High-frequency neuromodulation improves obsessive-compulsive behavior.

Nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from obsessive-compulsive behaviors1,2, yet our mechanistic understanding of these behaviors is incomplete, and effective therapeutics are unavailable. An emerging perspective characterizes obsessive-compulsive behaviors as maladaptive habit learning3,4, which may be associated with abnormal beta-gamma neurophysiology of the orbitofrontal-striatal circuitry during reward processing5,6. We target the orbitofrontal cortex with alternating current, personalized to the intrinsic beta-gamma frequency of the reward network, and show rapid, reversible, frequ

Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior Isn't Necessarily a Bad Thing.

It is difficult to believe that in about 1960 practically nothing was known about the thymus and some of its products, T cells bearing αβ receptors for antigen. Thus I was lucky to join the field of T cell biology almost at its beginning, when knowledge about the cells was just getting off the ground and there was so much to discover. This article describes findings about these cells made by others and myself that led us all from ignorance, via complete confusion, to our current state of knowledge. I believe I was fortunate to practice science in very supportive institutions and with very coll

Behavioral inhibition and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Behavioral inhibition is frequently cited as a vulnerability factor for development of anxiety. However, few studies have examined the unique relationship between behavioral inhibition and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Therefore, the current study addressed the relationship between behavioral inhibition and OCD in a number of ways. In a large unselected student sample, frequency of current OC symptoms was significantly correlated with retrospective self-reports of total levels of childhood behavioral inhibition. In addition, frequency of current OC symptoms was also significantly correl

Obsessive-compulsive disorder with hoarding behavior: unravelling key differences.

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding disorder remains underexplored and poorly understood despite its significant impact on individuals and communities. While historically linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), emerging evidence suggests they may be distinct conditions. This study aims to investigate these differences. METHODS: Adults aged 18-88 years old (M = 39.86, SD = 14.86) were part of the Genomic Psychiatry Cohort study, including 1247 individuals with OCD without presumed hoarding disorder (OCD-pHD) and 663 individuals with OCD and presumed hoarding disorder (OCD+pHD). Sociodemographic data we

Cognitive behavior therapy for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is considered a first-line intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) across the lifespan. Efficacy studies of CBT with exposure and response prevention suggest robust symptom reduction, often with sustained remission. Acceptability of CBT is high, and the treatment is devoid of adverse side effects. The primary mechanism of CBT is based on operant principles, specifically extinction learning. The efficacy of extinction-based treatments such as CBT is being shown for other obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. This article reviews the theoretic bas

Distinguishing Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior From Stereotypy: A Preliminary Investigation.

The current project was an initial attempt to develop assessment procedures for distinguishing between obsessive-compulsive (OC) and stereotypic behavior and evaluate the impact of different treatments for these behaviors. Two individuals with autism, one with repetitive behavior characteristic of OC behavior and one with repetitive behavior not characteristic of OC behavior, participated in the study. In Experiment 1, given that individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) report experiencing unpleasant urges that are relieved when they perform compulsive actions, an attempt was made

Telephone-administered cognitive behavior therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Exposure with response prevention and cognitive behavior therapy are widely recognized as effective treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Unfortunately, many people with obsessive-compulsive disorder--particularly those living in rural areas--do not have access to therapists providing these treatments. Accordingly, we investigated the efficacy of telephone-administered cognitive behavior therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder. Two open trials are reported, for a total of 33 people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (without major depression). The first trial consisted of 12 weeks on

[Obsessive behavior and thoughts in patients with myasthenia gravis].

230 patients with myasthenia gravis were investigated by a german questionnaire, the HAMBURGER-ZWANGS-INVENTAR, in order to quantify their obsessive and compulsive behaviour. Compared to normals, myasthenic patients show higher scores on the compulsion-subscales of the inventory. The most significant differences appeared on the orderliness-subscale. On the other hand ratings of obsessive behaviour are significantly lower than in the normal population. Especially (auto)aggressive ruminations do hardly occur in myasthenia, which is a remarkable fact in this autoaggressive immunological disease.

Clozapine generates obsessive compulsive disorder-like behavior in mice.

Clozapine is thought to induce obsessive compulsive symptoms (OCS) in schizophrenic patients. However, because OCS are often comorbid with schizophrenia regardless of clozapine treatment, it remains unclear whether clozapine can generate OCS de novo. Thus, it has been difficult to establish a causal link between clozapine and OCS in human studies. To address this question, we asked whether chronic treatment with clozapine can induce obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)-like behavior in mice. We injected mice with long-term continuous release pellets embedded with clozapine four times at 60-day

Obsessive-compulsive and perseverative behaviors in Huntington's disease.

Obsessive-compulsive and perseverative behaviors (OCBs/PBs) are characteristic features of Huntington's Disease (HD). Although a few recent research have attempted to discriminate between OCBs and PBs, most of the available evidence on OCBs does not consistently make this distinction. In this article, we aimed to explore the current inconsistencies in assessing and reporting OCBs/PBs and map the body of existing evidence. Up to half of the patients with motor manifest HD can experience OCBs. Separate reporting of PBs in HD patients has been uncommon among the studies and was frequently reporte

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of debilitating obsessions and compulsions. Cognitive and behavioral models of OCD provide a strong theoretic and empirical foundation for informing effective psychotherapeutic treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for OCD, which includes a deliberate emphasis on exposure and response/ritual prevention, has consistently demonstrated robust efficacy for the treatment of pediatric and adult OCD and is the front-line psychotherapeutic treatment for OCD. Two case vignettes describing CBT for OCD in practice as well as rec

Obsessive-Compulsive and Perseverative Behaviors in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms are highly prevalent in Huntington's disease (HD). However, little is known of the prevalence and course of obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCBs) and perseverative behaviors (PBs) during the progression of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This review provides a summary of the literature on OCBs and PBs in HD gene expansion carriers (HDGECs). METHODS: Pubmed database was searched for articles on OCBs and PBs in HD up to 2017. We used search terms, all synonyms for HD, and various terms for OCBs and PBs. RESULTS: We found 5 case series and 11 original articles tha

Frontal abnormalities in a patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder: the role of structural lesions in obsessive-compulsive behavior.

A man with onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) at age 62 had a large right posterior frontal infarct and occlusion of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery. We review additional cases from the literature with obsessive or compulsive behaviors and structural lesions. OCD may have a structural correlate, and this should be searched for in instances where onset occurs after age 60, is atypical, or is associated with other neurologic signs or symptoms. Rational therapy for OCD will depend on a detailed understanding of the neuronal circuitry and physiologic mechanisms underlying such be

Investigating behavior inhibition in obsessive-compulsive disorder: Evidence from eye movements.

We investigated the role of inhibition failure in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) through an eye tracking experiment. Twenty-five subjects with OCD were recruited, as well as 25 with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and 25 healthy controls. A 3 (group: OCD group, GAD group and control group) × 2 (target eccentricity: far and near) × 2 (saccade task: prosaccade and antisaccade) mixed design was used, with all participants completing two sets of tasks involving both prosaccade (eye movement towards a target) and antisaccade (eye movement away from a target). The main outcome was the eye mo

The predictors of health care seeking behavior in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

A majority of individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) do not seek health care. To better understand why not, health care-seekers (HCS) with OCD (n = 25) were compared with non-health care-seekers (NHCS) with OCD (n = 23) regarding their sociodemographic variables, symptom severity, types of obsessions and compulsions, insight degree, comorbid diagnosis, and quality-of-life (QOL) level. There was no significant difference for sociodemographic characteristics between the groups. NHCS scored significantly lower on a measure of illness severity than HCS. The NHCS group had significant

Contextual and behavioral influences on uncertainty in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral adaptation generally follows the contextual changes arising from the consequences (rewards and punishments) of an action. According to the reciprocal determinism model, there is a mutual influence between external context, cognitive processes and behavior. The maladaptive behaviors observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been hypothesized to result from the disruption of the interactions between these three entities. For this, we assessed the influence of error signals and checking behavior on prefrontal cortical functions during decision-making in 14 OCD
