The perceived value of our possessions extends well beyond their monetary worth or utility. Many possessions produce abiding attachments and contain deep conceptual meanings, which strongly influence our drive to acquire, retain, or relinquish them. In both the endowment effect and hoarding disorder (HD) research had focused on the degree that a fear of loss produces overvaluation by owners. There is evidence for this at both the behavioral and neural level, for example with self-reported negative emotions and activation in the insula and anterior cingulate cortex when one struggles to relinqu

Extreme object attachment in adults can form as a way to compensate for a lack of interpersonal attachment or as a symptom of hoarding disorder; however, normative levels of object attachment also exist across the lifespan. Although the importance of secure interpersonal attachment as a protective factor for older adults has been well established, research into object attachment in older adults is still a nascent field. As individuals age, they inevitably experience a series of cognitive, emotional, and physical changes that may influence their attachment to objects. Life events may impact the

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is a core feature of hoarding disorder (HD), but it also occurs in people without HD. It is therefore critical to clarify differences between normal and abnormal object attachment. Although previous studies show that HD is associated with high emotional reactivity, no study to date has examined the nature and intensity of discrete emotions in people with and without HD in relation to object attachment.
METHOD: Individuals with HD (n = 93) and matched controls (n = 93) were recruited via MTurk. They identified and described a possession of low monetary va

Cross-cultural studies suggest that children who sleep in the same room as their parents and who are breast-fed are less likely to use an attachment object. The present study examined childrearing practices that emphasize physical proximity of parent and child and use of an attachment object and thumbsucking at bedtime with 126 healthy U.S. infants. Four child-rearing practices were focused on: presence or absence of a caregiver when the child actually fell asleep; mode of feeding; location of the child's bed or sleeping place; whether or not the child slept with the parents during the night.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is the emotional bond or connection that we have with possessions. Although thought to be ubiquitous, when excessive, object attachment is presumed to contribute to compulsive buying and hoarding problems. Unfortunately, our understanding of this relationship has been limited by the constraints of existing object attachment measures. In this paper, we developed and validated a new self-report questionnaire, called the Object Attachment Security Measure (OASM).
METHODS: We developed an item pool based on previous measures and consultation with 24 experts

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals who meet criteria for compulsive buying-shopping disorder (i.e., acquiring problems only) or hoarding disorder (i.e., acquiring and discarding problems) may acquire possessions to compensate for unmet belonging needs, but may do so in different ways. Those with compulsive buying-shopping disorder may acquire objects that they believe will relieve the distress associated with unmet belonging needs (e.g., objects that distract or comfort), whereas those with hoarding disorder may acquire objects that they believe achieve belonging needs (e.g., objects that have i

Motives for acquiring and saving objects are closely linked to object attachment, but the nature of these associations has not been established. A better understanding of the motives for acquiring and saving possessions and how they relate to object attachment may reveal insights into the underpinnings of hoarding disorder. In turn, these insights can aid in identifying optimal targets for interventions for hoarding problems. In this paper, we propose a simple theoretical model of the dynamic associations among motives to acquire objects, object attachment, and motives to save objects, grounde

This case describes an emergency situation with a 10-month-old infant who presented with a sizable, smooth-surfaced, dome-shaped oral lesion. Upon examination, the pediatric dentist discovered a piece of a toy, embedded in the alveolar ridge. The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness about intraoral foreign body embedment in infants, highlighting the potential risks associated with popular toys that can break, adhere to the alveolar ridge and pose choking hazards. Pediatric dentists should advise parents to prevent infants from chewing on toys due to safety concerns.

Excessive attachment towards possessions can be maladaptive because it can lead individuals to excessively acquire and save objects. Little is known about how attachment to objects develops and changes over time; however, interpersonal factors have been theorized to play a role. The current study examined whether interpersonal factors, specifically interpersonal attachment style and empathy, moderate changes in object attachment over time. A total of 145 participants with excessive acquiring and discarding difficulties rated their level of attachment to a novel object just after receiving it,

Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterised by compulsive acquisition and extreme difficulty discarding possessions, resulting in clutter that substantially impacts upon functioning. Heightened object attachment is a central feature of HD according to prominent theoretical models. We review current research on the nature and function of object attachment in HD. In particular, we describe growing evidence that object attachment in HD is a compensatory response to unmet relatedness needs, and recent research underscoring the insecure nature of object attachment in hoarding. Critical gaps include the

We performed four experiments to investigate whether people can perceive the length of a target object (a "fish") that is attached to a freely wielded object (the "fishing pole") by a length of string, and if so, whether this ability is grounded in the sensitivity of the touch system to invariant mechanical parameters that describe the forces and torques required to move the target object. In particular, we investigated sensitivity to mass, static moment, and rotational inertia-the forces required to keep an object from falling due to gravity, the torque required to keep an object from rotatin

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by tumultuous, unstable personal relationships, difficulty being alone, and an inability to self-soothe. This may explain why patients with BPD tend to develop strong attachments to transitional objects such as stuffed animals. Research in hospital settings has linked the use of transitional objects to the presence of BPD. Using a nonclinical community sample (N = 80) we explored the link between attachments to transitional objects and various aspects of personality pathology, as well as to childhood trauma, and parental rearing styles. Precise object detection is critical for preventing damage to vehicle attachments during automatic car washing. However, the existing methods often suffer from low accuracy and false detections due to the diverse shapes and visual ambiguity of these attachments. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework integrating a YOLOv11-based detector with a graph neural network. Specifically, we introduce a spatial graph module to refine object localization by capturing invariant spatial constraints within the car wash environment. Furthermore, we incorporate a class graph module to model

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The appetitive aspects of hoarding disorder, such as the compulsive acquisition and saving of objects, are akin to other behavioral addictions. Underpinning these appetitive features is the strong emotional and sentimental attachments that hoarding sufferers have for their possessions. Different facets of object attachment have been identified including anthropomorphism, insecure object attachment, possessions as an extension of identity, possessions as a repository of autobiographical memories, and possessions as a source of comfort and safety. The aim of this study was t

Excessive or maladaptive object attachment is the defining feature of Hoarding Disorder (HD) and the acquisition process within Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder (CBSD). In recent years, the relationship of object attachment within HD and CBSD to individual's self-concept has become the focus of direct research. On the basis of this literature, it seems that an underdeveloped, ambivalent, or discrepant self-concept could be a vulnerability for dysfunctional object attachment behavior. Further, the importance of objects in buttressing and extending self-concept, both individually and in relat

Past research shows strong links between object attachment and hoarding but has relied on poorly validated measures of object attachment. The Object Attachment Security Measure (OASM; David & Norberg, 2022b) was developed to address this limitation. This study evaluates the construct validity and measurement invariance of the OASM across age groups, genders, and hoarding severity. Participants were 777 individuals recruited via Prolific. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the correlated two-factor structure with two subscales: secure object attachment (SOA) and insecure object attachment (

This commentary highlights the importance of articulating Ashley Thomas's perspective on representations of social relationships with a reflection on the rules that constitute or sustain them. This approach may also help bridge the gap between developmental studies on intuitive sociology and both theoretical and empirical research in scholarly sociology.

We advocate for decolonizing developmental theory beyond sample expansion. Using attachment theory as an example, we demonstrate how current theories misrepresent even Western populations, where allo-parental care is a necessity. We argue that focusing on adaptive challenges, not behavior, will support open-ended theories with universal relevance. This requires reflexivity, transparency, and centering indigenous methods prior to proposing any universal developmental mechanisms.

PURPOSE: Attachment insecurity has been theorised to be associated with the development and maintenance of negative symptoms. Previous reviews examining the relationship between attachment insecurity and negative symptoms of psychosis have produced conflicting findings. Using meta-analytic techniques, the current study sought to systematically appraise the relationship between attachment insecurity dimensions, total negative symptoms and domains of negative symptoms.
METHODS: A systematic review of literature published on electronic databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO) up to Oct
