Occlusal "Splints": What Is the Evidence?

Dental occlusal splints (OSs) have been used in patients for the last several decades. There is only limited evidence supporting the utility of OS in treating temporomandibular joint disorders. This study explores the historic background of OS, various types, proposed modes of action, and the pertinent literature. The study also goes into details of what is evidence based in OS therapy. In addition, it also enumerates the indications of OS in general dentistry and specialty practice.

Occlusal Splints and Periodontal/Implant Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Occlusal trauma, defined as an injury to the tooth or implant supporting tissues, is a resultant of parafunctional habits such as bruxism. It has been shown to accelerate periodontal breakdown and also contribute to implant complications, thereby adversely affecting the long-term success of periodontal and implant therapy. This review aims to discuss the effects of bruxism on periodontal and implant treatment. In addition, the effectiveness of occlusal splints to manage bruxism will be examined. METHODS: An electronic literature search using PubMed and Scopus databases and a manua

Occlusal splints-types and effectiveness in temporomandibular disorder management.

BACKGROUND: Occlusal splints are routinely used in dental offices to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the masticatory system. There are different occlusal splints, each of which can address various conditions. They may treat individuals with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and bruxism or be used for occlusal stabilization and dentition wear reduction. METHODS: The literature in the National Library of Medicine's Medline Database was reviewed using the Mesh terms 'occlusal splints' AND 'Temporomandibular Disorders. CONCLUSION: Occlusal splints can treat a wide variety of TMDs. They can

Materials and manufacturing techniques for occlusal splints: A literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To review the materials and fabrications methods of occlusal splints with their advantages and shortcomings and to clarify the indications for each. BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) encompass a range of conditions affecting the masticatory system. Occlusal splints are currently recognised as a viable option for the management of TMDs when they are adopted in conjunction with additional approaches varying from conservative procedures (counselling, biofeedback, physical therapy, pharmacotherapy) to irreversible and less conservative ones (occlusal adjustments, ort

Temporomandibular joint vibration before and after exercises and occlusal splints.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds are frequent in patients. The aim of this study was to analyze patients with clicking at the end of opening and at the beginning of closing their mouths treated by muscular exercises through chewing and by occlusal splints. Fifteen patients with clinically verified clicking and TMJ and 15 patients without sounds were selected by the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders. They were submitted to electrovibratography at consultation and 60 and 120 days of treatment by occlusal splints and exercises. Patients demonstrated significant redu

Efficiency of mixed and rigid occlusal stabilization splints: Randomized clinical trial.

Occlusal stabilization splints are the most common treatment for controlling the deleterious effects of sleep bruxism. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a low-cost, mixed occlusal splint (MOS) compared to that of a rigid splint. A randomized clinical trial was performed on 43 adults of both sexes with possible sleep bruxism and satisfactory dental conditions. They were divided into rigid occlusal splint (ROS) (n = 23) and MOS (n = 20) groups. Masticatory muscle and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain intensity (visual analog scale), quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), indentations in

[The management of temporomandibular joint disorders. The role of occlusal splints].

Occlusal appliances are often used for the diagnosis and treatment of pain and dysfunction related to the mastication system, despite the lack of a precise diagnosis. We reviewed the indications for occlusal appliances, classing them by accepted procedures for precise diagnosis. The type of appliance to use for each pathological situation is described. Conditions other than those described here do not, in the author's opinion, constitute warranted indications for occlusal appliances.

Anatomy of an occlusal splint.

Occlusal splints, also known as bite guards, oral orthotics, and oral appliances, are utilized frequently in dental practices. They are commonly used to relax jaw muscles, prevent temporomandibular jaw trauma, protect dentition, and control headaches. How well occlusal splints work is another matter. Numerous studies, when taken as a whole, suggest only a modest indication that they are useful. This review applies principles of neurophysiology to analyze the usefulness of several types of occlusal splint in relation to their design and function. A unique occlusal splint with a design based on

The cerebral representation of temporomandibular joint occlusion and its alternation by occlusal splints.

Occlusal splints are a common and effective therapy for temporomandibular joint disorder. Latest hypotheses on the impact of occlusal splints suggest an altered cerebral control on the occlusion movements after using a splint. However, the impact of using a splint during chewing on its cerebral representation is quite unknown. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate brain activities during occlusal function in centric occlusion on natural teeth or on occlusal splints in fifteen healthy subjects. Comparisons between conditions revealed an increased activation for the
