OBJECTIVE: To define the causes of death in a nursing home population.
METHODS: The study selected a 508-bed nursing home with standard medical records, regular meetings concerning death certificates and 12 medical doctors in charge of supervising or issuing death certificates. The procedure standard (2006 death certificates) was considered consistent enough to undergo the analysis. The collected data were gender, age, cause(s) of death and underlying disease(s). The statistical analysis compared data between the two genders and two age ranges (< 75 years and > 75 years).
RESULTS: There were

Increasing numbers of stroke patients with profound functional, psychological, and cognitive impairments are receiving rehabilitation in Medicare skilled nursing facilities. These facilities vary substantially in the patients they admit, the volume and intensity of therapy they provide, and the outcomes they achieve. Facilities with an orientation toward rehabilitation and community discharge providing more intensive therapy services by a wider range of skilled professionals have better outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To review the literature on sleep disturbances in nursing home settings. Although 50% of older adults complain of sleep difficulties, increased reports of sleep disturbances are generally associated with poor health. After controlling for comorbidities that often contribute to poor sleep, studies have shown that primary sleep disturbances in healthy older adults are, in fact, rare. Although common in older adults, sleep complaints are even more prevalent in elders living in nursing homes and the sleep disturbances experienced by institutionalized older adults are more severe. Facto

The care provided to the residents of the Alzheimer's unit of the Pont-de-Veyle nursing home follows four main ethical principles: dignity, autonomy, beneficence and non-maleficence. The team demonstrates flexibility with regard to the washing and dressing of the residents, meal times and the organisation of activities. It does not resort to restraint. The respect of the person's dignity and privacy is maintained not only during nursing care but in all other aspects of their life.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify and evaluate drug utilisation in a sample of Dutch nursing homes.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of computerised medication data of 2355 residents aged 65 years and over from six nursing homes in the Netherlands was performed. For each therapeutic drug group, the number of users was determined. The ten therapeutic groups used most frequently were investigated further. For these, patient characteristics, use of therapeutic subgroups, the average daily dosages and the chronicity of drug use were determined. Chronicity was expressed as the percentage of treatment days d

Using secondary data, an analysis was done of the prevalence of inappropriate clinical care among 3,149 Virginia Medicaid nursing home residents. Six types of inappropriate care were examined: the underprovision of skilled nursing care, physical rehabilitation and routine medical care; and the overuse of psychotropic drugs, physical restraints and urinary catheterization. Thirty-two (32) percent of the residents received inappropriate care in at least one care area and 7% received inappropriate care in two or more areas. Residents who received the most inappropriate care were more dependent in

UNLABELLED: We conducted the first study to determine fracture incidence in institutionalized elderly people in East Asia. Fracture incidence was generally higher than in the general population but was not for all fracture types. Specific fracture prevention strategies for institutionalized people are needed. Ethnic differences in fracture incidence are also discussed.
INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of fractures in nursing homes in Japan, where fracture is becoming an increasingly problematic health issue.
METHODS: We conducted a cohort study with a 1-year

Fall-related injuries in nursing homes for the aged are frequent and cost-intensive. Their iatrogenic causes are well known and avoided in modern geriatric institutions. We examined all falls in an institution during the period of 19 months. Patients who carry out daily tasks on a semi-independent level were most at risk. The main risk-factor was dementia. Medication did not prove a major risk-factor. At 37% p. a. the risk of falling was lower than in previous studies. This was due to a restriction on benzodiazepines with short term effects, minimising of neuroleptics, diuretics and other type

BACKGROUND: Patient safety culture concerns leader and staff interaction, attitudes, routines, awareness and practices that impinge on the risk of patient-adverse events. Due to their complex multiple diseases, nursing home patients are at particularly high risk of adverse events. Studies have found an association between patient safety culture and the risk of adverse events. This study aimed to investigate safety attitudes among healthcare providers in Norwegian nursing homes, using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire - Ambulatory Version (SAQ-AV). We studied whether variations in safety attit

Problems with drugs administration in nursing homes. A survey in a convenience sample of nursing homes was the occasion to collect data on the frequency of some common problems related to the administration of drugs to dementia residents. Some common problems such as crushing tables and opening capsules, the concealment of drugs in food and beverage to mask their bitter taste, the unavoidable administration of insulin after meals are discussed.

Hand hygiene (HH) is recognized as an effective way to decrease transmission of infections. Little research has been conducted surrounding HH in nursing homes (NHs). In this research, deficiency citations representing potential problems with HH practices by staff as identified in the certification process conducted at almost all US NHs were examined. The aims of the study were to identify potential relationships between these deficiency citations and characteristics of the NH and characteristics of the NH environment. We used a panel of 148,900 observations with information primarily coming fr

This study determined the prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the home environment of 37 confirmed cases of scabies and in five nursing homes with scabietic patients. Dust samples from 44% of infested patients' homes contained scabies mites. Live mites at the time the dust samples were analyzed were present in 64% of these homes. Live mites were recovered most often from bedroom floors or overstuffed chairs and couches. The density of live and dead mites ranged from 1 to 5 mites/0.1 gm of dust or 1 to 9 mites/m2 of surface area sampled. The presence of mites in fomites coupled with survival and
