The imagos and nymphs of Siphlonurus davidi (Navás, 1932) are described for the first time. The adult has colourful wings and cross veins, the MP is forked asymmetrically at its base, a long cubital area is present with more intercalaries, and it has a relatively simpler penis and larger hindwings compared to its congeners. The venation and genitalia show that it is a plesiomorphic species in the genus. A key to the Asian species of Siphlonurus with coloured wings is provided in conclusion.

BACKGROUND: Ixodes scapularis ticks are medically important arthropod vectors that transmit several pathogens to humans. The observations of morphological abnormalities, including nanism, missing leg, extra leg, and gynandromorphism, have been reported in these ticks. In this study, we report the presence of two anuses in a laboratory-reared I. scapularis nymph.
RESULTS: Larval ticks were allowed to feed on mice and to molt to nymphs. Two anuses were observed in one of the freshly molted nymphs. Stereo and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of two anuses in one nymph within a

BACKGROUND: Pentastomiasis is a rare zoonotic disease caused by pentastomids. Despite their worm-like appearance, they are commonly placed into a separate sub-class of the subphylum Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. However, until now, the systematic classification of the pentastomids and the diagnosis of pentastomiasis are immature, and genetic information about pentastomid nylum is almost nonexistent. The objective of this study was to obtain information on pentastomid nymph genes and identify the gene homologues related to host-parasite interactions or stage-specific antigens.

Coxiella burnetii (Derrick) Philip, the causative agent of Q fever, is mainly transmitted by aerosols, but ticks can also be a source of infection. Transstadial and transovarial transmission of C. burnetii by Hyalomma lusitanicum (Koch) has been suggested. There is a close relationship between this tick species, wild animals and C. burnetii but the transmission in a natural environment has not been demonstrated. In this study, we collected 80 engorged nymphs of H. lusitanicum from red deer and wild rabbits. They moult to adults under laboratory conditions and we feed them artificially through

BACKGROUND: Eugenol is a botanical monoterpene that hyperactivates the blood-sucking bug Triatoma infestans, and permethrin is a pyrethroid with a strong triatomicide effect. In the present work, we tested the hypothesis that eugenol-hyperactivated nymphs of T. infestans pick up more insecticide, and then become intoxicated faster, than non-hyperactivated nymphs when exposed to a permethrin-treated surface.
RESULTS: Values of knockdown time 50% (KT50) for third-instar T. infestans exposed to a paper impregnated with permethrin were obtained under the following situations: (a.i.) immediately a

Dragonfly nymphs are aquatic and breathe water using a rectal gill. However, it has long been known that the nymphs of many species appear to possess the ability to breathe air, either during their final instar when they leave the water prior to metamorphosis, or during periods of aquatic hypoxia. The aerial gas exchange associated with these activities has not been quantified. This study used flow-through respirometry to measure the rate of aerial CO2 release (V̇CO2) from dragonfly nymphs as a proxy for their aerial gas exchange, both across development and in response to progressive aquatic

Nasopharyngeal linguatuliasis known as Halzoun or Marrara syndrome occurs following ingestion of raw or undercooked viscera, including lymph nodes, liver and lung of infected animals. The present study was aimed to investigate the behavioral changes induced by ingestion of Linguatula serrata nymphs in rats. For this purpose, 24 rats were divided into four groups and orally ingested with 0 (control), 15, 30 and 60 L. serrata nymphs, respectively. Sneezing, mouth and tongue movements and mouth opening numbers were counted and the duration of mouth and nose grooming was measured at 10-min blocks

Ixodes scapularis can be infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., Babesia microti, and Rickettsia spp., including spotted-fever group Rickettsia. As all of these microorganisms have been reported in Maryland, the potential for these ticks to have concurrent infections exists in this region. To assess the frequency of these complex infections, 348 I. scapularis nymphs collected in 2003 were screened for these microorganisms by PCR with positives being confirmed by DNA sequencing. Borrelia burgdorferi was detected in 14.7% of nymphs. Anaplasma phagocytophil

AbstractAfter 13 or 17 years underground, periodical cicada nymphs come aboveground to molt into adulthood. Observers have long noted the strikingly directional orientation of nymphs toward trees on which they molt and have speculated on possible mechanisms to account for these movements. Through a combination of observational, experimental, and modeling studies, we demonstrate that cicada nymphs use skototaxis, or movement toward darkness, to reach their targets. Emergent nymphs walked directly toward isolated trees, regardless of initial compass direction or time of day, traveling only 15% f

Ixodes ricinus is the most common hard tick species in Europe and an important vector of pathogens of human and animal health concerns. The rise of high-throughput sequencing has facilitated the identification of many tick-borne pathogens and, more globally, of various microbiota members depending on the scale of concern. In this study, we aimed to assess the bacterial diversity of individual I. ricinus questing nymphs collected in France using high-throughput 16S gene metabarcoding. From 180 dragging-collected nymphs, we identified more than 700 bacterial genera, of which about 20 are abundan

Insect silk glands exhibit diverse origins, including epidermal, labial, and Malpighian tubule-derived structures. Polymitarcyidae mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera) are known to secrete silk for constructing and lining their tunnels. However, the organ responsible for silk production in this ancient insect lineage is poorly understood. This study provides the first histological, histochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of the Malpighian tubules in Polymitarcyidae (Campsurus truncatus, Campsurus sp., and Tortopsis canum), identified as the likely source of their silk. We found specialized cells

Aradidae are known for their remarkably long stylets, coiled at rest in the anterior part of the head. However, previous reports indicated that at least some species lacked stylets during the first nymphal instar. A more detailed examination of Aradus betulae 1st-instar nymphs showed that their mandibular and maxillary stylets are abnormally short, not coiled, improperly interlocked, and clearly non-functional. The anteclypeus is relatively small and its internal diverticulum, which accommodates the stylet coil in the older stages, is vestigial. In contrast, the labium, labrum, food canal, and

Our aim was to reveal morphological features of first-generation Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus hybrids (nymphs and adults) obtained under laboratory conditions for further study of natural populations of these species in sympatry foci. In 65 nymphs of three groups I. ricinus (23 specimens), I. persulcatus (21 specimens), and hybrids (21 specimens), 16 parameters were evaluated (length/width of the scutum and capitulum, length of the hypostome, palp, tarsus I, coxa I, sternal setae, and various scutal and alloscutal setae) and discrimination analysis was performed allowing differentiation o

The efficiency of 9 drugs based on cipermethrin, deltamethrin, permethrin, lambdacigalothrin, ciphenothrin, phenothrin against hungry I. persulcatus nymphs was studied in the laboratory setting. The values LD50 and LD99 (in g of an active ingredient per m2) were found when the nymphs got into contacts with the treated filter paper for 10 sec and 1 min. The paper discusses whether the pyrethroids as part of attractant-acaricidal granules can be used to suppress the size of ticks in the tick-borne encephalitis foci.

Here, we studied Askola specimens sampled from streams in the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest ecoregions of Brazil. We associate nymphs and adults of A. mucuge using molecular tools (COI sequences). The nymph of this species can be differentiated from the two other known nymphs of the genus by the internal denticle medially located at the external incisor of the left mandible and by abdominal terga without marks. In addition, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery revealed the possibility of cryptic species under the name of Askola froehlichi, suggesting three independent lineages. Our results reduce th

A 15-year-old patient living in Bashkortostan was admitted as having a diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the left hepatic lobe for surgical treatment. He had the following concomitant diseases: neurodermatitis, bronchial asthma, and acute respiratory disease. After surgery (laparoscopic echinococcectomy), a portion was taken from the parent vesicle wall for a histological study. The parasite was detected on the inner membrane surface. It is suggested that this is a Pentastoma sp. (Arthropoda, Maxillopoda, Pentastomida, and Cephalobaenida). Thus, the observed patient has a combined hepatic invasion

The new species Gilliesia ratchaburiensis sp. nov. is described based on male and female imagos (some of them reared from nymphal stages), nymphs and eggs collected in western Thailand. The nymph of Gilliesia, which is described for the first time, has bifid gills, a dense patch of setae on the ventral side of the glossae, no posterolateral spines on abdominal segment VIII, maxillary palpi 3-segmented and very reduced maxillary canines. Compared to congeners, the male imagos of the new species have penis lobes more straight and with the apical portion bent laterally but not ventrally, and fema

Thermal cues are fundamental for host-seeking in kissing bugs, primary vectors of American trypanosomiasis. Host surface temperature may reflect underlying vascular richness, potentially guiding feeding site selection. In this study, we investigated whether Rhodnius prolixus nymphs preferentially select specific regions of a mammalian host and whether local skin temperature influences this choice. Nymphs from first to fifth instars were allowed to feed on anesthetized mice, and insect densities were recorded across distinct body regions (head, lateral abdomen, paws and tail). Mouse body temper
