Management of obesity.

We live in an overweight society. Although food consumption has not increased dramatically over the last two decades, physical activity has markedly diminished. However, recent studies suggest that weights up to 20% above ideal body weight do not carry a significant risk of increased mortality in the absence of other chronic diseases. A team approach helps maintain patient motivation, the key to an effective weight-loss program. An efficient weight-loss and weight-maintenance program in the moderately obese patient includes modification of eating patterns, an individualized balanced fuel-sourc

Management of Obesity.

This review examines weight loss and accompanying improvements in obesity-related comorbidities produced by intensive lifestyle intervention, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery. Obese individuals lose approximately 6 to 8 kg (approximately 6% to 8% of initial weight) with 6 months of participation in a high-intensity lifestyle intervention (≥ 14 treatment visits) consisting of diet, physical activity, and behavior therapy. Such losses reduce progression to type 2 diabetes in at-risk people and decrease blood pressure and triglyceride levels. All diets, regardless of macronutrient compositi

The management of obesity.

Every obese person presents a different management problem, although the following general principles can be applied: (1) It may be easier to prevent obesity than to treat it. (2) Lifelong modification of eating habit is the corner stone of effective therapy. (3) Group therapy combined with a behavioural modification programme provides a method of assisting many subjects. (4) Drug therapy is best justified if there is a short-term need to produce weight loss. (5) Radical therapy should be restricted to the morbidly obese and is best supervised by units with special expertise.

Management of Childhood Obesity.

Obesity is characterized by an excess accumulation of adipose tissue, independent of its distribution or function, and is associated with organ dysfunction and a broad range of metabolic and cardiac complications. Nutritional, environmental, behavioral, genetic, psychological, and metabolic factors contribute to obesity. It is associated with many secondary complications, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, reduced quality of life, and psychological illnesses. For practical purposes, childhood obesity can be classif

Medical management of obesity.

Obesity is a global epidemic that has worsened over the past few decades. It is strongly associated with multiple health conditions, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, obstructive sleep apnoea, certain malignancies and has an increased mortality risk. The annual cost of obesity to the NHS is around £6 billion, projected to increase to just under £10 billion by 2050. In 2020-2021, obesity was cited as a factor in over 1 million hospital admissions. An early and pragmatic approach to the management of obesity would reduce obesity-associated multiple health conditions an

Medical management of obesity.

The prevalence of obesity and obesity-related disorders, such as insulin resistance and hyperinsulinaemia, which form the basis for the Metabolic Syndrome, is still increasing and reaching epidemic proportions. Excess weight, particularly abdominal obesity, elevates multiple cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, appropriate management of obesity and prevention of obesity-related diseases with high mortality and morbidity is of great importance for public health. Obesity management goals should en

10: Management of obesity.

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in Australia, with 67.5% of men, 52.1% of women and 19%-23% of children and adolescents being overweight or obese. Genetically predisposed individuals are especially vulnerable to developing obesity in the highly obesogenic environment of 21st century Australia. Obesity causes or contributes to many comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, sleep apnoea, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, orthopaedic problems and polycystic ovary syndrome. Management in the individual requires their complete co-operation and should be tailored t

Pharmacological management of obesity.

Obesity is a major chronic health problem in adults. It is a complex, multifactorial disorder characterised by excess accumulation of adipose tissue. It is associated with a number of complications including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia and cancer. A weight loss in the order of 5-10% is associated with clinically meaningful reductions with respect to all comorbidities. Diet and exercise has been the cornerstone of weight management therapy, but this approach has limitations, especially for weight maintenance. Previous drugs used in obesity had serious si

Medical management of obesity.

Obesity is one of the most common medical problems in the United States and a risk factor for illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, degenerative arthritis and myocardial infarction. It is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality and generates great social and financial costs. Obesity is defined as a body mass index greater than 30. Many patients accomplish weight loss with diet, exercise and lifestyle modification. Others require more aggressive therapy. Weight loss medications may be appropriate for use in selected patients who meet the definition of obesity or who are overweight wi

Pharmacologic management of obesity.

Obesity is a major health problem in the United States. It is not only a problem in itself, but it is a predisposing factor for many chronic illnesses. Pharmaceutical houses have devoted much research in the development of drugs to combat the problem. While diet and exercise continue to be the first line of defense, many diet drugs are available on the market to help an individual lose weight. This article discusses some of the theories that appear to explain the development of the overweight condition and provides basic information on the drugs currently in use.

Pharmacologic management of obesity.

Recent discoveries of processes that govern regulation of body weight and energy expenditure have led to development of new anti-obesity pharmacological agents. This article will inform health professionals of new anti-obesity medications that target neuronal systems within the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral humoral proteins that send signals to the CNS. An emerging theme of new therapies is to use combination medications that are directed toward several targets or leverage existing gastrointestinal satiety hormonal signals. By using combination therapies, it is anticipated that g

Medical management of obesity.

Obesity has become a major health problem in many countries because of its high prevalence and causal relationship with serious medical complications. Many of the medical complications associated with obesity improve with intentional weight in a dose-dependent fashion, and even a modest weight loss of 50% of initial weight has beneficial effects. This article reviews the nonsurgical approaches for achieving weight loss in obese persons.

Obesity management--new perspectives.

Obesity represents a growing threat for the health of population worldwide. The decline of physical activity and the passive overconsumption of energy-dense, high-fat diets are important factors that explain the increased prevalence of obesity. Despite many efforts, the prevention and the treatment of obesity are often a failure. Since obesity development is due to a chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure, the most important advice for the prevention and the treatment of this nutritional disorder remains the reduction of high-fat foods and the stimulation of fat oxidati

Challenges in obesity management.

CONTEXT: Obesity is increasing at an alarming rate. During the past decade, the overall prevalence of obesity in the United States increased over 30%, with more than one third of the adult population meeting the definition of being overweight. OBJECTIVE: We review current and emerging therapies, present outcome data from a large clinical practice, and discuss challenges for physicians and researchers involved in obesity treatment. SUMMARY: Because obesity is a risk factor for numerous medical disorders and excess mortality, it is imperative that effective treatments be developed. While the c

Update on obesity, the obesity paradox, and obesity management in heart failure.

Obesity is a major public health challenge worldwide. It is costly, predisposes to many cardiovascular (CV) diseases (CVD), is increasing at an alarming rate, and disproportionately affects people of low-socioeconomic status. It has a myriad of deleterious effects on the body, particularly on the CV system. Obesity is a major risk factor for heart failure (HF) and highly prevalent in this population, particularly in those with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), to the extent that an obesity HFpEF phenotype has been proposed in the literature. However, once HF is developed, an obesity
