CE: Original Research: Antineoplastic Drug Administration by Pregnant and Nonpregnant Nurses: An Exploration of the Use of Protective Gloves and Gowns.

UNLABELLED: : Background: Many antineoplastic (chemotherapeutic) drugs are known or probable human carcinogens, and many have been shown to be reproductive toxicants in cancer patients. Evidence from occupational exposure studies suggests that health care workers who have long-term, low-level occupational exposure to antineoplastic drugs have an increased risk of adverse reproductive outcomes. It's recommended that, at minimum, nurses who handle or administer such drugs should wear double gloves and a nonabsorbent gown to protect themselves. But it's unclear to what extent nurses do. Beyond evidence-based nursing: tools for practice.

AIM: This commentary shares my views of evidence-based nursing as a framework for practice, pointing out its limitations and identifying a wider base of appraisal tools required for making good clinical decisions. BACKGROUND: As the principles of evidence-based nursing take an increasingly greater hold on nursing education, policy and management, it is important to consider the range of other decision-making tools which are subordinated by this approach. EVALUATION: This article summarizes nursing's simultaneous reliance on and critique of evidence-based practice (EBP) in a context of inadeq

Why do young nurses leave their organization? A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Nurse turnover is a major problem all over the world. It is known that young nurses who constitute the new nurse labour force are more likely to leave their organization, especially in their first year. However, qualitative studies that approach the problem from the perspective of young nurses and focus on the reasons for their decision to leave their organization are limited. AIM: To understand the reasons for young nurses' leaving their organization and determine their experiences, focusing on their point of view. METHODS: The study had a descriptive qualitative design and was

[Clinical supervision--experience of 10 nurses of a 2-year process-oriented supervision].

Many patients in swedish hospital care today are older, more physically and mentally ill and in need of much care. Despite this there is a strong urge for higher cost-effectiveness and shorter hospital stays. Both these trends are often reported to be important sources of stress and burn-out among nurses. One way of reducing such effects among nurses could be clinical supervision. The present study is a result of one two-year long process-oriented supervision programme for nurses, led by the authors. The method in this study consisted of semi-structured interviews of 10 nurses joining the prog

Social support in the workplace: nurse leader implications.

The state of the science as it relates to the stress-mediating role of social support in the health care work environment is explored. The ability to build a nursing leadership workforce is dependent upon a type of social support mechanism that mediates the inherent stress that comes along with managerial positions. Independent of the inevitable work-related stress associated with the nurse manager role, social support provided to current and aspiring nurse leaders is assumed to assist with coping and thriving in the work environment.

How to make research happen: working with staff.

Implementing a research project in a clinical nursing unit requires the researcher to gain cooperation and support from administration, physicians, and the nursing staff. In this article the site coordinators from the Transition of the Preterm Infant to an Open Crib research-utilization project share their strategies for generating support, energizing the staff nurses, assuring compliance with the study, resolving problems, and bringing the project to closure. Many of the strategies used can be applied to other research projects by nurse researchers interested in using clinical nursing units a

Isopropyl alcohol inhalation as treatment for nausea and vomiting.

In my practice as a recovery room nurse, I had observed anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists wave an opened alcohol preparation pad under a patient's nose when he or she complained of nausea. When asked, "Why?'' the response often was, "Because it works.'' The following article describes the use of inhalation of isopropyl alcohol as a treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting. Because alcohol swabs are so readily available, and certainly less expensive than some of the newer antiemetics on the market, this simple nursing intervention was worth investigating.

Paradigms of Canadian nurse managers: lenses for viewing leadership and management.

To an extent unprecedented in history, healthcare is a complex and human enterprise. Generating the complexity are stakeholders with more diverse perspectives, needs, and agendas, and greater knowledge and vested interest than ever before. Given their pivotal position between the direct-care environment and external stakeholders, nurse managers can no longer rely on the hierarchy, authority, and linear thinking afforded by traditional management; in order to accomplish they must lead people by working through them. Ironically, when needed most, there is a lack of consensus in the literature ab

Does administrative support negate the consequences of nurse abuse?

AIM: To assess the relationship between disruptive/abusive situations and the 'intention to leave' nursing. BACKGROUND: While every nurse deserves to feel safe in his or her working environment, nurse abuse remains a common occurrence worldwide. Only when hospitals are safe, is retention enhanced and patient care improved. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1053 nurses. RESULTS: Almost 70% of nurses experienced stressful disruptive/abusive situations that were mainly caused by patients/families. The majority felt skilled in dealing with these situations, yet around 40% cons

How to NAPS: A Discussion of the Safety and Implementation of a Nurse Administered Propofol Sedation (NAPS) Program.

Anesthesia shortages impact patient accessibility to endoscopy procedures. The administration of midazolam and fentanyl by a nurse is an accepted practice of delivering procedural sedation, though there is still controversy around the safety of a nurse administered propofol sedation (NAPS) program. Applicable professional organizations have provided statements supporting NAPS by a trained and competent nurse under the direction of an appropriately credentialed proceduralist. Research demonstrates the safety of NAPS in comparison to procedural sedation provided by anesthesia personnel or admini

A theory-based approach to nursing shared governance.

BACKGROUND: The discipline of nursing uses a general definition of shared governance. The discipline's lack of a specified theory with precepts and propositions contributes to persistent barriers in progress toward building evidence-based knowledge through systematic study. PURPOSE: The purposes of this article were to describe the development and elements of a program theory approach for nursing shared governance implementation and to recommend further testing. METHOD: Five studies using multiple methods are described using a structured framework. The studies led to the use of Lipsey's meth

Cues-to-Action in Initiating Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender-Related Policies Among Magnet Hospital Chief Nursing Officers: A Demographic Assessment.

This study explored Magnet Chief Nursing Officers' cues-to-action initiating lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT)-specific policies. Homonegativity has a negative effect on employee recruitment and retention and patient satisfaction. Little has been known about what cues-to-action might initiate LGBT inclusive training. Surveys were mailed to 343 Chief Nursing Officers. Cues-to-action survey was used to assess what inspires initiation of LGBT training. Demographic surveys were used to assess what impact variables might have on cues-to-action. Age, sex, religiosity, location, and regio
