Temporary nursing staff - cost and quality issues.

AIM: This paper is a report of a comparative study of temporary and permanent staff work activity, cost and quality of care. BACKGROUND: Temporary nurse staffing can consume significant proportions of the health service wages bill, and this is unlikely to fall owing to recruitment and retention problems, high sickness absence and the tendency for staff to work 'casually'. If temporary workers are here to stay, then what impact do they have on inpatient care? For example, do ward nursing quality and costs change when temporary staff are employed? METHOD: Ward patient dependency, nursing activ

Nursing staff induced repositionings and immobile patients' spontaneous movements in nursing care.

The aim of this study was to investigate nursing staff induced repositionings and the patients' spontaneous movements during the day and night among older immobile patients in nursing care. Furthermore, the aim was to identify factors associated with the nursing staff induced repositionings and the patients' spontaneous movement frequency. An observational cross-sectional design was used. Spontaneous movements among patients (n = 52) were registered continuously using the MovinSense monitoring system. The nursing staff documented each time they repositioned the patient. Patients spontaneous mo

Communicating with staff nurses: support or hostility?

Communication researchers specializing in social support determine factors that influence and make up supportive encounters in the hospital environment. Effective communication strategies provide a vital dyad's link between nurse managers and staff nurses. Thus, supportive relationships are formed that can ease stressful situations and encourage innovative ideas.

Incivility in the hospital environment: the nurse educator-staff nurse relationship.

Occurrences of incivility in nurse educator-staff nurse relationship studies are limited. A qualitative methodology (n = 6) was used to investigate nurse educators' perceptions of the main stressors for nurses during educational experiences. Identification of uncivil traits as seen by nurse educators and perceived role of nursing leaders in addressing incivility in the workplace were also identified.

[Nursing homes: a source of increasing concern. Behavior assessment by the nursing staff].

In recent times the need for physical care of residents of Dutch old people's homes has clearly increased. This is strongly related to the ageing of the population of these homes as well as to the introduction of legal measures concerning the admission of new residents. Staff members have also noted an increase in the mental and social problems of residents. In this article we describe a rating scale devised for the assessment of psychosocial problems in a home for the aged. The staff completed this scale and an ADL scale four times at three-month intervals. The prevailing problems appear to b

Psychosocial health risks among nursing staff working in shifts.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are one of the professional groups most exposed to psychosocial risks. Excessive responsibilities, time pressure, the need to make quick decisions, shift work, lack of adequate rest, contact with death and human suffering - all these factors can significantly affect the mental state and result in the development of health problems among nursing staff. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted among 193 nurses working at the University Clinical Hospital No. 2 of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. Participation in the study was anonymous and voluntary. The st

Staff-assisted nursing home haemodialysis: patient characteristics and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The number of elderly patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis (HD) in the nursing home (NH) setting is growing; however, little published data exists on this group of patients. METHODS: We describe our experience with 271 patients undergoing staff-assisted HD in the NH setting from 1 January 2001 to 30 June 2004. Acceptance into the programme required that the patients were mentally responsive, haemodynamically stable without sepsis and not be considered terminal or in hospice. RESULTS: Mean age at entry was 70.5+/-12.1 years, 53% were female, 54% were white and 34% black. Main

Resident behavior and staff distress in the nursing home.

Newly enacted Federal regulations have focused increasing attention on the use of psychoactive drugs and on the treatment of disruptive behavior in the nursing home. To study the interaction between resident behavior and staff distress in nursing homes, we measured the frequency of seven types of behavior problems among 346 residents of intermediate care facilities who were receiving some form of psychoactive medication. Nurses were interviewed on two shifts to determine their perception of the frequency and severity of each behavior in each patient as well as the level of distress it caused a

Agency staff utilization in nursing homes: patterns and concerns.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The persistent shortage of direct care workers across the long-term services and supports system has worsened since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This shortage resulted in nursing homes (NHs) relying more heavily on agency staff to maintain a stable workforce. This study examines patterns of agency staff utilization and associated concerns reported by NH administrators. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2023 Ohio Biennial Survey of Long-Term Care Facilities were used to report utilization patterns and concerns related to the use of agency-provided cert

[Practice of hypnosis for hospital staff by the psychiatric nurse].

Hypnosis has been around for a long time, and is now accepted as a mind-body practice that complements the treatment process. Within our hospital structure, we have set up hypnosis sessions for hospital staff. These "times for oneself" enable patients to mobilize their internal resources. These practices help to legitimize hypnosis as a complementary form of nursing care.

Managing asthma in the community: a guide for nursing staff.

Asthma is an inflammatory condition which affects all age groups and causes significant and unecessary morbidity and mortality. Appropriate management will depend on making the correct diagnosis and offering suitable medication through a device that the patient can use. Where indicated, self management through the use of asthma action plans should be encouraged.

Public violence, staff harassment and the wellbeing of nursing staff: an analysis of national survey data.

Instances of physical violence from members of the public and non-physical harassment from colleagues are highly prevalent in the health-care workforce and can be damaging to both staff and patients. While policy has tended to focus on the more visible problem of public violence, little is known about which of the two behaviours is the most damaging. This study compared the consequences of public violence and staff harassment for wellbeing in two large samples of English nurses. The results revealed that while both types of aggression were related to decreased levels of staff wellbeing, staff

Attitudes toward death in nursing staff: the role of resilience.

BACKGROUND: Nurses frequently care for patients at the end of life, yet many lack adequate preparation to manage the associated emotional challenges. Attitudes toward death influence both the quality of end-of-life care and nurses´ own psychological well-being. Although resilience has been identified as a potential protective factor, its role in shaping attitudes toward death among nursing professionals remains insufficiently explored. This study examined the role of resilience in attitudes toward death and analyzed personal and occupational factors associated with these attitudes prior to the

Staff-to-resident abuse in nursing homes: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse in long-term care is an important public health concern with social, health-related, and economic implications. Staff-to-resident abuse is of particular interest since institutions should protect residents' rights and prevent harm. To provide an up-to date comprehensive overview of staff-to-resident abuse in nursing homes, we performed a scoping review considering types of abuse, their prevalence and associated factors, descriptions, experiences, and preventive interventions. METHODS: We performed a scoping review following the framework provided by Arksey and O'Malley
