AIM: To discuss the multi-centre qualitative methodology as a unique design, articulate its guiding paradigm/theoretical perspectives, and highlight its methodological and methodical issues. A secondary objective is to generate further scholarly discourse regarding the multi-centre approach within the broader qualitative research tradition.
DESIGN: Methodological discussion.
FINDINGS: Rather than an emphasis on only experiences, the multi-centre approach is presented as a unique design which also focuses on uncovering why a phenomenon or problem exists and perceptions regarding the phenomeno

BACKGROUND: The longitudinal qualitative research (LQR) approach is an emerging design in nursing research which focuses on examining changes in experiences over specified timepoints. While some authors have tied this approach to a specific qualitative tradition such as phenomenology and case study, other authors have associated it with two or more qualitative methodologies. Yet, others have also argued it is untied to a specific qualitative tradition. Thus, there is palpable confusion regarding whether it is a methodology or merely a method. Additionally, its guiding paradigm or philosophical

Since its expansion in the 1980s, nursing research has aimed to develop knowledge to produce evidence-based results that can help nurses to guide and improve decision-making regarding patient care. Nursing research is based on a rigorous methodology that meets the criteria determined by the scientific method. However, nursing research predominantly adopts approaches such as gap-spotting and problematization that remain centred on existing knowledge about phenomena. Gap-spotting seeks to identify unanswered questions in the literature, whereas problematization challenges the assumptions underly

OBJECTIVES: to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Leg Ulcer Measurement Tool to Brazilian Portuguese.
METHODS: methodological study involving the steps of initial translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, expert panel and pretest. For analysis by the expert committee, the content validity index was calculated and in the pretest for practicality, the agreement rate was calculated. Satisfactory agreement was considered when > 0.8 and 80%, respectively.
RESULTS: the initial steps of translation were satisfactorily developed and there was little disagreement between the tra

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methodological quality of quantitative lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender nursing research from 2000 to 2010. Using a key word search in Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, 188 studies were identified and 40 met the criteria, which included descriptive, experimental, quasi-experimental, or observational (case control, cohort, and cross-sectional) design. The methodological quality of these studies was similar to that reported for medical and nursing educational research. The foci of these lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans

AIM: This study used Q methodology to identify cognitive types of research learning barriers among intensive care unit (ICU) clinical nurse specialist (CNS) trainees and to uncover the attributional structure underlying these perceptions, thereby informing type-specific training.
BACKGROUND: The research capacity of clinical nurse specialists is a core marker of their professional development. Existing studies have mainly used conventional questionnaires to assess the severity of barriers, without revealing how different trainees perceive the same barriers, which limits the ability to target

The Angoff method is a commonly used and legally defensible method for setting passing or cut scores for high-stakes examinations. It also can be used for setting passing scores on clinical skill checklists. Two variations of the Angoff method were compared with a traditional and arbitrary 75% passing score, using a Foley catheter insertion checklist as an exemplar. Both Angoff methods produced slightly lower scores than our traditional scoring; because of "must pass" steps on our checklist, 12 of 13 students still failed the evaluation. The project uncovered multiple variations of checklists

Qualitative analysis is problematic from two perspectives, which exist in the science and art debate [Tesch, R., 1990. Qualitative Research. Analysis types and software tools. The Falmer Press, London; Robson, C., 1993. Real World Research. Blackwell, Oxford]. The science view claims that the absence of clear and agreed analysis processes, which can be found in the quantitative domain, attracts labels to qualitative analysis of intuitive artistry and personal journeys which are considered 'unscientific'. This thinking remains dominant despite the growth of systematic qualitative analysis suppo

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) allows risk- and anxiety-free practice, mediated by consistent objective feedback.
PURPOSE: This study evaluated the usability of a VR game system for sterile catheterization practice. Participant enjoyment, engagement, likelihood to practice, and comfort using VR are reported.
METHODS: Thirty-one students and faculty tested a VR game using Oculus Rift devised to allow practice of placing a urinary catheter in a virtual patient. Data were collected via an electronic survey using the System Usability Survey (SUS) and a User Reaction Survey (URS).

This project was implemented to determine if the combination of video recording and reflection could enhance student learning of specific nursing skills. Students' answers to open-ended questions validated the importance of iPad videos for their skill improvement. The findings confirmed that iPad videos provided an effective tool for students to evaluate their performance and reflect on methods for improvement.

Occurrences of incivility in nurse educator-staff nurse relationship studies are limited. A qualitative methodology (n = 6) was used to investigate nurse educators' perceptions of the main stressors for nurses during educational experiences. Identification of uncivil traits as seen by nurse educators and perceived role of nursing leaders in addressing incivility in the workplace were also identified.

This case study describes the experiences of a novice correctional nurse researcher's application of the recommended strategies from the correctional literature to improve the conduct of research in a correctional institution. An innovative booster intervention was implemented and evaluated as a pilot study in a state correctional institution. Correctional nurse researchers encounter many challenges when conducting research in a correctional facility. This case study shares challenges that persisted and concludes by recommending ways to strengthen and improve on learned strategies proposed by

Focus groups are a well-known qualitative approach to gathering data in health science research. The literature on focus groups, however, primarily discusses adults as subjects. Unfortunately, the scant reports of studies using children as participants in focus groups have not described their methods in detail. This article discusses the use of children (age 6-12) in focus groups, and highlights methodological considerations in this approach, with particular attention to the integration of developmental principles. Focus groups with children can capture their perspectives, original ideas, and

The goal of this study was to improve prelicensure nursing students' attitudes toward and self-efficacy related to delivering nursing care to patients with auditory hallucinations. Based on the Hearing Voices That Are Distressing curriculum, 87 participants were instructed to complete 3 tasks while wearing headphones delivering distressing voices. Comparing presimulation and postsimulation results, this study suggests that the simulation significantly improved attitudes toward patients with auditory hallucinations; however, self-efficacy related to caring for these patients remained largely un

Simulation in nursing is a flourishing area for nurse educators' practice. Defined as learning that amplifies, mimics or replaces real-life clinical situations, simulation aims to give students opportunity to reason through a clinical problem and make decisions, without the potential for harming actual patients. Educators in nursing are contributing to simulation learning in diverse and creative ways. Yet much of their craft is not being widely disseminated because educators are not always confident in publishing their work. This paper aims to stimulate creative development in simulation by pr

The nursing assessment, and the contribution it makes to the identification of an individual's health needs, is often a complex and multidimensional process. This is always true when the individual concerned has a severe learning disability. The nurse should develop the assessment in partnership with individuals who may experience major communication difficulties, or have unappreciated levels of perceptual or cognitive dysfunction. They may also live with the ongoing possibility that their affective or behavioural responses may be misinterpreted as 'challenging behaviour'. This case study focu

BACKGROUND: Standardized time allotments are typically imposed for administration of nursing tests. There is little evidence to guide the determination of time allotment. When time allotted for tests is too limited, construct irrelevant variance in test scores may be introduced and the reliability of tests may be negatively impacted.
METHOD: For test administration, we establish a standard time allotment and offer all students the option of extended time.
RESULTS: Many of the students use extended time, reporting that extended time reduces stress. Program outcomes have not been negatively af

To an extent unprecedented in history, healthcare is a complex and human enterprise. Generating the complexity are stakeholders with more diverse perspectives, needs, and agendas, and greater knowledge and vested interest than ever before. Given their pivotal position between the direct-care environment and external stakeholders, nurse managers can no longer rely on the hierarchy, authority, and linear thinking afforded by traditional management; in order to accomplish they must lead people by working through them. Ironically, when needed most, there is a lack of consensus in the literature ab
