Canine tuberculosis: A review of 18 new and 565 previously reported confirmed cases.

Cases of canine tuberculosis, a zoonotic infection of significant public health significance, are typically only sporadically reported in the literature. For this observational study, case details were collated both retrospectively and prospectively for dogs infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis-complex (MTBC) organisms. A total of 18 previously unreported cases as well as 565 historically reported confirmed cases were reviewed. A variety of diagnostic techniques were used to make a confirmed diagnosis of tuberculosis (culture, interferon-gamma release assay [IGRA], and PCR). The reference

Bovine omphalocele: errors in embryonic development, veterinarian importance, and the way forward.

Omphalocele is an embryonic developmental error presented as a neonatal visceral umbilical herniation. Epidemiological and embryological studies are reviewed that revise our understanding of midgut development and defects in cattle. Google Scholar and PubMed were searched for omphalocele, exomphalos, calves, calf, cattle, epidemiology, genetics, disease presentation, and omphalocele treatments of bovine neonates. Omphalocele contains small intestine and sometimes liver and/or pyloric abomasum. This condition may arise from inadequately expanded abdominal cavity, herniated midgut entrapment, or

Pesticides and veterinary pharmaceuticals in neotropical avian carnivores: A scoping review.

Organic contaminants have long been known to have negative consequences for wildlife health. For avian carnivores, particular concern surrounds the use of compounds such as pesticides and pharmaceutical drugs, derived from global agricultural and veterinary practices. Previous cases of avian poisoning in North America, Europe and Asia have received great attention, owing to significant declines in avian populations and wider consequences. By contrast, the Neotropics, comprised of Latin America and the Caribbean, has received relatively little attention, despite an extensive agricultural sector

Animal models of immune-mediated demyelinating polyneuropathies.

Immune-mediated demyelinating polyneuropathies (IMDPs) are rare disorders in which dysregulated adaptive immune responses cause peripheral nerve demyelinating inflammation and axonal injury in susceptible individuals. Despite significant advances in understanding IMDP pathogenesis guided by patient data and representative mammalian models, specific therapies are lacking. Significant knowledge gaps in IMDP pathogenesis still exist, e.g. precise antigen(s) and mechanisms that initially trigger immune system activation and identification of large population disease susceptibility factors. The ini

Retrospective Evaluation of End-Diastolic Forward Flow and Restrictive Physiology in One Hundred and Sixty-Four Dogs with Pulmonary Stenosis.

The study of the function of the right ventricle (RV) is a topic of great interest in the scientific community, and some studies have evaluated parameters of the right ventricular systolic function and have correlated them to various RV pathologies and possible clinical findings. Less information was obtained on the right ventricular diastolic function. In veterinary medicine, the characteristics of the restrictive RV and the presence of end-diastolic forward flow (EDFF) in patients with pulmonary stenosis have not yet been described. This type of flow is an antegrade flow that is observed wit

The role, relevance and management of immune exhaustion in bovine infectious diseases.

Immune exhaustion is a state of immune cell dysfunction that occurs most commonly following chronic exposure to an antigen which persists after the immune response fails to remove it. Exhaustion has been studied most thoroughly with several cancers, but has also been observed in several chronic infectious diseases. The topic has mainly been studied with CD8+ T cells, but it can also occur with CD4+ T cells and other immune cell types too. Exhaustion is characterized by a hierarchical loss of effector cell functions, up-regulation of immuno-inhibitory receptors, disruption of metabolic activiti
