Relationship between obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This study investigated the presence of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) in a group of 277 patients (88 with obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD], 58 with major depressive disorder [MDD], and 131 with panic disorder [Panic]) to test the specificity of the relationship between OCPD and OCD. OCPD is statistically significantly more frequent in patients with OCD than in those with Panic and MDD. The distribution of single criteria of OCPD in the three groups does not differ significantly. Discriminant analysis selects a list of items that provide a correct classification rate of 66

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Within the past decade the field of psychiatry has rediscovered the neuropsychiatric syndrome of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although excellently described over 150 years ago, for many years OCD was thought to be rare, untreatable, and to arise from hidden psychodynamic conflicts. All of these earlier ideas now appear to be wrong. Occurring in approximately 2% of adults, OCD consists of recurrent intrusive thoughts (obsessions) or senseless repetitive actions (compulsions). Although the aetiology of OCD remains unclear, recent neuro-imaging studies implicate the basal ganglia and fron

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly prevalent and chronic condition that is associated with substantial global disability. OCD is the key example of the 'obsessive-compulsive and related disorders', a group of conditions which are now classified together in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Revision, and which are often underdiagnosed and undertreated. In addition, OCD is an important example of a neuropsychiatric disorder in which rigorous research on phenomenology, psychobiology, pharma

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews current knowledge regarding diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment trends in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a severe, underrecognized, and chronic condition frequently encountered in neurologic practice. RECENT FINDINGS: With a lifetime prevalence estimated at 2.5%, OCD is a common condition that can also present comorbidly with neurologic disease. The core symptoms of OCD are obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive repetitive thoughts, urges, images, or impulses that trigger anxiety and that the individual is not able to suppress.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common heterogeneous psychiatric disorder manifesting with obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are intrusive, recurrent, and persistent unwanted thoughts. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to the obsessions. The heterogeneity of OCD includes themes of obsessions, types of rituals, presence or absence of tics, etiology, genetics, and response to pharmacotherapy. Complications of OCD include interpersonal difficulties, unemployment, substance abuse, criminal justice issues, and ph

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The prevalence of OCD in a dermatologic practice may be much higher than in the general population. OCDs can be debilitating in one's interpersonal, social, and occupational functioning. The obsessions and compulsions typically begin fairly early in life and may consume prolonged lengths of the patient's time to complete daily rituals of washing, checking, touching, arranging, hoarding, or ruminating. Evidence is mounting for support of a neurobiologic basis in the etiology of OCD. In terms of treatment, the psychopharmacologic agents (clomipramine, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, sertraline, paroxet

Obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder and the criminal law.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness that has penetrated public consciousness. However, the extent to which OCD and obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) can constitute debilitating conditions that adversely affect most aspects of a person's functioning and quality of life are not so well known, including as to how they can impair the capacity to give reasoned consideration to conduct options and the consequences of choices. Little scholarship exists about the legal repercussions of OCD and OCPD and, in particular, their potential relevance for both assessments of

Childhood Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently affects children and adolescents, with most cases beginning during this time. Symptoms of OCD in youth may present as exaggerated developmental concerns and excessive ritualistic behavior beyond what is part of normal development, yet low levels of insight may prevent recognition. Affected youth commonly have comorbid neurodevelopmental diagnoses, especially males. Early detection and intervention are critical to recovery and remission, as well as family involvement in treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy and serotonin reuptake inhibitors are f

Juvenile obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the characteristics of a series of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and evaluate the outcome of treatment. METHOD: Type of symptoms, severity before and after treatment and factors associated with outcome were examined in a large group (n = 82) of consecutive OCD cases referred for treatment. RESULTS: Most children (95%) had both obsessions and compulsions. Symptoms had been present for 2 years on average. Seventy-one per cent (n = 57) of all eligible patients completed a combined behavioural and pharmacological protocol. Among these, t

Childhood obsessive compulsive disorder.

Childhood obsessive compulsive disorder has recently been recognized as being more common than previously believed, supporting epidemiologic studies in adults that found rates far higher than clinical studies have suggested. Clinically, presentation is generally similar to that for adult patients, but compulsions may occur in the absence of obsessions although both obsessions and compulsions are common. Symptoms typically change over time, but almost all subjects at some time experienced excess washing as one of their symptoms. There is an increased rate of obsessive compulsive disorder and of

Obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder.

A wide range of psychiatric and medical disorders have been hypothesized to be related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and thus, together, to form a family of disorders known as obsessive compulsive (or OCD) spectrum disorder. The grouping of these conditions is based on their phenomenological similarities with OCD (i.e., obsessive thinking and/or compulsive behaviors), as well as their having courses of illness, comorbidity and family history patterns, biological abnormalities, and treatment responses similar to OCD. Proposed OCD spectrum disorders have included body dysmorphic disorde

Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing awareness of the heterogeneity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and of the multiple systems involved in its pathogenesis. Identification of obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs) may have important implications in the management and prognosis of OCD, but there is a paucity of research in the domain of identification of OCSD in probands with OCD. There are few studies that have examined OCSD in the first-degree relatives (FDR) of OCD patients, some of these were not controlled, and these studies have no final agreements over outcomes, and therefore,

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Co-Occurring Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder: A Practice Focused Review.

This review article addresses the frequently noted comorbidity between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). We begin by reviewing the recent empirical literature on the co-occurrence of these two conditions and the functional consequences of comorbid OCPD on OCD. We describe theoretical conceptualizations of the links between these disorders, including shared mechanisms that may drive the association between these two distinct conditions. We then provide an overview of diagnostic measures for OCPD and differential diagnosis. We also review d

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder co-occurring with obsessive-compulsive disorder: Conceptual and clinical implications.

OBJECTIVES: There are ongoing uncertainties in the relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). This study aimed to test the proposition that OCPD may be a marker of severity of OCD by comparing groups of OCD individuals with and without OCPD on a number of variables. METHOD: A total of 148 adults with a principal diagnosis of OCD were administered the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, Sheehan Disability Scale, Vancouver Obsessional Compulsive Inventory and Symptom Checklist 9

Clinical characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder comorbid with obsessive -compulsive personality disorder: subtype implications.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent obsessions and compulsions that lead to significant distress and functional impairment. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) frequently co-occurs in individuals with OCD and has been identified in several studies as the most prevalent personality disorder within this population. However, the clinical relevance of this comorbidity remains uncertain, particularly in terms of whether it reflects a distinct OCD subtype characterized by specific onset patterns and symptom dimensions. Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: There has been debate about whether obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) should be classified as one of the anxiety disorders, or should rather be categorized with obsessive-compulsive spectrum conditions. SAMPLING AND METHODS: The question of where OCD should be located in the diagnostic system was addressed by investigating the relationship of OCD, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs), and anxiety disorders. We administered a structured diagnostic interview (the SCID-OCSD) for assessing putative OCSDs in patients who presented with a primary diagnosis of OCD, panic dis
