Teaching evidence-based practice in undergraduate nursing education: why research must move beyond the classroom.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is positioned as a core expectation of undergraduate nursing education, yet the research used to justify curricular approaches remains uneven in quality and relevance. Current literature frequently reports improved student knowledge, skills and attitudes following EBP teaching, but there is limited evidence that these gains are sustained in practice. AIM: To offer a critical reflection on the current direction of research on teaching EBP in undergraduate nursing education and to identify priorities for a more clinically meaningful research agenda. The future of cancer nursing in Europe: Addressing professional issues in education, research, policy and practice.

Cancer nursing has evolved to meet the demands of rising cancer incidence, newer and more complex treatment options, and the emergence of specialist roles supporting patients from pre-diagnosis, through treatment, survivorship and end of life care. Nurses are involved in direct and in-direct care of people at risk of, and living with and after cancer in diverse contexts. As a result, nurses are positioned to have a significant influence on the processes and outcomes of cancer care, through education, research, policy, practice and leadership. However, nursing and cancer care face challenges, a

Embedding Service User Experience ('Experts by Experience') Into Undergraduate Mental Health Nursing Education: A Co-Production Research Project.

Internationally, the need to have service user involvement (the 'voice' of recovery journeys) as an established and significant feature on the landscape of professional development has been widely discussed in the area of mental health nursing (MHN) education for over a decade. Service user involvement contributes to a different understanding, bringing 'new' ways of knowing in nursing education and potentially new ways of practicing within mental health services. The objective of this co-produced research was to investigate the current local 'state of play' of service user involvement in MHN s

An Investigation of Professional Integrity in Pre-registration Nurse Education: A Modified Grounded Theory Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Acting with integrity is a central part of nursing practice. However, literature shows that professional integrity can be absent and where this is present it can face challenges. Governmental Inquiries have revealed deficits in the expression of nursing values which underpin professional integrity, in particular caring, compassionate and competent practice that maintains the dignity of patients. Evidence also suggests that it cannot be taken for granted that pre-registration education will have a positive impact on student nurses' ability to practice with integrity. OBJECTIVES: Th

Are pediatric practicum experiences a beneficial component of registered nurse education programs? Nursing students and new graduates weigh in: A qualitative descriptive research study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives requires baccalaureate registered nurse education programs to deliver a generalist curriculum meeting entry-level competencies. To fulfill this requirement, nursing programs ensure the provision of practice opportunities for hands-on experience with patients of all ages through practicum. Current literature suggests the limited availability of clinical placement opportunities in pediatric settings. This may reduce the opportunity for nursing students to become acquainted with the unique needs of infants, children, and a

Positive Aspects and Potential Drawbacks of Implementing Digital Teaching/Learning Scenarios in Health Professions Using Nursing Education as an Example: A Research Report from Germany.

BACKGROUND: Learning arrangements in health care profession education are increasingly taking place in digital environments. Virtual reality (VR) in nursing education, as a digital element, is the subject of controversial debate. On one hand, it supports the authenticity of case studies by adding realistic perspectives and information. On the other hand, the costs of developing and maintaining software and hardware hinder its long-term implementation. Based in the German context, our aim is to promote the adoption of innovative digital methods in nursing education and to offer invaluable exper

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa incidence and survival: 5-year experience of the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (DebRA) nurse educator, 2007 to 2011.

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) is a particularly devastating type of epidermolysis bullosa, especially in the newborn period. Data about the number of new cases of JEB in the United States were collected from the records of the Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association of America (DebRA) nurse educator. Seventy-one children with JEB were reported to have been born in the 5 years between 2007 and 2011, reflecting an incidence of at least 3.59 per million per year, significantly higher than previously estimated (2.04 per million). There was a high prevalence of morbidity and

Angoff Method of Setting Cut Scores for High-Stakes Testing: Foley Catheter Checkoff as an Exemplar.

The Angoff method is a commonly used and legally defensible method for setting passing or cut scores for high-stakes examinations. It also can be used for setting passing scores on clinical skill checklists. Two variations of the Angoff method were compared with a traditional and arbitrary 75% passing score, using a Foley catheter insertion checklist as an exemplar. Both Angoff methods produced slightly lower scores than our traditional scoring; because of "must pass" steps on our checklist, 12 of 13 students still failed the evaluation. The project uncovered multiple variations of checklists

Virtual Interprofessional Learning Due to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated sweeping changes in a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program's approach to distance-accessible learning. Prioritizing student learning and safety, we developed a new alternative model for individualized simulation. METHOD: The scenario created for a student to deliver an unexpected diagnosis of trisomy 21, or Down syndrome, to a postpartum mother was redesigned to take place using web-conference technology. RESULTS: We successfully transitioned the planned in-person individualized simulation for NNP students delivering an unexpected diagnosis

Beyond "what works": Realist evaluation as a transformative approach to building evidence in nurse education.

The persistent "what works" question in nurse education research conceals a conceptual trap. We seek universal interventions that reliably produce outcomes regardless of context, building an evidence base where promising interventions repeatedly fail to transfer across settings. Critical realism and its methodological offspring, realist evaluation, offers a transformative alternative from the social sciences. Rather than asking "does this work," realist evaluation asks: for whom, in what circumstances, through what mechanisms, producing which outcomes? This Big Ideas paper introduces the Conte

Competency-Based Education as a Catalyst for Inclusion: Practical Pathways for Supporting Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Nurse educators have a professional and ethical responsibility to revise curricula to be inclusive and competency-based. PROBLEM: Inclusive education benefits all students, including neurodivergent and disabled learners, and reduces reliance on individually awarded accommodations. Many nurse educators lack skills for inclusive instruction. APPROACH: This article presents a practical framework that integrates Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, and Competency-Based Education.
