi

A qualitative study of emergency management ability of anesthetist nurses.

BACKGROUND: In China, most nurse anesthetists enter the profession from a general nursing background, often lacking specific expertise in anesthesia, procedural competencies, and Emergency management skills initially. Moreover, the absence of a uniform standardized training framework for new nurse anesthetists hinders their ability to respond to crisis and provide comprehensive anaesthesia care. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to exploring the components of anesthesia nurses' emergency management abilities and to provide a foundation for establishing a comprehensive and systematic emergency manag

The State of Nurse Anesthetist Practice and Policy: An Integrative Review.

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 prompted the Institute of Medicine to release The Future of Nursing report to help guide the necessary changes in nursing to accommodate millions of newly insured individuals. A key point of the campaign was for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to practice at the fullest extent of their licensure to meet the needs of the newly insured population. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) experience the most restricted scope of practice among APRNs. An integrative review was conducted to examine CRNA practice and policy since The

Nurse anesthetists' perceptions of heat conservation measures in connection with surgery - a phenomenographic study.

BACKGROUND: To minimize the risk of perioperative hypothermia, it is recommended that healthcare professionals be familiar with heat conservation measures and use passive and active warming methods, in line with international guidelines. However, there is a low level of adherence perioperatively to the use of heat conservation measures. To understand why, there is a need to capture the nurse anesthetists' perspective. The aim is to describe nurse anesthetists' perceptions of heat conservation measures in connection with surgery. METHODS: An inductive descriptive design with a phenomenographic
