STUDY QUESTION: How were the logbook and curriculum for the Nurses and Midwives Certification Programme of ESHRE developed?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The logbook and corresponding curriculum for the ESHRE Nurses and Midwives Certification Programme were based on an extensive literature review, an international expert panel, and a survey of Belgian and Dutch nurses and midwives (N&M) working in reproductive medicine (RM).
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: ESHRE has been running a certification programme for N&M working in RM since 2015. To the best of our knowledge, clinical practice guidelines for nursing/midwif

INTRODUCTION: Implementing national home birth guidelines for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) in the United States may facilitate a common approach to safe home birth practices. Guidelines are evidence-based care recommendations for specified clinical situations that can be modified by individual providers to meet specific client needs.
METHODS: Following a review of home birth guidelines from multiple countries, a set of home birth practices guidelines for US CNMs/CMs was drafted. Fifteen American Midwifery Certification Board, Inc. (AMCB)-certified home birth mi

In 1990 a symposium was held by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Abortion Federation to address the national shortage of physician abortion providers. One symposium recommendation was that nurse-midwives be trained to perform first-trimester legal abortions under physician supervision. A national mail survey was conducted to determine the attitudes of nurse-midwives toward performing abortion and related procedures. One-half of the nurse-midwives who were members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives as of October 1991 were polled, and 1,208 question

This article examines how the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) utilized nurse-midwives to respond to antepartum emergencies such as preterm birth, eclampsia, malpresentation, and hemorrhage in the women of Appalachia in the years 1925 to 1939. Particular attention is given to the preparation that nurse-midwives received during their midwifery education to prevent and respond to emergencies. Using traditional historical research methods and primary source material from the FNS papers in the Special Collections, University of Kentucky Libraries, Lexington, Kentucky, this article describes the nurs

Iain Chalmers and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Oxford, England, developed a comprehensive listing of perinatal care procedures shown to reduce the frequency of adverse outcomes during pregnancy and childbirth. This list was used as a framework for a pilot study conducted in 1992 that reviewed similarities and differences in opinion and practice style between certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and obstetrician/gynecologists. Twenty CNMs and 57 obstetrician/gynecologists who were active clinical practitioners in San Diego commented on 24 items drawn from Chalmers' work. The CNMs were m

Much has been written about the need for help for the overworked obstetrician. Two obstetricians delivering over 500 babies annuallay had insufficient time for their gynecology practice. Two nurse-midwives were employed and in the first year they delivered 61 per cent of those patients who delivered vaginally. All normal patients had the privilege of choosing their accoucheur; patients, nurse-midwives, and obstetricians were very well pleased with the team approach.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum screening for glucose intolerance among women with recent histories of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is important for identifying women with continued glucose intolerance after birth, yet screening rates are suboptimal. In a thorough review of the literature, we found no studies of screening practices among certified nurse-midwives (CNMs). The objectives of our study were to estimate the prevalence of postpartum screening for abnormal glucose tolerance and related care by CNMs for women with recent histories of GDM and to identify strategies for improvement.

Nurse-midwives provide significant health care to underserved and vulnerable women, yet there is limited information about the nature of nurse-midwifery practices and compensation for services. This study reports the results of a Colorado statewide survey of nurse-midwives (N = 217). Electronic survey was utilized to detail practice in seven areas: demographics, type of practice, compensation, leadership, legislative priorities, teaching involvement, and practice satisfaction. Responses (N = 114) were analyzed using SPSS 13.0. Results found wide variation in compensation and practice types. Res

Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) occurs when autonomous professionals work together to achieve shared system-level or patient-centered goals and is a promising strategy to improve perinatal care. Prior research suggests that when midwives and physicians collaborate, there is increased access to perinatal services, improved care outcomes, and more efficient use of limited health care resources. However, it is not always clear how IPC is defined, operationalized, demonstrated, or hindered. This state of the science review examines how IPC between certified nurse-midwives or certified midwiv

The number of women in the United States choosing to give birth at home has risen substantially in the past decade, creating an increased need for understanding of the evidence regarding the provision of midwifery care to women and families considering this option. The safety of home birth has been evaluated in observational studies in several industrialized nations, including the United States. Most studies find that women who are essentially healthy at term with a singleton fetus and give birth at home have positive outcomes and a lower rate of interventions during labor. Although some studi

Healthcare resources are stretched perilously thin and the demand for primary healthcare services has never been greater. Despite this demand for service, relatively little is known about the practice environment of primary healthcare providers, particularly certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), where workforce surveys frequently include these specialists within the broader nurse practitioner category. A distinct professional discipline, nurse-midwives are one type of primary care provider recommended to enhance access to services. The objective of this study was to understand the nature of the nur

The purpose of this study was to assess the practice of a group of non-nurse midwives by comparing the outcomes of their deliveries to the standard of hospital-based physicians. This was done by means of a matching procedure designed to equate the populations on major medical risk factors. The first phase of the study used all physicians and found major differences favoring the midwives. The second phase of the study used the least interventionist half of the physician group and found minimal differences between midwives at home and physicians in the hospital. It is suggested that excessive in

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely certified nurse-midwives in the United States follow contemporary cervical cancer screening guidelines. A survey was sent to 264 randomly selected certified nurse-midwives. Survey questions included demographics and clinical scenarios addressing initiation, frequency, and cessation of screening. Responses were received from 60% of the sampled certified nurse-midwives who had valid mailing addresses; 127 were eligible for the analytic sample. Many nurse-midwives initiate cervical cancer screening earlier than guidelines recommend; 72% would

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance that is observed in the beginning of, or first acknowledged during pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM is estimated to be approximately 15% globally and is expected to increase due to growing numbers of overweight and obesity in women in their reproductive age. The nursing management of GDM in terms of lifestyle modifications (exercise, diet and nutrition) and the taking of diabetes medication, if required, and adherence thereto is crucial to prevent maternal and neonatal-perinatal complications. This

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use during pregnancy can have a variety of harmful consequences on the fetus. Lifelong effects include growth restriction, characteristic facial anomalies, and neurobehavioral dysfunction. This range of effects is known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). There is no amount, pattern, or timing of alcohol use during pregnancy proven safe for a developing embryo or fetus. Therefore, it is important to screen patients for alcohol use, inform them about alcohol's potential effects during pregnancy, encourage abstinence, and refer for intervention if necessary. However,

OBJECTIVES: We examined the impact on patient safety if nurse practitioners (NPs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and physician assistants (PAs) were permitted to provide aspiration abortions in California.
METHODS: In a prospective, observational study, we evaluated the outcomes of 11 487 early aspiration abortions completed by physicians (n = 5812) and newly trained NPs, CNMs, and PAs (n = 5675) from 4 Planned Parenthood affiliates and Kaiser Permanente of Northern California, by using a noninferiority design with a predetermined acceptable risk difference of 2%.
